Über liberal San Francisco Chronicle won’t endorse Boxer, but can’t bring itself to endorse Fiorina

The mystery is why Barbara Boxer is ahead of Carly Fiorina in the California polls when even the liberal San Francisco Chronicle can’t work up any enthusiasm for California’s dimwitted Senator.

The mystery is why Barbara Boxer is ahead of Carly Fiorina in the California polls when even the liberal San Francisco Chronicle can’t work up any enthusiasm for California’s dimwitted Senator.

This non-endorsement of Fiorina is a harsh condemnation of Boxer’s 18 years in Washington, DC:

boxer-fiorina
The Chronicle hates one, but can't bring itself to love the other

Californians are left with a deeply unsatisfying choice for the U.S. Senate this year. The incumbent, Democrat Barbara Boxer, has failed to distinguish herself during her 18 years in office. There is no reason to believe that another six-year term would bring anything but more of the same uninspired representation. The challenger, Republican Carly Fiorina, has campaigned with a vigor and directness that suggests she could be effective in Washington – but for an agenda that would undermine this nation’s need to move forward on addressing serious issues such as climate change, health care and immigration.

It is extremely rare that this editorial page would offer no recommendation on any race, particularly one of this importance. This is one necessary exception.

Boxer, first elected in 1992, would not rate on anyone’s list of most influential senators. Her most famous moments on Capitol Hill have not been ones of legislative accomplishment, but of delivering partisan shots. Although she is chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, it is telling that leadership on the most pressing issue before it – climate change – was shifted to Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., because the bill had become so polarized under her wing.

For some Californians, Boxer’s reliably liberal voting record may be reason enough to give her another six years in office. But we believe Californians deserve more than a usually correct vote on issues they care about. They deserve a senator who is accessible, effective and willing and able to reach across party lines to achieve progress on the great issues of our times. Boxer falls short on those counts.

Boxer’s campaign, playing to resentment over Fiorina’s wealth, is not only an example of the personalized pettiness that has infected too much of modern politics, it is also a clear sign of desperation.

In past elections, Boxer has had the good fortune of having Republican opponents who were inept, underfunded, on the fringe right – or combinations thereof. Her opponent this time, Fiorina, is proving to be articulate, well-funded and formidable.

The Chronicle may not have noticed, but that same sense of desperation is spreading across the fruited plains. If Fiorina loses, she’ll be the exception come November.

Another Democrat runs from her constituents. And the Constitution.

Congresswomen Melissa Bean, a Democrat from Illinois, refuses to hold any town halls because she doesn’t want to face any unhappy constituents.

Congresswomen Melissa Bean, a Democrat from Illinois, refuses to hold any town halls because she doesn’t want to face any unhappy constituents. So when a couple of those voters decided to take the town hall to her, she ran from them like they had rabies.

But what we love about this clip is when the voters try – repeatedly – to give her a copy of the Constitution so she could tell them what clause authorizes ObamaCare.

John Kerry says, “You know what I’ve noticed? The voters are really stupid.”

In case you were wondering why Democrats chances in November are beginning to look like Custer’s chances at the Little Big Horn, wonder no more. Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has the answer:

In case you were wondering why Democrats chances in November are beginning to look like Custer’s chances at the Little Big Horn, wonder no more. Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has the answer:

john kerry-teresa
John Kerry is smarter than you. Just ask him.

Voters are friggin’ stupid.

“We have an electorate that doesn’t always pay that much attention to what’s going on so people are influenced by a simple slogan rather than the facts or the truth or what’s happening,” Kerry told reporters after touring the Boston Medical Center yesterday.

You mean like “Yes We Can,” Senator?

Oh, we beg your pardon. We seem to have interrupted our intellectual superior while he was musing.

Kerry made the remarks on voters following questions about U.S. Rep Barney Frank’s re-election campaign and queries about securing federal funding for the Hub hospital.

“I think a lot of the anger today – while it’s appropriate because Washington is broken – is not directed at the right people,” said Kerry. “Barney is prepared, as others are, to explain what we’re doing. I think when people hear the facts and they see what we’re doing, it frankly makes sense.”

Sadly, Kerry is correct. We’re all stupid. If we were smarter, we would all marry rich, ugly widows one after another, which would allow us to wile away our lives living in big houses, sailing big yachts and shooting off our big mouths.

