Top 5 possible successors to Teddy Kennedy

The burning question in Massachusetts today is, “Who will fill Teddy Kennedy’s seat in the U.S. Senate? What the hell. If the rest of the media can speculate on possible successors to Teddy Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate, we might as well pitch in our two cents.

The burning question in Massachusetts today is, “Who will fill Teddy Kennedy’s seat in the U.S. Senate now that Joseph P. Kennedy II has opted out of the coronation that could have (some would say ‘should have’) been his?”

What the hell. If the rest of the media can speculate on possible successors to Teddy Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate, we might as well pitch in our two cents.

Our choices make just as much sense as some others we’ve read (such as New York resident Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, or alcoholic Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, neither of whom are eligible because they don’t live in Massachusetts, for god’s sake).

Listen up, old media. We can speculate just as wildly as you can. Here are our five top choices.

Candidate #1 – Foster Brooks. Sure, he’s been dead for 8 years, but it clear that he follows in the Kennedy tradition and the transition would be seamless.

Candidate #2. Michael Phelps. Who better than a 14-time Olympic gold medal winner to assume Kennedy’s nickname “The Swimmer”?

Lockerbie liars: Brits say Obama and Clinton are lying sacks of…uh…let’s just leave it at liars

To sum it up, the Brits said of Obama and Clinton, “Hey, you stinkin’ liars, don’t complain that you didn’t know we were going to release the Lockerbie bomber. You guys were consulted every step of the way.”

The freed Lockerbie bomber celebrates his release and arrival in Libya with Muammar Gaddafi's son

“Obama and Clinton are stinkin’ lairs.” Brits being Brits, it sounded much more dignified when they said it. But linguists say that’s an American English translation of what they said in English English.

To sum it up, the Brits said, “Hey, you stinkin’ liars, don’t complain that you didn’t know we were going to release the Lockerbie bomber. You guys were consulted every step of the way.”

The UK Daily Mail reports a story that’s getting very little traction from the American media:

President Obama and the US Secretary of State fuelled a fierce American backlash against Britain, claiming Abdelbaset Al Megrahi should have been forced to serve out his jail sentence in Scotland – but a senior Whitehall aide said their reaction was ‘disingenuous’.

British officials claim Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton were kept informed at all stages of discussions concerning Megrahi’s return.

The officials say the Americans spoke out because they were taken aback by the row over Megrahi’s release, not because they did not know it was about to happen.

‘The US was kept fully in touch about everything that was going on with regard to Britain’s discussions with Libya in recent years and about Megrahi,’ said the Whitehall aide.

‘We would never do anything about Lockerbie without discussing it with the US. It is disingenuous of them to act as though Megrahi’s return was out of the blue.

‘They knew about our prisoner transfer agreement with Libya and they knew that the Scots were considering Megrahi’s case.’

And while he was at it, the President said barely knew Van Jones. Met him once. Maybe. In passing.

Most. Transparent. Administration. In. History.

Hilarious: Old media freaks out because new media brought down Van Jones

Broadcast legend Tom Brokaw and dead tree legend Thomas Friedman were nearly apoplectic over the fact that conservative bloggers –- bloggers, mind you — were able to bring down a race-baiting, white-hating, 9/11 Truther communist.

Meet the Press, never known as a hotbed of humor, had hilarity by the truckload on Sunday.

Broadcast legend Tom Brokaw and dead tree legend Thomas Friedman were nearly apoplectic over the fact that conservative bloggers –- bloggers, mind you — were able to bring down a race-baiting, white-hating, 9/11 Truther communist in the White House. They couldn’t contain their disgust.

Some of the better moments:

Friedman: When everyone has a cell phone, everyone’s a photographer. When everyone has access to YouTube, everyone’s a filmmaker. And when everyone’s a blogger, everyone’s a newspaper…

Brokaw: …There’s so much disinformation out there that it’s frightening, frankly.

Friedman: The internet is an open sewer of untreated, unfiltered information … every modem sold in America should actually have come with a warning from the surgeon general that would have said, “Judgment not included.”

Friedman: Too often now people say, and we’ve all heard it, “But I read it on the internet” as if that solves the bar bet. You know, I’m afraid not. (rising in intensity with each repetition) That’s flat out stupid. That’s flat out stupid. Flat out stupid.

Amazing. The same guys who gleefully reported on forged documents about former President Bush completely ignored authentic documents and tapes about Van Jones. Yet they’re so full of themselves that they see fit to lecture America about accurate, ethical reporting.

