Poor Ed Schultz is baffled by Barack Obama’s sinking popularity

Ed appears baffled by the numbers and says, “I’m curious what President Obama has done to make people not like him.”

Ed Schultz and his guests took a look at a new poll that shows Americans are coming to their senses losing confidence in Barack Obama. Surely, Ed’s first instinct must have been to accuse Fox News of somehow rigging the poll, but since it was conducted by NBC News/Wall Street Journal, even Ed realized that spin won’t work.

Ed appears baffled by the numbers and says, “I’m curious what President Obama has done to make people not like him.”

Holy crap, Ed, we can’t figure it out, either. Why Barack Obama is obviously The Greatest President In History and the fact that people how somehow been tricked into believing he’s an empty suit by evil Republicans is…is…well, damn it, it’s just not right.

CBS Afghanistan coverage knocked out because its correspondent was knocked up

Lara Logan displays her weapons of mass seduction

That sound you hear is Edward R. Murrow turning over in his grave. Even the left wing Huffington Post is amazed by this admission on the part of CBS:

CBS News’ #2 exec made a strange confession to Broadcasting & Cable magazine: the network isn’t covering Afghanistan as much as it used to because war correspondent Lara Logan is out on maternity leave.

“I would think that the biggest factor in how much less we’ve had on the air really has to do with Lara Logan’s pregnancy than it does with anything else,” CBS News Executive VP Paul Friedman said.

Friedman’s comments appeared in an article titled “The War You’re Not Watching,” which focused on the decline in coverage of the war in Afghanistan as news organizations shifted attention towards the oil spill. Incidentally, the article notes, this shift came as violence spiked in the country…

Ministry of Propaganda strikes again: Mika admits she’s working with the White House

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski revealed on the air that she has a direct line to the White House, making it far easier for the network to get quotes from the Ministry of Propaganda.

Rachel Maddow jumps on the Presidential dog pile, wants “adult talk” from President Obama

Seems like everyone reported the Olbermann, Matthews, Fineman snit fit, but falling through the cracks was Rachel Maddow jumping on the presidential dog pile.

Tuesday night’s speech from the Oval Office seems to have amused the right and really annoyed the left.

Seems like everyone reported the Olbermann, Matthews, Fineman snit fit, but falling through the cracks was Rachel Maddow jumping on the presidential dog pile.

After leading off with a big sigh, Maddow said, “In the big picture I am excited to see the President treating this with the gravity of something that requires and Oval Office address to the nation. In terms of the content of that address to the nation…I think the country is ahead of the politicians, that we all need to hear a little bit more, and I think we could have all taken a little bit more adult talk from the President.”

Like we said, those of us on the right are amused. Not so much by what Obama said, but by what his strongest supporters said.

Is reality finally setting in? Nah, next time a major policy issue arises, they’ll be drawn back to him like a moth to a flame. Or like flies to shit. Take your choice.

If Fred had shown more of this Reaganesque, self-deprecating wit on the campaign trail, he might have won the Republican nomination for President in 2008. And he couldn’t have fared any more poorly than the feckless John McCain.

Eliot Spitzer is about to go from sleazy news maker to sleazy news reporter

In another sign of the impending apocalypse, hooker-hiring former New York Governor Eliot “John” Spitzer is rumored to be this close to landing a regular gig on CNN.

The New York Post reports the tawdry details:

Hooker-loving Spitzer is this close to a deal to co-host an 8 p.m. talk show, sources said.

….A source said, “CNN is so desperate, they’re totally abandoning Turner’s original vision of impartial reporting. With talent like Spitzer on board, the people hosting the news will be more controversial than any guests they could book.”

The Post’s Michael Shain reports Spitzer has “all but a done deal” to get a co-host spot at 8 p.m., previously occupied by Campbell Brown, whose ratings had plunged. Spitzer will become half of a talking-head duo on a show fashioned after “Crossfire,” which CNN canceled in 2005. CNN is searching for a conservative partner for Spitzer, who’ll go head-to-head with Fox’s Bill O’Reilly in the time slot, before announcing the new show.