But it would take a really smart guy to figure out a devious scheme like that.

Hot, but stupid French politician announces that “fellatio is almost non-existent”

Glamorous French politician Rachida Dati has publicly apologized after confusing oral sex with inflation.

In her defense, it was an easy mistake to make. Fellatio is impossible without a considerable amount of inflation.

Glamorous French politician Rachida Dati has been forced to issue a public apology after confusing oral sex with inflation.

rachida-dati
How do you say "Va-va-friggin'-voom" in French?

The 44-year-old former justice minister and MEP is frequently nicknamed ‘Rachida Barbie’ because of her poor understanding of complicated political issues.

But nobody expected her extraordinary mistake on the national Europe 1 radio station on Sunday.

Asked about overseas investment funds profiteering during a period of economic uncertainty, she said: ‘I see some of them looking for returns of 20 or 25 per cent, at a time when fellatio is almost non-existent.’

In French, fellatio – a sex act performed on a man – is ‘fellation’, which sounds a bit like inflation, which is the same word in French and English.

All politicians suck. We’re pretty sure that’s the point Ms. Dati was trying to make.

Steny Hoyer: Stephen Colbert’s testimony was inappropriate

We’re not sure if Hoyer is unable to criticize Democrats for this stupid stunt or if he is simply so inarticulate that he is unable to clearly express that criticism. Nah, who are we kidding? It’s both. And Hoyer should be embarrassed about his performance on Fox News.

Chris Wallace interviewed Democrat Steny Hoyer and asked him about Steven Colbert’s testimony before the House last week. It was an exercise in futility for Wallace.

Wallace: Was this an embarrassment for the House?
Hoyer: I think his testimony was not appropriate. No, I think it was an embarrassment for Mr. Colbert, more than the House…
Wallace: He was called by the Democratic chair of the subcommittee.
Hoyer: You asked me if, Chris, if the testimony was appropriate. I think it was not appropriate.
Wallace: And he should not have been called.
Hoyer: Well, I don’t know if whether he was called, but I think what he had to say was not the way it should have been said. If he had a position on the issues, he should have given those issues and I think, you asked my personal opinion…
Wallace: And you regret it?
Hoyer: I think it was inappropriate.

We’re not sure if Hoyer is unable to criticize Democrats for this stupid stunt or if he is simply so inarticulate that he is unable to clearly express that criticism.

Andrew Breitbart corners Bill Maher, gets him to admit he’s a socialist

Watch Bill Maher’s face when Andrew Breitbart corners him about his longtime claim that he’s a libertarian and forces him to admit he’s a socialist.

Bill Maher’s Friday night HBO show featured guests Amy Holmes of CNN and Andrew Breitbart. (Seth McFarland was also there, but mercifully, didn’t participate in the following exchange about ObamaCare and the Democrats dwindling hopes for November.)

There are two great moments in this clip:

1. The look on Maher’s face when Breitbart corners him about his longtime nonsensical claim that he’s a libertarian and forces him to admit he’s a socialist.

2. When Maher says the only reason the American people don’t like ObamaCare is because they’re stupid.

Holmes: They talked endlessly about it and their agenda was rejected by the American people, that’s a simple fact.
Maher: Because they’re stupid.
Breitbart: So you’re, you’re officially not a Libertarian anymore, right? I mean, this position…
Maher: Well..
Breitbart: …has run so far from the Libertarian position. Is this, so you admit that you have more of a, you know, European socialist leaning perspective on this issue?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHTER)
Breitbart: Why is that funny?
Maher: I’m..I’m not afraid…it’s not…I’m not afraid to say European socialism works.

Our theory is that low ratings have necessitated some cutbacks at MSNBC and one of the first things to be eliminated was the mirror in Ed Schultz’ dressing room. How else can you explain the Round Mound of Sound attacking New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for being fat?

As NewsBusters.org points out, this has been an ongoing theme in Schultz’ recent attacks on Christie, including such favorites as:

“This guy’s nothing but a big bully.”

“He’s throwing his weight around again.”

“Conservative talk-show hosts and heavy-handed politicians like Christie.”

And now the latest: “He’s a cold-hearted fat slob.”

