Great news! Most union members now work for the government.

Federal, state, local. Add ‘em all up and you discover that a majority of union members now work for the government. At least that’s what a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows.

government union workersOf course, since the report comes from the BSA, it was probably produced by union members, so who knows how accurate it may be.

Heritage.org lays out the depressing facts:

New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show that a majority of American union members now work for the government. The pattern of unions adding members in government while losing members in the private sector accelerated during the recession. The typical union member now works in the Post Office, not on the assembly line.

… The BLS’s annual report on union membership shows the labor movement’s decline in membership continued in 2009. While a full 23.0 percent of Americans belonged to labor unions in 1980, by 2008 only 12.4 percent did. In 2009, that figure dropped slightly to 12.3 percent.[2] There are now 15.3 million union members in the United States, 770,000 fewer than in 2008.

… What is newsworthy, however, is another figure reported by the BLS: 52 percent of all union members work for the federal or state and local governments, a sharp increase from the 49 percent in 2008. A majority of American union members are now employed by the government; three times more union members now work in the Post Office than in the auto industry.

That’s really only half the story, though.

IHateTheMedia.com’s editor’s next door neighbor owns an engineering company that builds bridges. He’s a liberal who said his company wouldn’t be allowed to bid on government jobs (100% of his business, since there aren’t a lot of private bridges being built) if his workforce wasn’t unionized.

So it may be true that 52% of all union workers work for government, but that understates a significant number of private sector union members whose jobs are dependent on and mandated by the government.

Any questions as to why the unions support big government liberals?

Saddest poll of the year: 62% say no matter how bad things are, Congress can make them worse

nancy pelosi
Nancy Pelosi, the poster child for "no matter how bad things are, Congress can make them worse"

Heading into the final weeks of the congressional election season, 62% of Likely U.S. Voters believe that no matter how bad things are, Congress can always make them worse. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 19% disagree, with 19% more not sure.

This level of skepticism is shared by a majority of just about every partisan and demographic group, including 53% of Democrats whose party currently controls both houses of Congress.

The only exception is the nation’s Political Class. Seventy-five percent (75%) of voters in the political Mainstream say if something is not going well, Congress can always make it worse, but 63% of the Political Class disagree.

Got that? This poll is completely incomprehensible to the Political Class. They think they’re doing a dandy job. They know that if they just had a little more money to spend, they could do it better. And if they had a lot more money, they could do it a lot better.

And don’t forget it, you uneducated bumpkin.

Obama quotes Jimi Hendrix, but picks the wrong song

If the President wanted to quote some lyrics that more accurately reflect the situation we find ourselves in today, he should have gone with Hendrix’ version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower”:

President Obama had another one of those off-Teleprompter moments the other day. They seem to be coming more and more frequently as he looks in the mirror and sees the face of failure staring back.

Has President Obama been listening to a lot of Jimi Hendrix lately? With just under two months to go before Election Day, Obama kicked off the fall campaign season Monday with an aggressive speech targeting Republicans. But it was an off-script moment in the speech that’s attracted the most attention, as Obama accused his GOP critics of talking about him “like a dog.”…

Though Obama didn’t acknowledge it, the line was a verbatim quote from “Stone Free,” the first song Hendrix wrote after moving to England in 1966. “They talk about me like a dog,” the song says. “Talkin about the clothes I wear. But they don’t realize they’re the ones who’s square.”

I can’t get no relief”

It’s so secret that he would have had to kill everyone in the audience if he had accidentally revealed it.

But if the blood-sucking leeches and lunatic liberals in this state elect Jerry Brown, they truly deserve the bankrupt government they get.

Gary Hart wonders why, oh why, greedy Americans can’t be happy with less

The Huffington Post now lists Hart as a “Scholar in Residence.” Writing as only a Scholar in Residence can, Hart confronts Middle Class America.

gary-hart-monkey-business
There's a big difference, Gary, between getting yourself a little and getting by with less

Like most of America, we assumed that Gary Hart of “Monkey Business” fame had fallen of the face of the earth. But the Huffington Post now lists Hart as a “Scholar in Residence.” Writing as only a Scholar in Residence can, Hart confronts Middle Class America.

