Great news: President Obama slashes future deficits by $2.3 trillion

The Congressional Budget Office that made Obama look like a fool by announcing that his estimate of future deficits was off by massive $2.3 trillion.

We take back all the horrible things we’ve said about President Obama. He’s a damn miracle worker. He made the Republicans look like fools yesterday by cutting a massive $2 trillion (with a T) from future deficits.

Oh, wait. Looks like we misread the story. Turns out it was the Congressional Budget Office that made Obama look like a fool by announcing that his estimate of the deficits was off by massive $2.3 trillion.

barack-obama-angry
"The Congressional Budget Office said what?"

The Hill has the details of the deficit:

The Congressional Budget Office on Friday released its analysis of President Obama’s 2012 budget proposal and found it does less to rein in deficits and the debt than the administration had estimated.

CBO estimates Obama’s plan would produce 10 years of deficits totaling $9.5 trillion. By 2021, it would increase the debt held by the public to 87 percent of gross domestic product.

The administration, using different methods, estimated budget deficits would total $7.2 trillion over the next 10 years under the 2012 budget. It forecast that total debt in 2021 would be 77 percent of GDP.

The “different methods” include sprinkling pixie dust over the budget and flat out making crap up. Marc Goldwein of the CBO tells why:

He explained that the difference between the CBO’s $9.5 trillion estimate and OMB’s $7.2 trillion estimate comes from two sources: rosy economic growth assumptions by OMB and offsets for the Medicare doc fix as well as transportation spending OMB did not specify in the budget and which CBO will not factor in.

In other words, they overestimated the good stuff and underestimated the bad stuff.

And in other other words, they lied.

Andrea Mitchell and Cokie Roberts: NPR needs money so rednecks and Indians can hear the news

NPR doesn’t appeal merely to liberal, big city elites. Heaven forbid. No, according to this line of reasoning, the very people liberal elites disdain the most are NPR’s most ardent fans.

In the wake of James O’Keefe’s devastating NPR sting, the mainstream media has apparently reached the “throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks” point. Its arguments in favor of continued funding are getting more desperate and less rational.

Cokie Roberts tried a novel approach on This Week last week:

Roberts: Well, there are not 14,000 radio stations in rural areas, which is where most of the federal funding goes. Most of those stations are the ones that NPR gets hardly any money from the federal government, and the big stations get hardly any money. But the little, tiny, rural stations that, where there’s nothing else on the air, get a lot of money and they would go dark.

andrea-mitchell
"Sure it's a stupid argument, but it's the only one I have."

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell took that line of reasoning a step or two further when she interviewed Majority Leader Eric Cantor last Wednesday:

Mitchell: I just want to point out that NPR and the radio stations are saying that the elimination of federal funding for public broadcasting would be extraordinarily damaging to the services that they provide in rural America, on Indian reservations. Not in the big cities, perhaps, as much where other kinds of fundraising is possible, private fundraising, but in a lot of poor communities, it’s their only news service.

Based on this argument, one can only assume that rednecks listen to “All Things Considered” as they drive their pickups around looking for black and gay men to lynch. And Native Americans listen to “Car Talk” while hand-grinding what we call corn, but they call maize.

In other words, NPR doesn’t appeal merely to liberal, big city elites. Heaven forbid. No, according to this line of reasoning, the very people liberal elites disdain the most are NPR’s most ardent fans.

Unfortunately, the network’s own website offers audience stats that put the lie to this inane argument.
npr-audience-demographics

So NPR’s audience is older, far richer and far more educated than the average American. Yet Roberts and Mitchell would have you believe that it’s poor, uneducated rural Americans who value NPR the most.

As NPR’s supposed redneck audience would say, “Bullshit.” As it’s supposed Native American audience would say, “Heap big bullshit.” And as it’s actual audience would say, “Please pass the Grey Poupon, Th0urston.”

Knut goes kaput: Popular German polar bear dies from severe case of global warming

Global warming has claimed another polar bear.