Congratulations, Ed. Your razor sharp intellect is sure to win many converts to the progressive position. You’ve cemented your reputation as the thinking man’s liberal. You have officially become the left’s answer to William F. Buckley.

Harry Reid scheduled a Thursday vote on the DISCLOSE Act, which will require donors to reveal their donations to political campaigns.

harry-reid-statue

The vote could have been held on Wednesday except for one thing: Senate Democrats were all hobnobbing with the rich, famous and corrupt at a fundraiser for themselves in New York.

Politico.com reports that, “The event has prices raising up to $15,200, but a mere $2,500 contributed or raised buys you access to a ‘VIP reception with members of Congress.’ The money goes to the House Senate Victory Fund, which splits its receipts between the DSCC and the DCCC.”

“’An individual can contribute as much as $60,800 per calendar year to the House Senate Victory Fund,’ the invitation helpfully notes. (These donations will, it’s worth noting, be disclosed.)”

Hypocrisy, thy name is Harry.

Breaking news has been replaced by stolen news at CNN

AP has the devious details:

CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton told staff in June that the network was dropping its contract with the Associated Press and would provide its audience with content that is “distinctive, compelling and, I am proud to say, our own.”

But the AP has been closely monitoring CNN’s coverage and claims that the network routinely uses the wire service’s reporting, according to internal memos obtained by The Upshot. CNN, the memo states, “continues to rely heavily, and apparently systematically, on AP breaking news, exclusive enterprise and in-depth reporting.”

… AP spokesman Paul Colford, while not commenting on the memos, summed up the news organization’s problem with the network’s coverage. “CNN continues to make extensive use of AP’s original reporting, even though they no longer pay us for it,” Colford said. “We are monitoring it very closely, and are considering our options.”

CNN. The most trusted name in news. Even if it’s someone else’s news.

President Obama really ramped up the rhetoric during his weekly radio address by warning all of those listening – both of them – to beware of the Republicans’ recently released Pledge to America.

obama weekly radio address
President Obama closes his eyes before his weekly radio address and tries to visualize himself as competent

It “…is grounded in (the) same worn out philosophy: cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires; cut the rules for Wall Street and the special interests; and cut the middle class loose to fend for itself,” Obama said, adding, “That’s not a prescription for a better future. It’s an echo of a disastrous decade we can’t afford to relive.”

Funny that he should speak of things we can’t afford since he’s spent twenty months – which certainly seems like a disastrous decade – ensuring that we can’t afford a damn thing.

“Republican proposals showed they were the ones not listening to voters’ desires,” the President continued. “And for all their talk about reining in spending and getting our deficits under control, they want to borrow another $700 billion, and use it to give tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires.”

The speech left us wondering how the President got from the $250,000 threshold he’s proposed for higher taxes to “millionaires and billionaires”? And while we’re wondering things, we also wondered how passing legislation that over 60% of American voters oppose could possibly constitute “listening to voter’s desires.”

Twenty-one million people may have watched Bristol Palin’s debut on Dancing With the Stars on Tuesday night, but Levi Johnston was not among them.

The New York Post reports that he had more important things to do:

Reality star Levi Johnston did not join the 21 million viewers tuned in to watch the “Dancing with the Stars” season premiere that featured his ex-girlfriend Bristol Palin as a contestant, TMZ reported Wednesday.

Johnston — who is running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska in a race to be featured in an upcoming reality TV show “Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office” — was reportedly “too busy studying politics” to see Palin do the cha cha cha” to “Mama Told Me Not to Come” Tuesday night.

The father of Palin’s 21-month-old son Tripp is “learning about the major issues that affect Wasilla and reading lots of books,” which prevented him from watching the launch of the eleventh season of the hit TV show.

If true, the Dancing With the Stars premiere marked two notable firsts:

First time a vice presidential candidate’s daughter ever appeared on the show.

And first time Levi Johnston ever read a book.

(By the way, Levi, admiring photos of yourself naked in Playgirl doesn’t qualify as reading a book.)

The final ratings are in for the 2008-2009 TV season and it’s ugly. Viewers are abandoning network TV news even faster than millionaires are moving out of Manhattan.

MediaBistro.com has the happy news:

katie couric finger
And American TV viewers said, "Right back at you, Katie."