“There is nothing wrong with high ambitions, expectations, and dreams. Americans lead the world in all of these, and for much of our history with good reason. But almost nothing in this world is guaranteed, including our superiority and inevitable success. Nations and empires rise and fall. Leaders come and go. Sometimes we’re up, and sometimes we are down. History is a sobering teacher. About the only thing that is inevitable is human folly.”

This seems to be a very thinly veiled attack on the concept of American exceptionalism and nothing said elsewhere in the article dispels that theory. In fact, it gets worse.

“Are our dreams permanently shattered?” asks the frisky former Senator. “Are we in a sharp decline? Is our hour over? No, I don’t think so. A certain kind of way of life may be coming to an end, one marked by excessive consumption, waste, and inefficiency. And if you have defined your life or your nation’s life by those standards, it does look gloomy. But what really is wrong with smaller cars and more efficient homes and deferred gratification and saving for a rainy day?”

This from a man who spent a considerable amount of time cruising around on luxury yachts while balancing a blonde on one knee and a beer on the other.

In answer to the former Senator’s questions, we say there’s nothing wrong with driving a small car or having an energy efficient home or even with saving for a rainy day. What Middle America doesn’t like, Mr. Hart, is leftist elitists proposing a somewhat less satisfying lifestyle for “the other guy” while they continue to live a life of luxury and excess.

Unless, that is, Mr. Hart now gets his kicks with smaller boats and smaller blonds.

French newspaper ad blames us for 9/11 terror attacks (the World Trade Center was just too tall, damn it)

French newspaper Courrier International created an ad suggesting that we could have avoided 9/11 if we’d simply built the twin towers a bit shorter.

Every year, at least one advertiser somewhere in the world is guaranteed to exploit the 9/11 attacks with a tasteless ad.

French newspaper Courrier International gets the “honor” this year with an ad suggesting that we could have avoided 9/11 if we’d simply built the twin towers a bit shorter. The ad shows two jets flying over a substantially shorter World Trade Center along with the headline, “Learn to anticipate.”

ad france world trade center

MyFoxLA has the tasteless details:

The website Ads of the World reported that Saatchi & Saatchi France is the agency behind the ad.

The Montreal Gazette reported that the campaign is an attempt to imply that the newspaper’s coverage will help readers anticipate major events.

The 9/11 terror attack are only one of the events used in the promotion. The campaign also uses the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy and the 1969 moon landing.

Many who have posted comments about the ad on various websites are upset about its insensitivity.

“Stupid beyond belief. There will NEVER be a right time to reference 9/11 in advertising,” reads one comment on the website AdFreak.com. “Oooh, I know, perhaps the Saatchi creatives could do one on the deportation of gypsies from their country,” quipped another post on the site.

Considering that the campaign features three American news events, perhaps the campaign should feature a new headline:

France. Where you can anticipate that nothing of any significance will ever happen.

John Boehner’s simple plan: (1) Cut spending, (2) Stop the tax hike, (3) Create jobs. Any questions?

Barack Obama claims that he hasn’t seen any plans from Republicans. How about this one from House Republican leader John Boehner.

Barack Obama claims that he hasn’t seen any plans from Republicans. How about this one from House Republican leader John Boehner.

The Ohio Republican told Good Morning America that both parties should work together to create jobs by cutting spending to 2008 levels and freezing all tax rates for two years.

“What I’d like to do is work on a bipartisan basis to do two things. First, instead of waiting until after the election to put together some big omnibus spending bill with a bunch of wasteful spending, why wouldn’t we do this? Why don’t we pass a bill this month at 2008 spending levels — before the TARP, before the bailouts, before the ‘stimulus’ — and let’s put some certainty in the economy. … Secondly, why wouldn’t we work together to make it clear that all current tax rates will be extended for the next two years? What that will do is help small businesses, who have no clue what the coming tax rates are going to be, and give them some certainty. If we’re able to do this together, I think we’ll show the American people that we understand what’s going on in the country and we’ll be able to get our economy moving again and get jobs growing in America.”