Well, actually, there’s no proof, not even a hint, that global warming had anything to do with Knut the polar bear’s sudden, unexpected death. But there’s no proof that global warming is killing any other polar bears, either, so let’s just get out ahead of the eco-wackos and blame Knut’s death on the C02 myth, too.

knut-polar-bear
Thanks to global warming, Knut has assumed room temperature

The Guardian UK details Knut’s demise:

Knut, the polar bear raised by Berlin zoo keepers after being rejected by his mother, has collapsed and died unexpectedly in his compound. According to reports, several hundred visitors to the zoo saw him fall. The three other bears that usually shared his enclosure, including his mother Tosca, were not there.

“It’s terrible,” Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit told a Berlin newspaper. “He had a special place in all of our hearts. He was the star of Berlin Zoo.”

Bear keeper Heiner Kloes said that the cause of death of the four-year-old bear is not clear.

Not clear? The hell you say. Michael Mann beat him to death with a hockey stick.

Screw them and the camels they rode in on: Arab League now criticizes Libyan airstrikes it requested

libyan-rebels
Libyan rebels are slightly more excited about NATO intervention than the Arab League is

The Associated Press describes the ol’ switcheroo:

The head of the Arab League has criticized international strikes on Libya, saying they caused civilian deaths.

The Arab League’s support for a no-fly zone last week helped overcome reluctance in the West for action in Libya. The U.N. authorized not only a no-fly zone but also “all necessary measures” to protect civilians.

Amr Moussa says the military operations have gone beyond what the Arab League backed.

Moussa has told reporters Sunday that “what happened differs from the no-fly zone objectives.” He says “what we want is civilians’ protection not shelling more civilians.”

Un-freakin-believable.

Louis Farrakhan turns on Obama, says “Who the hell do you think you are?”

Sad, but true. Minister Louis Farrakhan, the racist nutcase who runs the Nation of Islam, has turned on Brother Obama. What caused this family tiff? Obama’s rather tepid support for the Libyan no-fly zone.

The Final Call has the Nation of Islam information:

To President Obama, Minister Farrakhan delivered a pointed warning: “Don’t let these wicked demons move you in a direction that will absolutely ruin your future with your people in Africa and throughout the world. They don’t like the way you handled (former Egyptian President Hosni) Mubarak! They don‘t like the way you’re handling the situation in the Arab world! So I would advise you to be careful-and move with wisdom and skill.”

And then, Minister Farrakhan offered President Obama some divine advice.

“Why don’t you organize a group of respected Americans, and ask for a meeting with Gadhafi? You can’t order him to step down, and get out-who the hell do you think you are, that you can talk to a man that built a country over 42 years, and ask him step down and get out? Can anybody ask you? Well, well there’s a lot, now, [that are] going to ask you to step out of the White House, because they don’t want a Black face in the White House,” said Minister Farrakhan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ruxMhgEpsY

Don’t know what we like most about this clip. Is it Farrakhan ranting about Muammar GadHafi’s munificent nature? Is it the silly-looking host of the program nodding in agreement, but never saying a word? Is it the Nation of Islam bodyguard trying to look imposing as he stands behind Farrakhan? Or is it the announcer at the very end of the clip saying, “More intelligent conversation….”

Who the hell do you think you are, indeed. Reminds us of Jean Knight’s big 1971 hit, “Mr. Big Stuff.”

“We’re not quite sure how you got the mistaken impression that we want to force Gadhafi out of power”

Let’s call it a flip flop flap. People are understandably confused and angry that the Obama administration is now indicating that, well, maybe it would be ok if Muammar Gaddafi stayed in power.

This, of course, follows by just a few days President Obama’s belated demand that Ghadafi leave power and by just 24 hours our launch of missiles in support of Libyan rebels.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, appeared on Fox News Sunday and said “We’re in a situation now that what we do will depend to some degree on what he does.”

“The focus of the United Nations Security Council was really Benghazi specifically and to protect the civilians,” Mullen said.

Well, sure. Protecting civilians and ousting Gaddafi. Right, Admiral?