Of course, that’s just our perspective from down here in the open sewer.

“Why is he saying those terrible things?” is the easy part. Left wing lunatics just don’t like you, Glenn. The tougher question is, “Who the hell is Beau Friedlander?”

Turns out Beau (apparently his real name) is the editor-in-chief of Air America. We were shocked when he wrote an article in the Huffington Post demanding that Fox News fire Glenn Beck.

Don’t get us wrong. We weren’t shocked that he wrote the article. No. We were shocked to find out that Air America is still in operation.

It seems that Beau was hired by Air America to bring their internet-based reporting up to the level of a really bad Jerry Springer episode. Beau, to his credit is trying, first demanding that everyone forego Fox News or be branded un-American. Then, saving his liberal funniest for last, remarking that Van Jones is no more communist than (wait for it)…Glenn Beck.

That got us scrambling (in vain, it seems) for Glenn Beck’s admission of being a communist. Maybe Beau can get a copy of Glenn Beck’s confession from Dan Rather or better yet, maybe Air America can hire Dan and they can work together on stories.

To study Beau at work, and to see the sophisticated methods that Air America utilizes to determine which stories are the most timely and important, watch the embedded video.

13 unintended consequences of Cash-For-Clunkers

The following list probably doesn’t include all the problems Cash for Clunkers will cause – for the fact is that all the unintended consequences may not be known for years – but it’s a pretty good jumping off point.

cadillac-ranch

There’s one law politicians always choose to ignore. Unfortunately, it’s the immutable Law of Unintended Consequences.

It was sitting out there screaming, “Look at me,” when Congress passed the Cash-for-Clunkers program, but no one in Washington, DC paid any attention to its plaintive wails.

So now we all get to live with the unintended consequences of this unmitigated disaster on wheels.

The following list probably doesn’t include all the problems C4C will cause – for the fact is that all the unintended consequences may not be known for years – but it’s a pretty good jumping off point.

1. You think it’s hard to find a good, honest mechanic now? Fewer clunkers on the road means fewer clunkers being repaired. Repair shops that specialize in older cars will really feel the pinch and many will undoubtedly go out of business.

2. Brother can you spare a muffler? Spare parts will cost more. Cash-for-Clunkers regulations dictate that any spare parts must be scavenged from the clunkers within 180 days. After that, all remaining parts – no matter how valuable – must be shredded. The Law of Supply and Demand dictates that scarcity of spare parts will lead directly to more expensive spare parts. Collision repair shops that depend on buying useable doors, hoods, and other body parts from salvage yards will undoubtedly see price increases.

3. Inflate to $4,500. Older cars will cost more, pricing them beyond the means of the poor who need them most. Since the Cash-for-Clunkers law requires that all trade-ins must be destroyed, the program has taken 690,114 (and counting) vehicles off the used-car market. A contracting supply will lead directly to price the smaller pool of remaining used vehicles. Unfortunately, that means the low-income people most likely to buy clunkers will not be able to afford them.

I don’t understand Obama’s MOA, or something. Maybe he is weak, on a slow learning curve, maybe he will surprise us in all those wonderful ways. I don’t know anymore, and the bitterness I am hearing in these comments I can understand.

What good has it done having 60 Senate and 265 House seats? Might as well have had 55 and 240–the higher numbers have made zero difference which is especially troubling to watch when in theory it should be providing us significant reforms with a (formerly) very very popular president with a clear mandate. Obama has squandered that opportunity time and again, to the point where clearly Congress does not fear him and hardly respects him. He is governing like he won by 1 point, not like he won in a landslide. The coat-tails meant nothing in the end if he is totally unwilling to impose his will on a Congress that his party controls by huge margins, it’s absolutely pathetic to watch. And if this continues 2010 will be a disaster.

Fruits having sex in public cause European uproar

Complaints are flooding in about a popular European candy’s new packaging. The fruit figures on Haribo MAOAM sour candies appear to have been caught in flagrante delicto. In other words, it looks like they’re doing it.

Complaints are flooding in about a popular European candy’s new packaging.

The fruit figures on Haribo MAOAM sour candies appear to have been caught in flagrante delicto. In other words, it looks like they’re doing it.

Here’s how London’s Daily Mail reports the sordid story:

Simon Simpkins was buying Haribo MAOAM sour candies for his children when he noticed the “pornographic” illustrations of limes, lemons and cherries romping with each other.

Mr Simpkins of West Yorkshire said: “The lemon and lime are locked in what appears to be a carnal encounter.”