Of course, George Stephanopoulos looked at him like he had two heads. Which, of course, would be two more than the Democrats seem to have these days.

Empty suit faces empty seats: Obama can’t fill junior college rec center

Obama fans get ready to do "the wave" at his speech in Parma, Ohio

Oh, how times have changed. The man who used to fill stadiums is now having trouble filling community college recreation centers.

Cleveland.com has the story of the empty suit who now faces seats as empty as his promises:

With less than an hour before President Obama’s scheduled speech, 75 seats remained empty in the recreation center at Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus.

So organizers went around campus and recruited more students to fill the seats.

Student Jennifer Rahal, of Parma Heights, whose class was canceled today, was working on her art work in the coffee shop in the basement of the building when the call went out for more guests.

After dropping off their stuff at a bag check, the newly invited guests cleared security and filed into the gym.

The math on this one is pretty simple: Empty suit plus empty promises equals empty seats.

Who’s your favorite talk show host? And where do they rank in audience size?

It’s just not possible for Stephanie Miller, for example, to have ten percent of the listeners that Rush Limbaugh does. Just not possible.

This ranking of radio talk show hosts and the size of their audiences comes from Talkers magazine, the bible of the talk show industry. Well, call us blasphemous, but we doubt the word of the bible.

audience radio talk show hosts

We buy the rankings, but not the audience size of the liberal talk show hosts. It’s just not possible for Stephanie Miller, for example, to have ten percent of the listeners that Rush Limbaugh does. Just not possible.

Now, perhaps, the discrepancy can explained by the fact that Miller’s show airs in the more highly-rated morning slot, while Limbaugh airs in the generally lower-rated midday time period. But that still can’t explain away the fact that Miller doesn’t air in most major markets and has low ratings in the markets in which she does air.

So either the lib talkers’ numbers are grossly overstated or Limbaugh’s numbers are grossly understated.

And that would be the only thing understated about Rush Limbaugh.

Von Anhalt said German anatomist Gunther von Hagens should carry out the procedure, after his controversial world exhibitions displaying plastinated bodies with just muscles and tendons intact.

The Marx Brothers are finally figuring out that their economic models don't work

The Associated Press has news of the aging Communist’s moment of clarity:

Fidel Castro told a visiting American journalist that Cuba’s communist economic model doesn’t work, a rare comment on domestic affairs from a man who has conspicuously steered clear of local issues since stepping down four years ago.

The fact that things are not working efficiently on this cash-strapped Caribbean island is hardly news. Fidel’s brother Raul, the country’s president, has said the same thing repeatedly. But the blunt assessment by the father of Cuba’s 1959 revolution is sure to raise eyebrows.

Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, asked if Cuba’s economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, and Castro replied: “The Cuban model doesn’t even work for us anymore” Goldberg wrote Wednesday in a post on his Atlantic blog.

He said Castro made the comment casually over lunch following a long talk about the Middle East, and did not elaborate. The Cuban government had no immediate comment on Goldberg’s account.

News of the future: August 12, 2060 (Dateline, Chicago): Former President Barack Obama today admitted that his economic model doesn’t work anymore.

Im_A_Democrat is an IHateTheMedia.com reader who posts his incisive comments in response to many of our articles. He has submitted the following editorial:

I’m A Democrat. And I hate the fact that MSNBC.com produced this horrible cartoon.

If you ask me, it’s pretty sick that someone would draw our beloved Muslim President nailed to a cross. But it was our side that did it, so, of course, there’s no moral outrage in the rest of the media. And that’s what upsets me — a little more moral outrage from the left might help us score some political points that we really need right now.

