It was April Fool’s Day, so you may be tempted to think we’re making this up. Unfortunately, it’s true.
President Obama continues to impress foreign dignitaries with his diplomatic gifts. Not.
During their visit to Buckingham Palace this week, the Queen Elizabeth II of England gave the Obamas a signed picture of herself beautifully framed in silver. The President presented her majesty with an iPod. Yes, you read that correctly – the officlal state gift from the President of the United States to the Queen of England was an iPod. (Now available on eBay starting as low as $15.89).
Unfortunately, the Queen already has an iPod. No word yet on whether she picked it up on eBay.
The iPod came loaded with photos of the Queen’s visits to Jamestown and Richmond, plus photos of Obama’s inauguration. The ObamaPod also came with…wait for it…Obama’s 2004 convention speech and his inaugural address. It also came loaded with show tunes. A whole bunch of Broadway show tunes including the song “Send In The Clowns.” Seems apropos.
Rumor has it that Obama was very disappointed when he met the Queen. “When you said we were going to meet the old Queen of England,” he steamed, “I thought you meant Elton John.”

Speculation is running rampant as to why Barack Obama and supermodel Carla Bruni didn’t enjoy (from his point of view, in our opinion) the customary French double cheek kiss when they first met Friday morning in Strasbourg, France. After all, Michelle exchanged kisses with both Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla, and the two presidents even had their warm manhug. But what went wrong when Barack and Carla’s turn came?
Your guess is as good as ours. In fact, let’s hear your theories.
The Associated Press makes it pretty clear where they come down politically. In fact, they couldn’t disguise it if they tried.
Take Saturday’s AP story on Detroit, for example. They asked three homegrown Detroit celebrities – Michael Moore, Ted Nugent, and Mary Wilson – about the city’s troubles.
They lead off with liberal fantasy moviemaker Moore, giving him seven paragraphs and 204 words. Yet conservative Motor City Madman Nugent merits only two paragraphs and 96 words (previous article). Even politically unannounced former Supreme Wilson tops that with four paragraphs and 104 words. The story even allowed Moore a chance to promote his new “documentary,” but mentioned no current or future projects from Nugent nor Wilson.
We’d like to propose a debate between the Moore and Nugent. A ten round debate. Mary Wilson can be the ring girl. Sell tickets. Bingo. Detroit’s financial problems are solved.
Mortgage your house. Put the money on Nugent.
We’re geniuses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSe38dzJYkY A Spanish court is deciding whether to put former President Bush and six members of his administration on trial for war crimes.
Human rights lawyers brought the case before anti-terror judge Baltasar Garzon, who will send it to prosecutors if he determines that it has merit.
The ex-Bush officials are former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, former Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff David Addington, Pentagon attorney William Haynes, and Justice Department officials John Yoo and Jay Bybee.
Give it a break, Spain. You lost the damn Spanish-American War fair and square. How about we just give you Puerto Rico back and call the whole thing even?
Perhaps President Bush should watch this Monty Python video just to see what kind of treatment he can expect at the hands of the dastardly Spaniards.

You just can’t find a newspaper with more solid economic credentials than the Economist. So a lot of people were surprised when it endorsed a radical, inexperienced candidate like Barack Obama.
Now the respected economic publication seems to be having second thoughts:
His performance has been weaker than those who endorsed his candidacy, including this newspaper, had hoped. Many of his strongest supporters—liberal columnists, prominent donors, Democratic Party stalwarts—have started to question him. As for those not so beholden, polls show that independent voters again prefer Republicans to Democrats, a startling reversal of fortune in just a few weeks. Mr Obama’s once-celestial approval ratings are about where George Bush’s were at this stage in his awful presidency. Despite his resounding electoral victory, his solid majorities in both chambers of Congress and the obvious goodwill of the bulk of the electorate, Mr Obama has seemed curiously feeble.
Feeble? The Economist may be giving him too much credit here.

Socks that cat is dead. We’re not exactly Columbo, but we suspect Bill Clinton may have been the cause of his or her death.
Socks died after a long bout with throat cancer. One of the leading causes of throat cancer is cigar smoke. Bill Clinton loved cigars in the White House (and sometimes even smoked them). The dangers of second-hand smoke have been well-documented. So simple logic leads us to believe that Socks died as a direct result of the former president’s filthy smoking habit.
The Clintons loved Socks while he was young, playful and good for public relations. However, he eventually lost his kitten-ish appeal and when the Clintons left the White House, they dumped Socks like an old pair of shoes.
“Socks brought much happiness to Chelsea and us over the years and enjoyment to kids and cat lovers everywhere,” said a Clinton Foundation statement. “We’re grateful for those memories, and we especially want to thank our good friend, Betty Currie, for taking such loving care of Socks for so many years.”
We bid a fond farewell to Socks, who was the White House cat at the same time that Bill Clinton was the White House horndog.

Looks like there’s another nutcase out there who thought it was a good idea to trade the promise of a social security check for a cave in Somalia.
That’s right. Some lunatic who claims to be American heartily endorses jihad in a video posted this week on a militant Islamic web site often used by al-Qaida and other militant groups. An expert in such things says the video shows what may be the American leader of a band of Somali terrorist with ties to al-Qaida.
As if that weren’t frightening enough, the 30-minute video features an English language soundtrack with rap “music” that can generously be described as amateurish.
Rapping terrorists? Hah! These guys wouldn’t last ten minutes in South Central L.A.

