Gettin’ out while the gettin’s good: Huckabee alligator leaps fence and escapes

Political pundits are analyzing repercussions to Mike Huckabee’s presidential aspirations after an alligator escaped from the Huckabee Delta Rivers Nature Center.

Political pundits are furiously analyzing the tactical repercussions to Mike Huckabee’s presidential aspirations after a nine foot alligator escaped from the Gov. Mike Huckabee Delta Rivers Nature Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

"Shoes" was relieved to learn that Nancy Pelosi hadn't really drained the swamp

The American alligator, affectionately nicknamed “Shoes” by male staffers at the nature center – and “Purse” by the female staffers – apparently jumped a chain link fence and then slithered under a gate in a second fence. At least that’s what staffers hope after cautiously searching the grounds and peeking under the center’s main building, which sits up on stilts.

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission spokesman Keith Stephens, standing in the bed of his Game and Fish pickup truck, his eyes darting left and right, said he believes the alligator is now in the nearby swamps mingling with other alligators that live in the water. Then he quickly left the area, saying he had business elsewhere.

In spite of assurances by the nature center, many area grade schools have cancelled planned visits.

“It’s a bad sign for Huckabee’s chances in the presidential race,” said one longtime observer of Arkansas politics (who happens to be the author of this article). “In Arkansas, when the reptiles start jumping ship, well, your campaign is in trouble. You never saw gators leaping fences to escape the Gov. Bill Clinton Nature Center.”

Eric Holder joins the parade of Obama administration tax deadbeats

Another member of the Obama administration has joined the long, distinguished list of Democrat tax deadbeats. This time it’s the Honorable Eric Holder, Attorney General of the United States.

Another member of the Obama administration has joined the long, distinguished list of Democrat tax deadbeats. This time it’s the Honorable Eric Holder, Attorney General of the United States, who talks the talk, but walks out when the bill arrives.

eric-holder
Attorney General Eric Holder has just been so darn busy battling terrorists and fighting voter fraud that he completely forgot to pay those darn taxes

The New York Post has the deadbeat details:

US Attorney General Eric Holder and his brother failed to pay the property taxes on their childhood home in Queens, which they inherited last August after their mother died, The Post has learned.

And because their ailing mom, Miriam, was already behind on two quarterly tax bills when she succumbed to illness on Aug. 13, the charges went unpaid for more than a year — growing to $4,146.

It wasn’t until The Post confronted Holder last week about the delinquency that he and younger brother William Holder finally paid up Friday, including $73.14 in interest.

The siblings “weren’t aware of the initial missed payments, which happened in the last months of their mother’s life when she was battling illness,” said a Holder spokesman.

The subsequent unpaid bills “occurred during a time period in which the disposition of the estate is still being resolved,” said Department of Justice spokesman Matthew Miller.

“They just weren’t aware.” Next time the IRS comes after you for non-payment of your taxes, we suggest that you simply invoke the Holder defense and tell them that “you just weren’t aware.”

Stalin’s version of American Idol: It was like Earth Hour in reverse

How did Soviet citizens vote for their favorite contestants in Eurovision Song Contest during the period of joseph Stalin?

When Stalin ruled the Soviet Union, telephones were in very short supply. And on top of that, cell phones, texting and computers were still just rough concepts in little baby Bill Gates’ mind.

So how did Soviet citizens vote for their favorite contestants in Eurovision Song Contest?

They watched the show in the dark, then turned on their lights when they wanted to vote for a contestant. The Soviet power company measured power spikes and the winner was supposedly the contestant who made power usage jump the most.

Sounds apocryphal to us. We’re not sure Stalin had any interest in demonstrating democracy to the citizens of the USSR.

Gag: Michelle Obama says, “I want to embrace the country that I love.”

Here’s a clip from Monday’s The View in which the hens gather to cluck over Michelle Obama and the poor, unfortunate woman who’s married to Joe Biden.