Going head to head with O’Reilly? In that case, we expect Ashley Alexandra Dupre to be brought in as a special consultant in charge of head.

“When,” Crowley asked, “does the statute of limitations run out on blaming the Bush administration and when is it on you all as the governing — really in the House and the Senate and the White House. When does the economy your baby, so to speak?”

There had to have ben a brief moment when Clyburn did a little internal double take and thought to himself, “What? What? WTF? They’re not supposed to ask Democrats tough questions like that on CNN.”

CNN reports on celebrity cheaters, neglects to mention the one who works for CNN

Selective amnesia struck Anderson Cooper when he aired a story about celebrity cheaters. They included Tiger Woods, Jesse James, Eliot Spitzer, Mark Sanford and David Letterman. But neglected CNN’s Larry King.

It's good to be King. Especially around CNN.

Selective amnesia struck Anderson Cooper when he aired a story about celebrity cheaters. They included Tiger Woods, Jesse James, Eliot Spitzer, Mark Sanford and David Letterman.

But what’s even more interesting is who Cooper conveniently forgot to include.

“What was striking was who was absent — Larry King,” noticed radio producer Tom Somach. “His cheating scandal got as much press as any of the others. I guess the fact that King has a show on CNN protected him. It was ridiculous and an absurd conflict of interest.”

C’mon, Anderson. You claim to be a real journalist (despite that horrible New Year’s Eve gig you do with unfunny comedian Kathy Griffin), yet your story on celebrity cheaters doesn’t mention Larry King, a guy who was on the front page of every newspaper in the country after he cheated on his wife with her sister.

That would be like doing a story about senile octogenarian talk show hosts who wear suspenders without mentioning ol’ Larry.

How’d we miss this one? Limbaugh compares O’Reilly to Ted Baxter

We must have been too busy with stories about the Gusher in the Gulf, because we missed this story last week.

The Hill reports that the first shot has been fired in a possible civil war among conservative media giants:

In a new biography on sale Tuesday, Rush Limbaugh calls fellow conservative talk show host Bill O’Reilly a “Ted Baxter” — after the fictional character on the “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” who was portrayed as a vain, shallow, buffoonish TV newsman.

“Sorry but somebody’s gotta say it,” Limbaugh is quoted as saying in Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One by Zev Chafets. At press time, O’Reilly had yet to respond to the comment.

But it wasn’t just Bill-O who took grief from Big Rush. Limbaugh said he doesn’t consider any of his fellow conservative talk show hosts to be in his league.

“Sean Hannity and Mark Levin are protégés,” writes Chafets, “and [Limbaugh] has defended Glenn Beck.”

But Limbaugh “doesn’t really consider them, or anyone else, in his league.”

Bill O’Reilly as Ted Baxter? Why that’s absolutely insulting. Insulting to the memory of Ted Baxter.

It’s not Obama’s fault we elected him

Just when we thought all of the Obama apologists had gone the way of the pet rock, here comes CNN.com and Gloria Berger telling us “We got the president we elected.”

obama-not-angry-enough
We got what we voted for when we elected a man with no leadership experience.

Just when we thought all of the Obama apologists had gone the way of the pet rock, here comes CNN.com and Gloria Berger telling us “We got the president we elected.”

In her undying support of The Most Misunderstood President In History, she tells us “He was elected because he is cool, calm and analytical. That’s what we wanted to see after George W. Bush, so we made him president. But now the disaster in the Gulf has made many of us want to see someone else — with plenty of anger, emotion and bravado. We want him to yell at BP. We want him to loudly tell us he’s whipping the cleanup effort into shape.”

Here we were thinking that Obama got elected because of all the phony promises he made and lies he told – transparency, no lobbyists in his administration, fiscal responsibility and a pony for everyone.

Then Borger writes what is possibly the biggest understatement in the history of journalism: “Maybe we want him to be George Bush with the bullhorn after 9/11. Only he isn’t.”