“This is not about going after Gaddafi himself or attacking him at this particular point in time. It is about achieving these narrow and relatively limited objectives so that he stops killing his people and so that humanitarian support can be provided.”

Finally, Obama is becoming decisive. It may have taken him 32 days to decide to get involved, but it took just one day for him to decide that we’re really not involved.

Is it any wonder that this guy has our friends confused and our enemies convulsed?

Obama’s OMB nominee has no formal budget training or experience, proves it at Senate hearing

Heather Higginbottom has no formal budget training or experience. So what, you may ask, qualifies her to be nominated as Deputy Director of the Office of Management & Budget?

Every once in a while a story comes along that reinforces our tagline: If we didn’t laugh, we’d cry.

Heather Higginbottom has no formal budget training or experience. So what, you may ask, qualifies her to be nominated as Deputy Director of the Office of Management & Budget other than having a name that sounds like it comes from a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta? Simple. She’s was once an advisor to President Obama’s presidential campaign.

Unfortunately, she proved her complete lack of experience in things fiscal in a Senate Budget Committee hearing on Thursday.

The Daily Caller has the sad display:

President Obama’s nominee for deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) tried, but failed to defend the proposed budget for fiscal year 2012 in a Senate Budget Committee hearing Thursday afternoon.

Obama’s nominee, Heather Higginbottom, crumbled under questioning from Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, ranking member of the committee, about the accuracy of statements the president and OMB Director Jacob Lew have made that the proposed budget will not add to the national debt.

The more than six-minute long questioning consisted of numerous exchanges that saw Higginbottom trying to dodge direct questions regarding the impact the president’s budget would have on the national debt.

Bottom line: She finally ‘fessed up and admitted that Obama’s 2012 budget not only doesn’t pay down the deficit, but adds to it.

Like we said, if we didn’t laugh, we’d cry.

These dogs won’t hunt: Doddering Harry Reid explains why NPR must be funded

Would someone find out if there’s a nice rest home in Searchlight, Nevada. If there is, would you be so kind as to reserve a room for Harry Reid?

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) was speaking, giving kudos to participants in Alaska’s famous Iditarod dogsled race, when an increasingly doddering Harry Reid interrupted and asked for the floor:

“They had a really, really good piece on public radio before the start of the race,” Reid said. “I hesitate saying this because I know I will probably get in trouble, but this is a good reason why the House vote was bad today to defund public radio.”

According to NPR’s liberal supporters, its programming somehow manages to span an unspannable gap and appeal simultaneously to eastern elites and rural rednecks. It appeals to everyone, damn it.

Which, of course, raises the question, if it appeals to everyone why doesn’t it have better ratings?

We feel your pain. It hurts just to read this story.

The New Hampshire Register has the specifics:

An elderly woman’s alleged threat to castrate a politician brought FBI agents and a town police officer to Nortontown Road Tuesday afternoon, but no arrest was made.

Authorities went to the woman’s home after receiving a report that she called a politician Tuesday to threaten harm because the politician wants to cut funding to Planned Parenthood. Police say the woman, who is in her 80s, was “very upset” about the possible funding cut because she used to volunteer with the organization.

The FBI found that the woman did make the threat and that the politician did not confuse the meaning of the phone call — it was meant to be threatening, police said. However, authorities determined the threat “wasn’t credible” and that the woman was not going to act on it, according to police. Guilford police are unsure which politician was threatened, and the FBI investigating agent could not be reached for comment.

Police declined to name the elderly woman.

Alan Greenspan: Stop the stimulus, start the recovery

Massive government intervention to save the economy is to blame for the lagging recovery, Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Tuesday.

CNN Money reports Greenspan’s Randian response:

Massive government intervention to save the economy is to blame for the lagging recovery, Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Tuesday.

Greenspan argued for less government intervention to get the recovery rolling and businesses investing in equipment and plants.

“What we need to do now is to calm down; let things move by themselves,” he said at a forum at the Council of Foreign Relations. “And indeed the rate of activism has decreased significantly and the ratio of capital flow has inched back up.”