And when we say gag, you have your choice of definitions. If she was making a joke, gag means one thing. If she’s serious, gag has a completely different meaning.

Here’s a clip from Monday’s The View in which the hens gather to cluck over Michelle Obama and the poor, unfortunate woman who’s married to Joe Biden.

“I want to embrace the country that I love,” Michelle babbled. “The country that I know is positive and fair and there’s so much of that out there, that’s it very easy to kind of push the other stuff aside and not take it in. It’s easier than you’d imagine.”

That’s not fair, Michelle. Don’t keep us in suspense any longer. Which country is it?

Shocker: Roger Ebert didn’t like Atlas Shrugged

Why can’t liberal journalists be honest? If they believe in a specific brand of political philosophy, that’s fine, but shouldn’t they stick to facts when making their case?

Why can’t liberal journalists be honest? If they believe in a specific brand of political philosophy, that’s fine, but shouldn’t they stick to facts when making their case?

Roger Ebert is a longtime supporter of the Democrat Party and unabashed admirer of Michael Moore (They look alike, don’t they? Has anybody ever seen both of them at the same time?) so nobody was overly surprised when he didn’t like Atlas Shrugged, which hit theatres April 16.

Most Ayn Rand fans were actually pleased that he wasn’t pleased, because a bad review by Roger Ebert is often a harbinger of success. And vice versa. He panned Die Hard, for example, a movie so popular it spawned three sequels (so far) and made over a billion dollars (so far). But he lauded Speed 2: Cruise Control, one of the biggest box office bombs in history.

In 2010 he gave three stars to both Toy Story 3, which grossed over a billion dollars, and mega-flop Knight and Day, which didn’t even cover its production costs, saying of the latter, “Basically, what I wanted was more of it.” Him and nobody else, apparently.

Oh, and he labeled Clint Eastwood’s classic Dirty Harry “fascist” while praising Moore’s Sicko for peddling the propaganda of actual real-life fascist Fidel Castro. Go figure.

Unsurprisingly, while giving Atlas Shrugged a rating of one star and making fun of just about every aspect of its production, Ebert also took the time to add a dishonest characterization of Ayn Rand’s philosophy: “For me, that philosophy reduces itself to: ‘I’m on board; pull up the lifeline,’” he said in his snarkiest movie critic tone.

Three choices here: either he doesn’t have the IQ to comprehend Rand’s philosophy, or he never read it, or he’s being intentionally dishonest.

Ebert claims that his film reviews are “relative, not absolute” meaning they are intended for what he feels are the film’s prospective audience. So how come Atlas Shrugged is running an A- rating on Yahoo! User Reviews?

Perhaps he meant some other prospective audience?

Obama administration boycotts Fox News, but admits it has “a great relationship” with Al-Jazeera

The Obama administration, which refuses to allow any of its representatives to appear on Fox News, proudly boasts that it has “a great relationship” with the anti-American Al-Jazeera television network.

Figures. The Obama administration, which refuses to allow any of its representatives to appear on Fox News, proudly boasts that it has “a great relationship” with the anti-American Al-Jazeera television network.

emir-qatar-obama
"Excellent," the Emir of Qatar thought. "He said it just the way I told him to."

Politicom.com has the defining story:

Seven years after then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the broadcaster’s reporting “vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable” and President George W. Bush joked about bombing it, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised it as “real news” in her recent Senate testimony.

Not only that, her staffers, as well as those of the CIA and the Obama White House, were attending the Congressional Correspondents’ Dinner as Al-Jazeera’s guests.

“They are a really important media entity, and we have a really great relationship with them,” said Dana Shell Smith, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for international media engagement, who speaks Arabic and has frequently appeared on the channel. “This administration has empowered those of us who actually do the communicating to be in a close relationship with Al-Jazeera. They understand that the relationship can’t consist of complaining to each other about the differences we have.”

… “The emir of Qatar come by the Oval Office today, and he owns Al-Jazeera basically,” Obama said in remarks recorded by CBS News’s Mark Knoller. “Pretty influential guy. He is a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout the Middle East. Reform, reform, reform. You’re seeing it on Al-Jazeera.”