One can only imagine that the first version of Borger’s story said something like “Maybe we want someone who acts like he has a pair. Only he doesn’t.”

In a parting shot at us fickle voters, the article concludes, “True to form, we want it all. We want a leader who can feel our pain while rising above it. We say we don’t trust government, but we look to it for answers and cleanups. And we elected Barack Obama. Now we want to change him.”

We think Borger has misread the electorate. We don’t want to change President Obama, but we do want to change presidents.

Larry King’s ratings are falling even faster than his pants would without those suspenders. Sad to say, but the gravel-voiced old duffer scored his lowest monthly viewer numbers in twenty years in May.

The New York Times reports the details of the descent:

According to Nielsen data, the struggling CNN talk show had an average of 653,000 viewers each night in May, its lowest average since the data started being electronically stored in the early 1990s.

He had been averaging about 700,000 viewers each night this year, down markedly from last year.

Last week The New York Times detailed the low ratings of “Larry King Live,” a symbol of CNN’s struggle to compete in a partisan cable news environment.

CNN had no comment about Mr. King’s low ratings mark. In a news release it emphasized the eroding ratings of its higher-rated competitors, noting that both the reigning champ, the Fox News Channel, and the No. 2 cable news channel in prime time, MSNBC, had lost audience share compared with the same month in 2009. But CNN’s numbers have dropped more dramatically.

CNN also emphasized that its sister network, HLN, continued to post ratings gains. Mr. King’s competitor on HLN, Joy Behar, is beating him in the ratings with more regularity than ever.

One suggestion for the New York Times: Never again use the words “Larry King” and “regularity” in the same sentence.

We’re just sayin’.

Guffaws galore: Jon Stewart attacks Obama’s lackadaisical response to the oil blowout

Jon Stewart came back to work rested and reinvigorated after a two-week vacation. His first order of business? Rip President Obama a new one for his hazy, unfocused response to the Gusher in the Gulf.

Stewart’s team cleverly cut together (a) footage of Obama swearing that he wouldn’t rest until the damn hole was plugged, and (b) footage of him doing nothing but resting.

The result is a powerful, yet hilarious demonstration that Obama’s words and actions are rarely in sync.

Warning: As usual, fainthearted viewers may find Stewart’s language objectionable.

Here he is in a discussion with Ayann Hirsi-Ali:

Ayann Hirsi-Ali: Somehow this guy got in his mind that killing other people would be a great thing to do and he would be rewarded for it in the hereafter…
Smiley: But Christians do that every single day, in this country.
Ali: Do they blow people up…
Smiley: Yes, Christians, every day…people walk into post offices…people walk into post offices, they walk into schools, that’s what Columbine was. I mean, I could do this all day long. There are so many more examples of Christians — and I happen to be a Christian, that’s back to this notion of your idealizing Christianity in my mind, to my read — there are so many more examples, Ayaan, of Christians who do that than you could ever give me examples of Muslims who have done that inside this country in which you live and work.

Tavis is right, of course.

The papers are just full of stories about those rabid Christian extremists who gun down their loving Muslim brothers. When they’re not cutting their heads off, that is.

Al-Jazeera’s female news anchors walk out over strict dress code

Struggling networks like MSNBC should consider the burka. They'd save big bucks in the make-up department.

Let’s get to the point quickly. al-Jazeera’s management wanted its female anchors to dress more conservatively. And when they say “more conservatively,” we don’t think they mean “like Ann Coulter.”

Five female news presenters at the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera satellite television channel have resigned over conflicts with management over dress code and other issues, a journalist there said on Sunday.

“This collective resignation is not motivated just by the growing pressure on the presenters concerning their dress code, which was evoked by the media,” said the journalist, who asked not to be identified.

“The conflicts run much deeper,” the journalist added.

The news presenters who have reportedly quit are Jumana Namur, Lina Zahreddin, Lona al-Shibel, Julnar Mussa and Nofar Afli.

The Al-Hayat daily reported on Sunday that they had resigned in the past few days after petitioning management in January over repeated criticism from a top company official for allegedly not being conservative enough in their dress.