“The lime, whom I assume to be the gentleman in this coupling, has a particularly lurid expression on his face,” he said.

He told said: “I demanded to see the shop manager and, during a heated exchange, my wife became quite distressed and had to sit down in the car park.”

A spokesman for Haribo said the “fun” packaging of the sweets was introduced in Germany in 2002 and added: “This jovial MAOAM man is very popular with fans, both young and old.”

The lemon insisted she doesn’t normally do nude scenes, but said the producers assured her that the label would be handled artfully.

Obama administration gives British distiller $3 billion to move from one American territory to another

Captain Morgan is now produced in another U.S. territory, Puerto Rico, and critics say the Virgin Islands’ subsidy for the new distillery there, along with the other benefits, are so generous that they practically guarantees a profit on every gallon of rum produced there by Diageo, the biggest distilled spirits maker in the world.

There's a certain logic to Captain Morgan being subsidized by an administration that spends like drunken sailors

We can’t explain this one and we doubt that President Obama can, either.

He just agreed to pay a British company nearly $3 billion so it can move from Puerto Rico to the Virgin Islands.

London-based Diageo PLC will receive tax credits and other benefits worth $2.7 billion over 30 years, including the entire $165-million cost of building a state-of-the-art distillery on the island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, a U.S. territory.

Virgin Islands officials say the arrangement complies with the letter and spirit of tax law and will help the islands’ sagging economy.

“The U.S. taxpayer is basically being asked to line the pockets of the world’s largest liquor producer,” says Steve Ellis, the president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan watchdog organization.

The Lord Obama giveth to one U.S. territory and taketh from another.

Puerto Rico loses 300 jobs in this move, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It also uses 90% of the taxes it derives from rum on public welfare.

Unfortunately, we know the way this administration thinks. So we’re completely prepared for the announcement that they’re going to spend another billion or two moving all of Puerto Rico’s unemployed to the Virgin Islands.

Would you be surprised?

That settles it: O’Reilly declares ObamaCare unconstitutional

By the way, the word of the day is “smug.” Look it up.

Anti-war protesters offer Obama re-set button

But while the hard truths of war are still in evidence, what’s missing is the non-stop negative news coverage of the conflicts. Another thing’s missing: There are no protesters. No drum beaters at the White House. No mass protests in Europe.

Poor Cindy Sheehan isn't feeling the love anymore. Not from Democrats. Not from the media. Not even from other protesters.
Poor Cindy Sheehan isn't feeling the love anymore. Not from Democrats. Not from the media. Not even from other protesters.

Remember that nasty Iraq War?

Well, this may come as a huge surprise, but it’s still going on. A recent spike in bombings in stories buried deeply in the Washington Post proves it.

And that conflict in Afghanistan? Oh, it’s still going on, too.

Just the other day, an air strike on a couple of fuel trucks hijacked by the Taliban was hit by an allied air strike, resulting in 90 casualties, including a large group of civilians.

Then there are the “lurid photos” – as described by the Wall Street Journal – of Afghan guards and embassy workers mucking about like drunken frat boys. Shades of Abu Ghraib? Nah. Not when Democrats control the government.

But while the hard truths of war are still in evidence, what’s missing is the non-stop negative news coverage of the conflicts. Obviously, during the Obama administration negative news just doesn’t resonate the way negative news did during the Bush administration because, well, because it was the Bush administration.

Another thing’s missing: There are no protesters. No drum beaters at the White House. No mass protests in Europe.

It makes you wonder whether all those crazy parades were protests against war after all.

This should be fun: Japan’s first lady says she was abducted by aliens and knew Tom Cruise in a prior life

Miyuki Hatoyama, wife of Japan’s Prime Minister-elect, Yukio Hatoyama, is a lifestyle guru, a macrobiotics enthusiast, an author of cookery books, a retired actress, a divorcee, and a fearless clothes horse for garments of her own creation, including a skirt made from Hawaiian coffee sacks. Sure, Michelle Obama has been anointed Most Stylish First Lady In History and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is undoubtedly the hottest first lady ever and Italy’s first lady is busy divorcing her playboy husband. But most of the world’s first ladies just blend into the background.

That’s about to change according to the Independent:

Miyuki Hatoyama, wife of Japan’s Prime Minister-elect, Yukio Hatoyama, is a lifestyle guru, a macrobiotics enthusiast, an author of cookery books, a retired actress, a divorcee, and a fearless clothes horse for garments of her own creation, including a skirt made from Hawaiian coffee sacks. But there is more, much more. She has travelled to the planet Venus. And she was once abducted by aliens.