Re-write that last paragraph thusly:

“Rupert Murdoch came by the Oval Office today and he owns Fox News basically,” Obama said. “Pretty influential guy. He’s a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout America. Reform, reform, reform. You’re seeing it all on Fox.”

We feel confident in saying that’s not going to happen anytime soon. The target of the reform rarely endorses the reformer.

Al Sharpton rants: More lunacy and more racism than you could expect in one 4-minute clip

Crazy comments from Reverend Al during a panel discussion at the National Action Network Spring Dance and Race Baiting Conference.

Let us enumerate the crazy comments from Reverend Al during a panel discussion at the National Action Network Spring Dance and Race Baiting Conference:

(1) Construction sites with no black workers should be shut down, (2) Black students should only be taught by black teachers, (3) Barack Obama is losing ground with blacks because of a media conspiracy, (4) Sharpton beat back Glenn Beck, and (5) The Tea Party is racist.

February 10: Obama administration says Muslim Brotherhood doesn’t want an Islamic state in Egypt.
April 17: Muslim Brotherhood says, “We want an Islamic state in Egypt.”

The folly of the Obama’s Smart Power™ on display.

The folly of the Smart Power™ promised by the Obama administration was put on full display again on Sunday when Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood made an announcement that surprised no one.

Well, no one except Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, that is.

mahmoud ezzat
Mahmoud Ezzat: "The Muslim Brotherhood wants to establish an Islamic state in Egypt."

AlMasryAlYoum.com has the details:

Mahmoud Ezzat, the Muslim Brotherhood’s deputy Supreme Guide, said in a forum held in the Cairo district of Imbaba on Thursday that the group wants to establish an Islamic state after it achieves widespread popularity through its Freedom and Justice Party.

Meanwhile, Brotherhood leader Saad al-Husseiny, said at the forum that the group aims to apply Islamic legislation and establish Islamic rule. His remarks rattled the leaders of several political parties, who said the statements, which were at odds with the concept of a civil state, would worry liberals.

Of course, back in February we were assured by Clapper that the Muslim Brotherhood had no interest in establishing an Islamic state in Egypt. No, they were just a bunch of guys who got together to do public service. Kind of an Islamic Kiwanis Club.

james clapper
James Clapper: "Well, I'll be damned. My bad."

The Daily Caller reminds us of Clapper’s remarkable ignorance back in February:

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said at a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday that Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is a secular organization.

Clapper said the Egyptian opposition group, which many American commentators have expressed fears of coming to power in a post-Mubarak Egypt, is a “very heterogeneous group, largely secular.”

Clapper said that the group “has eschewed violence and has decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam” and “have pursued social ends, a betterment of the political order in Egypt.”

He also said the the Muslim Brotherhood, which has branches in many Muslim countries, has “no overarching agenda, particularly in pursuit of violence, at least internationally.”

Sigh. Smart Power™ at its finest.

Government union calls Republican plan a “mistake for America.” Translation: “Oh, crap.”

The National Treasury Employees Union called passage of the republican Path to Prosperity resolution a “mistake for America.”

House Republicans passed a common sense bill on Friday. In light of the trainload of fiscal disaster racing down the tracks toward us, they voted to freeze federal employees pay for three years and to allow 10% of the federal workforce to wither away through attrition.

fat-cat-federal-worker
Typical federal worker

As you might imagine, it makes a lot more sense to us than it does to federal workers.

Federal News Radio has the details:

The House passed a fiscal year 2012 bill today that freezes federal pay for three years and cuts the federal workforce by 10 percent through attrition.

The budget plan by House Republicans – called the Path to Prosperity – also requires federal employees to pay for half of the defined benefit they receive at retirement.

The GOP plan proposes a plan that promises $6 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade compared with the budget President Obama unveiled in February.

The final vote in the House was 235-193.