We don’t watch al-Jazeera because it’s not part of the basic package on our cable system. But we do get MSNBC. Same news, different dress code.

Like a deer caught in the headlines: Time’s editor doesn’t know who Joe Sestak is

In this case, we’re referring to the candid moment on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show when Mika Mxyzptlk asked Time editor Rick Stengel if the magazine’s latest issue would cover the Joe Sestak story.

Stengel was baffled. He stuttered. He stammered. He tried to fake it until Mika cattle prodded the inner recesses of his mind by saying, “The Sestak controversy. Joe Sestak.”

“Oh, Sestak.” Stengel said. “No. No. There is not. There is not.”

Time isn’t interested in this story. And you shouldn’t be, either. Barack Obama said so.

Andrea Mitchell: Oh dear!

(Begin video clip)

Rush: (Doing Clinton impression) I’m going to kiss your (BLEEP) if you kiss my (BLEEP). I’ll make sure that you — if you come groveling to me, I’ll be happy to help you out here. Now look at what has happened here, they go to Bill Clinton. He’s famous for getting people jobs. Monica Lewinsky offered a job at Revlon. She was offered a job at the United Nations. She didn’t take any of them. But they’ve got Bill Clinton. Isn’t it great, folks, that they found a guy who they know will commit perjury to carry the water here?

(End video clip)

Matthews: Well sometimes even he can get it right. That was pretty good lampooning, I’ve got to say.

Oh, my. Just try to imagine the frenetic liberal wailing and gnashing of teeth if Fox News had made a mistake like this.

TalkingPointsMemo.com provides the details:

CNN, during a segment this morning about a 103-year-old African-American woman, mistakenly aired a portion of a song that includes the word “nigga.” Realizing the mistake, the anchor apologized soon after.

The segment was about Gladys Flamer, a woman from Pennsylvania who is still driving at 103 years of age. After telling the story, anchor Kyra Phillips said, “Miss Flamer, this shoutout’s for you.”

The audio cut to “Fantastic Voyage” by Coolio — specifically, a part of the song with the words “punk ass nigga” — over footage of the woman climbing into her car.

The chorus of that song begins, “Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage”
About 25 minutes later, Phillips acknowledged the mistake and apologized.

“We aired some music just a few minutes ago and, obviously for those of you who heard it, it was the wrong music that aired. It was a terrible mistake and we’re working very hard to make up for it,” she said.

Obviously, CNN was correct in apologizing for putting this on the air. But what the hell, Larry King’s been on the network for years and they’ve never apologized for him.

YouTube pulls video of France’s first lady saying “Put your finger up my ass” in seven languages

UPDATE: Now all versions of the video have been pulled, but we found this photo of Mrs Sarkozy. As they say in France, "Elle est très va-va-voom."

The full 27-minute video has already been pulled off YouTube at the behest of the French government, but this edited 2-minute version gives you a sense of Bruni’s…uhhh…laissez-faire attitude toward sex. (Nice use of French, huh?)

The Daily Mail UK reports the randy details:

The 42-year-old former supermodel was said to be ‘shocked and dismayed’ after video producer Thomas Cazals added the conversation to a new ‘tribute’ on YouTube.

The clip was first aired on cult television show Eurotrash in 1996.

It shows Miss Bruni emptying her handbag and producing two ‘hot international sex guides’ in seven languages, of which she speaks four – German, Italian, Spanish and English.

She then says: ‘We need this kind of book because we’re travelling around the world and we’re meeting new people every day and we must know what to tell them in case we get in bed with them.’

Miss Bruni adds: ‘For example if you have a German person and you want to tell them, “You get me very hot”, you say, “Sie erhalten mich sehr heiss”.’

During the interview she also says ‘Do you like my t***ies?’ in the four languages before describing how to perform a sex act.

The longer version of the video indicates that Bruni has personally surrendered more often than the French army as she reveals affairs with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton and says, “Monogomy bores me.”

We can’t wait for that Roslyn Carter video to show up on YouTube. Hubba hubba.