The ratings are in the for just-completed 2009-2010 network evening news season. And when compared to 2008-2009 season, “NBC Nightly News” ABC’s “World News” and the “CBS Evening News” have lost a combined 739,000 Total Viewers and a combined 338,000 A25-54 viewers.

“Nightly News with Brian Williams,” which finishes at #1 for the 14th season in a row, lost the least: -138K Total Viewers (8.698M in 08-09 v. 8.560M in 09-10), while Katie Couric’s CBS program, lost the most: -343K (6.053M in 08-09 v 5.710M in 09-10). “World News” which saw Charles Gibson anchor the first few months of the season, and Diane Sawyer picking up in December, lost the most younger viewers: -221K (2.351M in 08-09 v. 2.130 in 09-10).

Remarkably, the 2008-2009 TV season included coverage of the 2008 presidential election and inauguration, which should have given viewership a boost.

So on broadcast TV, ABC News lost viewers. CBN News lost viewers. And NBC News lost viewers. On cable TV, MSNBC lost viewers. CNN lost viewers. And HLN lost viewers. Only Fox News gained viewers.

So here’s a serious question: Would all those left wing networks prefer losing every last viewer to providing balanced news coverage? Or will one of them finally see the light?

What do you think?

Here’s a quick excerpt from her interview with NPR’s Robert Siegel:

Siegel: If your party does lose the House would you step aside as leader?

Pelosi: First of all, I don’t accept that premise in any way shape or form. The momentum is with us. We are out there to dispel many of the misrepresentations that have been going out there for nearly two years by the Republicans and the special interests, the oil industry, the health insurance industry, the banks and their allies.

We’re out there. Our members are great articulate spokespersons for their point of view into their districts. And district by district we feel very confident about the election.

And we believe that six weeks from today, six weeks from Wednesday of this week we will have no regrets but instead we will have a great Democratic victory.

At what point do interviewers begin saying, “Oh, come on, Nancy, get serious.”

President Barack Obama was heckled multiple times during his speech at a Democratic fundraiser in one of the country’s most Democratic cities.
Demonstrators held signs that said “Broken Promises” and interrupted his speech to protest AIDS funding and the stalled repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the policy banning gays from serving openly in the military that Obama has promised to lift.

Obama showed a flash of irritation after he was forced repeatedly off his prepared remarks. “We listened to you, we heard your point,” he told the “young lady” who continued shouting at him about AIDS funding. “This is not the time or the place to do what you’re talking about.”

We don’t often run jokes. But this one made us laugh out loud, so we thought we’d share:

A Republican entered a restaurant in a wheelchair one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. He looked across the restaurant and asked, “Is that Jesus sitting over there?”

Another patron, a Democrat, came into the restaurant on crutches...

The waitress nodded “yes,” so the Republican requested that she give Jesus a cup of coffee, on him.

The next patron to come in was a Libertarian with a hunched back. He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, “Is that Jesus over there?”

The waitress nodded, so the Libertarian asked her to take Jesus a cup of hot tea. “My treat,” he said.

Another patron, a Democrat, came into the restaurant on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and asked for a cold beer. He, too, looked across the restaurant and asked, “Isn’t that God’s boy over there?”

The waitress nodded, so the Democrat directed her to give Jesus a cold beer. “On my bill,” he said.

As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Republican, touched him and said, “For your kindness, you are healed.” The Republican felt the strength surge back into his legs, got up, and danced a jig out the door.

Jesus passed by the Libertarian, touched him and said, “For your kindness, you are healed.” The Libertarian felt his back straightening up and he raised his hands, praised the Lord, and did a series of back flips out the door.

Then Jesus walked towards the Democrat, just smiling.

The horrified Democrat jumped to his feet and screamed, “Don’t touch me! I’m collecting disability!”

Sidney Hill, as you might expect, felt this was a violation of his free speech rights and expressed his opinion. Again, loudly but peacefully.

After a few minutes the dispute escalated. Hill was eventually thrown to the ground and, some would say, assaulted. When the private security officers found out Hill was packing heat, they confiscated his weapon and held him until police arrived.

He was charged with Disorderly Conduct-Challenge To Fight, and Criminal Trespass 2- Upon Premises.