The National Treasury Employees Union called passage of the resolution a “mistake for America.”

“Apart from the broad social changes the resolution seeks to make, its anti-federal employee provisions would result in federal agencies having great difficulty not only in retaining the highly-skilled, dedicated employees they now have, but in recruiting new talent to the government,” said NTEU President Colleen Kelley in a statement.

Colleen, honey, you seem to miss one very important point: We don’t need to recruit any more of that great talent to the government. We need to cut it to the bone.

The same bone you’re using on the American taxpayers.

Dare we say it? Vice President Paul Ryan? President Paul Ryan?

It’s impossible to watch Ryan without getting a sense of the man’s grasp of the issues and his willingness to say things that may not be popular.

This is a great video – Congressman Paul Ryan talking about the budget crisis and our generation’s defining moment.

Ryan: What if you’re President and your member of Congress saw it coming. What if they knew why it was happening, when it was going to happen and more importantly, they knew what to do to stop it, and they had time to stop it, but they didn’t. Because of politics. What would you think of that person? Mr. Chairman, that’s where we are right now. This is the most predictable economic crisis we’ve ever had in the history of this country. And yet we have a President who is unwilling to lead. We have too many politicians worried about the next election and not worried about the next generation.

Absolutely brilliant. With no notes and no Teleprompter.

It’s impossible to watch Ryan without getting a sense of the man’s grasp of the issues, his willingness to say things that may not be popular and his ability to lay the groundwork for tough decisions that are going to have to be made.

If it looks like a leader and sounds like a leader …

San Francisco is known for its flaming men, but the one described in this story was actually on fire

CBS San Fransisco has the red hot story:

A man was hospitalized Wednesday evening with life-threatening, third-degree burns after somehow catching fire inside a San Francisco porn store, authorities told CBS 5.

The fire occurred at the Golden Gate Adult Superstore at 99 Sixth Street, near the intersection with Mission Street, in the city’s South of Market neighborhood around 6:20 p.m.

Police officers across the street from the porn shop saw a man run out the front door of the store “engulfed in flames,” SFPD Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.

Some firefighters who happened to be about a block away at the time were immediately summoned and extinguished the flames.

Arson investigators said it was not exactly clear how the man caught fire. Police indicated he had apparently been watching videos in a private booth at the adult arcade when the fire ignited.

To summarize: The guy’s watching porn in a private booth. Friction of one sort or another cause him to spontaneously combust. He rushes from the store.

Authorities may be puzzled as to the cause, but we’re not. This was clearly a case of premature evacuation.

And, yes, we know exactly how much of a stretch that was.

Back to the Future Present: China bans time travel on television

This may be the oddest story of the day. China’s version of the FCC, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, has banned time travel.

This may be the oddest story of the day. China’s version of the FCC, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, has banned time travel. Mustn’t give anyone the idea that they can change the future, you know.

CNN.com reports:

New guidelines issued on March 31 discourage plot lines that contain elements of “fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots, absurd techniques, even propagating feudal superstitions, fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons, and a lack of positive thinking.”

“The government says … TV dramas shouldn’t have characters that travel back in time and rewrite history. They say this goes against Chinese heritage,” reports CNN’s Eunice Yoon. “They also say that myth, superstitions and reincarnation are all questionable.”

The Chinese censors seem to be especially sensitive these days. But for the television and film industry, such strictures would seem to eliminate any Chinese version of “Star Trek,” “The X-Files,” “Quantum Leap” or “Dr. Who.” And does that mean rebroadcast of huge Hollywood moneymakers like “Back to the Future” and the “Terminator” series are now forbidden?

The Obama administration isn’t worried about time travel. No, they’re looking at the polls and simply wishing they could rewrite the present.

If you could travel back in time, where and when would be your destination? And why?

Scott got caught: Leftwing hero Scott Ritter convicted of child sex crimes

Scott Ritter, former U.N. weapons inspector is going to jail for sex crimes.