The 62-year-old also knew Tom Cruise in a former incarnation – when he was Japanese – and is now looking forward to making a Hollywood movie with him. “I believe he’d get it if I said to him, ‘Long time no see’, when we meet,” she said in a recent interview. But it is her claim in a book entitled “Very Strange Things I’ve Encountered” that she was abducted by aliens while she slept one night 20 years ago, that has suddenly drawn attention following last Sunday’s poll.

Perfect. Hatoyama can remember meeting Tom Cruise in a prior life, but Michelle Obama can’t remember meeting Bill Ayers in this life.

Hill called on a young woman at a recent town hall meeting. She told him she was a journalism student working on a school project and objected to the fact that she was told she couldn’t videotape the event.

Student: Why can’t I film this? Isn’t this my right?

Hill: This is my town hall meeting, and I set the rules, and I’ve had these rules … (crowd jeers) … Let me repeat that one more time. This is my town hall meeting for you. And you’re not going to tell me how to run my Congressional office. Now, the reason why I don’t allow filming is that usually the films that are done end up on YouTube in a compromising position.

Apparently Hill didn’t notice that someone else in the crowd was breaking his rules and taping his answer.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we’re proud to present Congressman Baron Hill’s YouTube debut.

Can Obama steer America between a rock and hard place to Copenhagen?

The destination is the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.

The ravenous Scylla is the set of high expectations that this tender, ailing world holds for Barack Obama–particularly at that conference. Here he comes to save the day! Surely, if anyone can rally the planet to save itself it’s the community organizer who rose from the blood-spattered ruins of the South Side of Chicago to depose the most virulent strain of American conservatism yet. And the world is counting on him…

It’s enough to make a community organizer, whose task is to organize the world community, lose his cool. As you pass through these perilous straits, Barack, keep your eye on the Little Mermaid. Her waters are getting warm.

Sounds like Jeff’s waters are getting a little warm, too.

Man with assault rifle at Obama rally was part of radio stunt

It was big news last week when a man showed up at an ObamaCare rally with a semi-automatic assault rifle slung over his shoulder and a pistol strapped on his hip. Now it turns out the whole thing was just a radio stunt. A stunt by gun rights advocates, to be sure, but a stunt nonetheless.

Where are the headlines announcing that it was just a radio stunt?

It was big news last week when a man showed up at an ObamaCare rally with a semi-automatic assault rifle slung over his shoulder and a pistol strapped on his hip.

Headlines screamed. News anchors were atwitter. And talk radio was abuzz.

Now it turns out the whole thing was just a radio stunt. A stunt by gun rights advocates, to be sure, but a stunt nonetheless.

Conservative talk radio host Ernest Hancock went on CNN and said he had been in the middle of interviewing Chris (no last name provided) when the news network’s cameras showed up. The two men have known each other for two years.

Rick Sanchez: The more we look into this, the more it appears that it was really planned.
Hancock: Oh, it’s more planned than you think.
Rick Sanchez: This was a publicity stunt.
Hancock: Oh, absolutely.

Unfortunately, the CNN interview has been removed from YouTube and replaced with a notice that says, “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.”

See, this is one of the reasons we hate the media. The horrifying news of an armed racist at an Obama rally, a potential assassin targeting America’s first black president, spread across the media like wildfire.

But when the reality of the situation is revealed, the media finds it far less worthy of their valuable airtime and newsprint.

We’re embarrassed to have to find the truth at CNN and the Huffington Post.

The best Chappaquiddick joke ever

Ed Klein, former Newsweek editor and long-time friend of Teddy Kennedy, appeared on Diane Rehm’s radio show and revealed something very disturbing about the late senator: he would ask people, have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?

Ed Klein, former Newsweek editor and long-time friend of Teddy Kennedy, appeared on Diane Rehm’s radio show and revealed something very disturbing about the late senator:

“I don’t know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was, indeed, Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick? That is just the most amazing thing. Its not that he didn’t feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.”

So in honor of The Lion of the Senate, here’s our all-time favorite Teddy Kennedy joke:

An aide went into Rose Kennedy’s bedroom early one morning to tell her the sad news that Jackie had died. “That’s terrible,” the old lady rasped. “Was Teddy driving?”

That, my friends, is a great joke. It’s short (just 29 words), yet manages to include three different Kennedys and evokes Chappaquiddick without mentioning it by name.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and let them know you’re Alec Baldwin