“Less activism, more activity.”

“Hi, my name is Barack Obama and I’m here to confiscate your guns”

The Obama administration is exploring potential changes to gun laws that can be secured strictly through executive action.

Gun and ammo sales have skyrocketed since Barack Obama swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America except for that pesky Second Amendment.

What’s that? You didn’t hear him say anything about the Second Amendment during the Inauguration? Well, he might not have said those exact words, but it’s pretty damn clear that’s what he was thinking.

The Huffington Post, of all places, has the details:

Faced with a Congress hostile to even slight restrictions of Second Amendment rights, the Obama administration is exploring potential changes to gun laws that can be secured strictly through executive action, administration officials say.

The Department of Justice held the first in what is expected to be a series of meetings on Tuesday afternoon with a group of stakeholders in the ongoing gun-policy debates. Before the meeting, officials said part of the discussion was expected to center around the White House’s options for shaping policy on its own or through its adjoining agencies and departments — on issues ranging from beefing up background checks to encouraging better data-sharing.

Administration officials said talk of executive orders or agency action are among a host of options that President Barack Obama and his advisers are considering….

President Obama says he’s looking for some good give and take on this issue. Mostly take.

South America’s biggest boob battles breast implants

That damn Hugo Chavez is no fun. No fun at all. It’s bad enough that he’s come out against golf and whiskey, but now the Venezuelan strongman has gone too far. Now he’s pitting the forces of socialism against breast lifts and implants.

breast-feeding
This photo has absolutely nothing to do with this story, yet it somehow seems appropriate

The New York Times has the details:

Blame for the boom in such surgeries here, Mr. Chávez said on state television over the weekend, rested with doctors who “convince some women that if they don’t have some big bosoms, they should feel bad.” He said it was a “monstrous thing” that poor women were seeking breast lifts when they had trouble making ends meet.

We’re certain that when Chavez said boob jobs were a monstrous thing he was referring to the size of the situation, not the size of the implants.

Mr. Chávez’s comments come at a time when Venezuela has emerged as one of the world’s leading markets for breast augmentation. Between 30,000 and 40,000 women here undergo the procedure each year, according to estimates by the Venezuelan Society of Plastic Surgeons.

… “I’ve never seen more silicone anywhere else,” Mireia Sallarès, a filmmaker from Spain who focuses on feminist issues and is working on a project about Venezuela, told the newspaper Tal Cual.

Then the Times concludes the story by reporting the following sentence without the slightest sense of irony.

State media outlets agreed with the president on the subject.

Really? The state media agreed with Venezuela’s President For Life? Well, then, that just about settles it, doesn’t it. Case closed. No story here. Move along.

AFP has the cancellation information:

It's a change of venue we can believe in

The speech in the historic plaza known as Cinelandia, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, “is cancelled,” an embassy spokeswoman told AFP.

Obama instead will deliver remarks at Rio’s Municipal Theatre, the official said, without specifying whether it would be open to the public or exclusively for invited guests.

The Brazilian masses will be crushed – absolutely crushed – because President Obama is universally adored in Brazil. Oh, wait, this just in:

On Thursday, members of an advance US security team were seen inspecting the surroundings of Cinelandia, where anti-US banners could be seen hanging from a road-side fence.

Some social and union groups have declared Obama a “persona non grata” and called for a protest, accusing him of a “bellicose policy of occupation” in foreign countries, and of attacking people “in the name of the war on terror.”

Apparently some of Brazil’s citizens don’t have access to the internet and have’t heard about the 2008 election. They still think George Bush is still President.

That’s the only possible answer, because, you know, all foreigners love President Obama.

On one hand, the guy gave a big speech in Cairo that was supposed to make the Muslim world love us, but it doesn’t. On the other hand, he didn’t say a word in Latin America and they do love us.

The conclusion seems obvious: Shut the hell up, President Obama.

che-obama-tshirt
Of course, they love Obama in Latin America. They also love Che.