The man who couldn’t find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq found a weapon of masturbation in his pants and deployed it on his webcam, thinking the person viewing his personalized pleasure was a 15-year old girl. Sorry, Scotty, it was actually an undercover policewomen.

We're happy to report that Ritter is merely grabbing his microphone in this photo

The Independent UK has the story of the jerk off’s jerk off:

After two days of deliberation the jury in Stroudsburg found Scott Ritter guilty on six of seven counts relating to a conversation he had in a Yahoo internet chat room last year with a vice-squad officer who was masquerading as a 15-year-old girl called Emily. Ritter was released on $25,000 (£15,300) bail pending sentencing next month.

… Neither Ritter nor his lawyers commented after the verdicts were read in court on Thursday evening. Ritter had taken the stand on Tuesday, when he claimed that he hadn’t believed it when he had been told during the chat that “Emily” had been only 15 years old. During the chat Ritter had displayed himself naked and masturbating, via a webcam. A video of the webcam images was shown to jurors.

The prosecutor, Michael Rakaczewski, said Ritter was convicted “by his own actions and by his own words on the stand”. He added that “even though a person may know what they are doing is wrong and maybe are intelligent enough to try to avoid it and get away, sometimes the internal drive to engage in these types of deviant sexual behaviours is just too strong.” He said that Pennsylvania had passed new laws enabling officers to try to catch perpetrators such as Ritter.

For some reason, the left is uncharacteristically quiet about this. Odd, considering how they hung on Ritter’s every word when he was a U.N. Arms Inspector and called George W. Bush a liar.

Not doing the jobs Americans won’t do: 70% of illegal aliens in Texas receive welfare

A new study has found that a remarkable 70% of illegal aliens in Texas are on the dole. Since only 39% of native born Americans are on welfare.

Illegal aliens crossing the border to line up at the welfare office

A new study has found that a remarkable 70% of illegal aliens in Texas are on the dole. Since only 39% of native born Americans are on welfare, it makes one think that the phrase “doing the jobs Americans won’t do” should be changed to “not doing the jobs that Americans won’t do.”

The Houston Chronicle tells the terrible tale of Texas taxes:

Thirteen years after Congress overhauled the American welfare system, 57 percent of immigrants with children — those in the country legally or not — use at least one government, welfare program according to a report released Tuesday by the Center for Immigration Studies.

In comparison, 39 percent of native-born Americans with children are signed up for welfare, the report found.

In Texas, 54 percent of legal immigrants and 70 percent of illegal immigrants receive welfare assistance, with illegal immigrants generally receiving benefits on behalf of their U.S.-born children, according to the study, written by a think tank that favors reducing immigration into the U.S.

Overall, Texas tied with California and New York for the second highest immigrant welfare rates behind Arizona.

Congratulations, Texas. Keep up the good work and you’ll be number uno in no time at all.

Blind sow finds acorn: Jon Stewart rips Obama’s “spending reductions in tax code”

We have to give Jon Stewart a little bit of credit for turning his guns on Obama’s newly-minted phrase “spending reductions in the tax code.”

We have to give Jon Stewart a little bit of credit here. Despite being reliably liberal, he occasionally find fault with those on the left.

Take this video clip for example. Stewart begins by making fun of preposterous liberal depictions of Paul Ryan. Funny thing is, the audience doesn’t seem to realize that Stewart’s making fun of liberals when he says Ryan’s plan includes beating seniors to death with an Ayn Rand novel.

Then Stewart turns his guns (please pardon the violent rhetoric) on Obama’s newly-minted phrase “spending reductions in the tax code.” Stewart uses a couple colorful analogies to explain exactly what it means.

The audience was undoubtedly confused by Stewart’s criticism of Obama, but they surely rationalized it to themselves by thinking, “Heh-heh-heh. Must be funny. Heard dirty words.”

When lunchboxes are outlawed, only outlaws will have lunchboxes: Chicago school bans homemade lunches

“Put down that peanut butter sandwich,” the grade school Gestapo ordered, “and step away from your lunchbox.”