See, if someone on the right had drawn this cartoon, we could’ve said all the things we always say about the right being racist, Islamophobic, hayseed hicks desperately clinging to their guns and their God, crucifying the Lord Barack Almighty despite the miracles he’s performed for this country.

Oh, who the hell am I kidding? We’re going to say those things about you conservative loons anyway.

But you can still help us out. This boneheaded MSNBC artist screwed up and drew Obama hanging on a cross. We need someone on the right to draw him hanging from a tree, the way good Democrats in the Ku Klux Klan hung black people from trees for generations. (You may recall that West Virginia Democrat Senator Robert Byrd once advocated doing in order to get elected. And Bill Clinton said he made all Democrats proud.) That cartoon, my conservative friends, would be solid proof that you are the horrible racists we Democrats keep saying you are.

While our liberal media brethren have ignored how disgusting it is to show someone hanging on a cross, especially the first black President, there’s no way they’d ignore a cartoon that showed him hanging from a tree. That would be offensive. Our liberal media friends would go nuts.

Are there any conservative cartoonists out there who’d like to help us out in November? We could use your help right about now.

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve…

Overall, 41% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. Fifty-eight percent (58%) disapprove.

Today’s Approval Index rating is the lowest yet recorded for this president. Overall Job Approval matches the lowest recorded number, and the number who Strongly Disapprove matches the highest yet recorded.

Nothing to cheer about: Team USA cheerleaders cover up for Team Iran

Team USA kicked Iran’s ass in the basketball world championships. The final score was the United States 88, Iran 51.

But on the political correctness scoreboard the score was Iran 1, USA 0 because the Team USA dancers were required to wear long pants in what was called a “nod to Muslim law.”

The Associated Press uncovered the cover-up:

[In] a nod to the Iranian supporters in Istanbul — which included minister of sports Ali Saeedlou earlier in the tournament — dancers were ordered to cover up for their performances during the game. Islam prohibits women from exposing their skin in public, and Iranian officials had turned their backs when the dancers performed in earlier games.

The dancers wore long pants Wednesday.

This, of course, is in sharp contrast to the way the Obama administration normally drops its pants for the Iranians.

Barack Obama and Tim Geithner walk into a bar…

You’re going to wish this was a joke, but it’s not. $700,000 in stimulus money went to a Northwestern University researcher to write software that tells jokes.

ABC 7 Chicago has the unfunny facts:

Professor Kristian Hammond says it’s serious work. But some critics say using stimulus money for this type of research is no laughing matter.

Critics say the project is simply a waste of taxpayer money. But the man behind this next-generation software say those detractors, which include Senator John McCain, have never bothered to call and ask him what his work is all about.

In a building at Northwestern in Evanston, computer sciences professor Kristian Hammond is trying to make computers funny.

“Understanding what makes humor, what makes irony, what makes interesting juxtapositions, to understand what that means we can actually create it. We can create new material,” said Hammond.

It’s all heady, academic stuff, but Hammond is trying to give computers intuition.

The next-generation software looks at news stories and social media, and brings words together to form original lines of thought — a joke, if you will.
The material generated so far is not exactly killer standup material, and Hammond’s critics certainly aren’t laughing.

The project has received more than $700,000 in federal stimulus money. Recently, Senator McCain singled out Hammond’s project, calling it a “joke machine,” one of many examples, he said, of wasteful spending.

“None of them really have any meaningful impact on creating jobs,” McCain said.

Late night comedians like David Letterman will undoubtedly line up to buy Hammond’s software. Why hire a highly-paid staff of comedy writers when a computer can crank out your nightly monologue. And it doesn’t really matter that the software doesn’t produce “killer material” because Letterman stopped being funny about 20 years ago.

Michelle Antoinette ignored advisors who said trip to Spain would hurt her public approval

Michelle Obama gave the death glare to aides who suggested she shouldn't go to Spain

Nice to see that Barack Obama isn’t the only tone deaf member of the First Family.