The Associated Press has details of Latin America’s supposed Obama obsession:

The White House is touting a changing attitude toward the United States in Latin America as it seeks to minimize anti-American sentiments in advance of President Barack Obama’s visit there later this week.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said Wednesday that Obama is “hugely popular” in Latin America, and overall, the opinion of U.S. leadership there is on the rise. He said leaders in the region, like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, can no longer stoke anti-American sentiment to promote their agendas.
Eager to cast the U.S. and Latin American countries as strong partners, Rhodes said, “There’s no region in the world that we’re more deeply engaged in than the Americas.”

Obama will promote that theme personally during a five-day trip to Brazil, Chile and El Salvador.

Wonder what Obama’s approval rating is in Caracas these days.

If only MSNBC would make socialists squirm the way they make Christians squirm

This is a first. We never thought we’d see the day that MSNBC argued in favor of traditional Christianity.

Here’s a surprisingly hard-hitting interview courtesy of MSNBC.

Christian author and Pastor Rob Bell has written a book titled Love Wins: A Book about Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived. Bell sort of makes up his own brand of Christian theology and MSNBC’s Martin Bashir calls him on it.

“What you’ve done is you’re amending the Gospel — the Christian message — so that it’s palatable to contemporary people who find, for example, the idea of hell and heaven very difficult to stomach … That’s what you’ve done, isn’t it?” Bashir says.

This is a first. We never thought we’d see the day that MSNBC argued in favor of traditional Christianity.

It’s a miracle.

Take an apple to the union thug

The New York Post says things just don’t add up:

The Department of Education pays about 1,500 teachers for time they spend on union activities — and pays other teachers to replace them in the classroom.

It’s a sweetheart deal that costs taxpayers an extra $9 million a year to pay fill-ins for instructors who are sprung — at full pay — to carry out responsibilities for the United Federation of Teachers.

With Mayor Bloomberg calling for thousands of teacher layoffs to balance the 2012 budget, critics say it’s time to halt the extravagant benefit.

Why the hell does the Department of Education pay for union reps to do union business? Isn’t that an expense any reasonable person would say should be paid by the union?

Oh, wait. That’s the answer. The words reasonable and union should never be used in the same sentence.

And thumbs up to you, too, for a job well done, Kenny

Rasmussen has the unpopular particulars:

With gas prices soaring, the pressure’s on the Obama administration to increase the number of permits for deepwater oil drilling. Right now, just 16% of Likely U.S. Voters have a favorable opinion of the man who’ll grant those permits, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, with a scant one percent (1%) who regard him Very Favorably.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 27% view the former Colorado senator unfavorably, including 11% with a Very Unfavorable view of him. But like many of his fellow Cabinet members, Salazar is an unknown commodity to many voters: 57% don’t know enough about him to venture any kind of opinion.

The most surprising number in this survey is the fact that 1% of likely voters regards Salazar Very Favorably. We can only guess that the 1% is comprised of former Village People fans who appreciate the jaunty tilt of Salazar’s cowboy hat and/or Dr. Strangelove fans who are reminded of Slim Pickens playing Major T. J. “King” Kong.

One thing we know for sure is that the 1% can’t possibly be approve of  his performance as Secretary of the Interior.

Hey, President Obama, here’s how you solve the bullying problem

This is the story of Australian student Casey Heynes, a bullying victim who finally decided to do something about it.

President Obama is so concerned about bullying that he filmed a video in which he admitted that he was the target of bullies back when he was a scrawny, jug-eared, half-black kid who might as well have posted a sign on his back that said “Kick me.”

But we’re off track. This is the story of Australian student Casey Heynes, a bullying victim who finally decided to do something about it.

The other kids laughed as they taped a much smaller bully repeatedly taunting and hitting Casey. The victim finally snapped, picked up the pint-sized bully and smashed him onto the sidewalk. The bully struggled to his feet and staggered away while Casey became an internet sensation.

President Obama, you might want to remember the example of Casey Heynes the next time Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez gang up to give you a wedgie.