We’ve officially gone from compassionate school officials offering lunch to underprivileged school children to over-zealous administrators outlawing homemade lunches and requiring that all school kids eat state-approved lunches.

davy-crockett-lunchbox
Strike one: Davy Crockett is oppressing Mexican minorities. Strike two: Davy Crockett has a gun. Strike three: Davy Crockett adorns a lunchbox containing a homemade meal.

The Chicago Tribune reports that even the kids aren’t accepting the nanny state nuttiness without a fight:

Fernando Dominguez cut the figure of a young revolutionary leader during a recent lunch period at his elementary school.

“Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?” the seventh-grader shouted to his lunch mates in Spanish and English.

Dozens of hands flew in the air and fellow students shouted along: “We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!”

Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: “Do you see the situation?”

At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago’s West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

Liberals must be terribly conflicted in this situation. Should they support this idiotic extension of the nanny state or support the little Che Guevara-ish rebels who are standing up against oppression?

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

“Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school,” Carmona said. “It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It’s milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception.”

Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring “bottles of soda and flaming hot chips” on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common.

Why don’t they just change the name of the school to Michelle Obama Elementary School and Re-Education Camp and get it over with.

GPS: Leave it to the government to screw up a good thing

We give you exhibit A.

The federal government is allowing a company called LightSquared to build a ultrafast broadband network.

Well, you say, an ultrafast broadband network sounds pretty cool. And it is. Except for one thing.

The broadcast frequency used by the LightSquared system just happens to be right next to the existing Global Positioning System band. Tests conducted by Garmin, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer GPS products, indicate that the overwhelming power of the broadband network is likely to cause major problems for all existing GPS products.

Perhaps the folks at the FCC aren’t aware of this, but GPS is kind of a big deal. It’s used by millions of American to navigate around the country’s rapidly deteriorating highway system that our tax money should be spent repairing. And let’s not forget military, civilian aircraft and emergency users.

Here’s what’s at risk:

“The potential impact of GPS interference is so vast, it’s hard to get your head around,” said Jim Kirkland, vice president and general counsel of Trimble Navigation Ltd., which makes GPS systems. “Think 40,000 GPS dead spots covering millions of square miles in cities and towns throughout the U.S.”

Don’t worry, though. The federal government always has multi-billion dollar solutions for the problems it causes. In this case, LightSquared suggests that current GPS users retrofit their systems, adding filtering capabilities to counteract the interference they cause.

Unfortunately, no one knows who is going to pay to retrofit more than a billion current GPS systems. Certainly, LightSquared isn’t offering to pony up the money.

We have a sneaking suspicion that the people who end up paying for this – one way or another – will be those poor suckers known as the American taxpayers.

The Los Angeles Times reports on Obama’s latest Gallup disaster:

It could be gas prices, the budget debate, or simply the usual ups and downs of public opinion polling. But President Obama’s approval rating has dipped to a five-month low in Gallup’s daily tracking poll, reverting to post-midterm election lows.

… Obama’s low approval rating is not the result of the major speech he delivered on Wednesday. Some of the polling took place before he delivered the speech. Rather, a Gallup official believes the results reflect broad public dissatisfaction with the economy.

A sophomore at a local private high school thinks an effort to make Easter politically correct is ridiculous.

Jessica, 16, told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson Show that a week before spring break, the students commit to a week-long community service project. She decided to volunteer in a third grade class at a public school, which she would like to remain nameless.

“At the end of the week I had an idea to fill little plastic eggs with treats and jelly beans and other candy, but I was kind of unsure how the teacher would feel about that,” Jessica said.

She was concerned how the teacher might react to the eggs after of a meeting earlier in the week where she learned about “their abstract behavior rules.”

“I went to the teacher to get her approval and she wanted to ask the administration to see if it was okay,” Jessica explained. “She said that I could do it as long as I called this treat ‘spring spheres.’ I couldn’t call them Easter eggs.”