The New York Times reports First Lady Michelle Obama’s aides cautioned against her going on the early August European vacation in which she stayed at a 5-star resort in Spain and mingled with royalty. The lavish trip, the aides reportedly argued, could result in harm to her image. “Aides say privately that they warned her there would be a cost to the trip, but she overruled them, insisting it was a rare chance to spend time with Sasha and with a friend whose father had died,” the paper reports. “But the intensity of the uproar — including accusations that she was a ‘modern-day Marie Antoinette’ — caught the White House and Mrs. Obama off guard.”

The trip resulted in the first extended negative press of the First Lady’s time in the White House. Critics questioned why Mrs. Obama chose to go to a glitzy, high-priced resort at a time when unemployment is high and many Americans are suffering economically.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC poll taken during the trip showed that just 50 percent of those surveyed had a positive impression of Mrs. Obama — down from 64 percent in April 2009 and 55 percent earlier this year. Nevertheless, she remains marginally more popular than her husband, whose personal approval rating was at 46 percent in the Journal poll.

“What’s that? I can’t hear you. I have gazpacho in my ears.”

Only 19% felt that way in August 2009 as voters stormed congressional town hall meetings across the country to complain about pending health care legislation, the bailouts of the auto and financial industry and the $787-billion economic stimulus plan.

Just two months ago, 63% favored a smaller government, while 26% opted for a more active one.

Perfect: Los Angeles builds new school on toxic dump, names it after Al Gore built

Al Gore has been honored appropriately by the Los Angeles School District. They built a new school on top of a toxic dump and named it after the man who has come to symbolize environmental voodoo.

al-gore-statue
A statue of Al Gore standing in front of the new Carson-Gore Academy. Oh, wait, that's actually Al Gore.

Al Gore has been honored appropriately by the Los Angeles School District. They built a new school on top of a toxic dump and named it after the man who has come to symbolize environmental voodoo.

There are some classic comments in the L.A. Times report on the new school, the Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences, which is named after Rachel Carson and Gore, the world’s two leading purveyors of environmental nonsense:

“Renaming this terribly contaminated school after famous environmental advocates is an affront to the great work that these individuals have done to protect the public’s health from harm,” an environmental coalition wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles Unified School District. Making sure the school is safe “would be an even better way to honor their contribution to society.”

Construction crews were working at the campus up to the Labor Day weekend, replacing toxic soil with clean fill. All told, workers removed dirt from two 3,800-square-foot plots to a depth of 45 feet, space enough to hold a four-story building. The soil had contained more than a dozen underground storage tanks serving light industrial businesses.

Additional contamination may have come from the underground tanks of an adjacent gas station. A barrier will stretch 45 feet down from ground level to limit future possible fuel leakage.

An oil well operates across the street, but officials said they’ve found no associated risks. Like many local campuses, this school also sits above an oil field, but no oil field-related methane has been detected.

Groundwater about 45 feet below the surface remains contaminated but also poses no risk, officials said.

Because the district imported clean dirt, the school is probably safe at the moment, said Jane Williams, executive director of the Kern County-based California Communities Against Toxics. But she and other critics, including Robina Suwol, who heads the locally based California Safe Schools coalition, worry that the pollution sources have not been adequately identified and that the dirty groundwater could recontaminate the soil.

Got that? The school is “probably” safe “at the moment.” Just imagine how excited the kids will be on their first day of school. And just imagine how excited the parents will be if the kids survive.

When asked if he has any regrets, Levi Johnston replied, “I don’t really regret anything. But the only thing I wish I wouldn’t have done is to put out that apology [to Sarah Palin] ’cause it kind of makes me sound like a liar. And I’ve never lied about anything. So that’s probably the only thing. The rest of the stuff I can live with.”

The only possible explanation for Johnston’s butchery of logic and the English language is the fact that the Early Show doesn’t drug screen its guests.

It also shows the media’s willingness to forgive anyone anything should they choose to attack Palin.