Here’s its scathing point of view:
Allegedly the most charismatic politician in the world, Mr Obama was a disappointment. It sounded as though he had a blocked nose and so his lack of energy may have been a symptom of a cold. Jet lag, too. He probably wished he could have stayed in bed.
He spoke slowly, in a meandering manner. Some might say that he was thoughtful and professorial. Others might call his manner circuitous, even yarny. Am I saying that he was a bore? Oh dear. I find that I possibly am.
And the Daily Mail concluded:
Now (Prime Minister Gordon Brown) placed his hands behind his back and bounced a half inch or so on the balls of his feet, relishing the sound of Solomon Obama’s replies to a few questions from the Press.
Those replies were, as I say, on the chewy side and came out at the speed of an action replay on Match of the Day. So slow, in fact, that at one point a man from the Guardian dropped his tape recorder on the floor. Mr Obama’s best moment was when he was charming about the Queen.
Our old donkey Gordon, by comparison to this American visitor, was for once Mr Eloquent, Mr Quick-Off-The-Mark. Mr Obama had managed to make Mr Brown look good. Another amazing achievement. They left with Mr Obama snaking an arm round his host’s shoulder and ushering him from the room. Very much an ‘I’m in charge’ gesture.
Based on the gushing reports from American newspapers, you might think the British love affair with Obama is so intense that they’re about to overthrow the Queen and put the President on the throne.
Actually, that might not be a bad idea, but it brings up some interesting questions. Would he have to wear the crown? Carry a purse? Would Joe Biden be Vice King?

Here’s how the German magazine Der Spiegel puts it:
Europe was ecstatic when Barack Obama got elected, but the enthusiasm has dampened since he took office in January. On the eve of his first visit to Europe as president, some here are wondering how seriously he takes the Continent.
The Der Spiegel article continued:
When Obama arrives in London on Tuesday for the start of his one-week visit to Europe, he’ll come as a friend, but as one who is still in some ways a stranger. Europe backed his election campaign more enthusiastically than most other parts of the world. But the White House has been too preoccupied coping with domestic crises to devote much attention to this region in the first two months of Obama’s presidency.
And later:
Still, the Obama skeptics in Europe are having a field day. “The notion that Europe is going to rally around this administration is being exploded,” Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, told the Washington Post. Indeed, a feeling of skepticism regarding Obama’s new Afghanistan strategy and his proposals for solving the financial crisis has been making itself felt.
Hillary Clinton read the Der Spiegel article and said, “No problem, Barack. Just take ‘em another one of those reset buttons. They really love those things over there.”

Just weeks after that grand Hollywood delegation visited Iran on a “cultural” exchange, they’ve received bad news from neighboring Saudi Arabia. Movies are now taboo.
As AsiaNews/Agency in Riyadh explained it:
Cinema and theatre are “against Sharia” because they distract people from work and weaken their efforts in achieving progress, said Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Shaikh Abdul Aziz Alu Al Sheikh during a conference on leisure, visual arts and literature attended by students at King Saud University. “Theatrical performance, whether it is a cinema or a song, would generally make an impression that is against Sharia. People need only those (art forms) that are useful to them to change their way of life (in an Islamic manner),” he decreed.
They continued. And so did the nutcase Mufti:
In his address to students at King Saud University, the grand mufti warned against playing chess because it “causes a man to lose his wealth and waste his time.”
Conversely “photography is one of the necessities of life” because it helps in “lectures, [. . .] religious activities [. . .] while maintaining public security.”
“Only the photography of sculptures and models is prohibited,” he said.
Remuneration for poets who attend festivals and cultural events is permissible if their words are good, faultless, without “abusive words or references.”
Finally, the mufti urged students to stay away from cigarettes and avoid reckless driving, especially at night or early morning.
Hold on. He didn’t mention cable TV, did he? Can they watch cable TV Saudi Arabia? If so, we highly recommend Entourage to the Grand Mufti. We’re pretty he’ll like it.
But he might want to watch it with the blinds pulled down.

Blair admitted the President is considering releasing some of the remaining 240 Gitmo detainees in the United States. Of course, he reassured us this would only happen if they can’t be returned to their home countries, because their governments don’t want them back or because the administration thinks they might be abused or tortured by their governments.
Then Blair dropped the real bombshell. He said the former prisoners would have to be given some sort of assistance to start their brand spankin’ new lives in the US of A. “We can’t put them out on the street,” he said.
Are we the only ones who think this is un-freakin-believable? A couple years ago these guys were living in caves in Afghanistan. They had a long term Caribbean vacation. Now we’re going to bring them to the United States and pay them to live here.
Fine. Bring ‘em over.
But not unless each Democrat who spoke in their defense is willing sponsor one of these maniacs, take him into his home, and help him get started in his new life.
Kind of like Madonna with the Malawi kids.

A former Texas pastor has pleaded guilty to possessing and trafficking child pornography. And to make matters even worse, he did it on his church’s computers.
Steve Richardson, pastor at the First United Methodist Church in Royse City, Texas, pleaded guilty to two federal counts – possession of child pornography and transporting and shipping child pornography.
The scumbag faces the possibility of decades in prison, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and lifetime supervised release following imprisonment and restitution. He’ll be sentenced on June 15.
Richardson admitted to trading child pornography on his church computer, but told prosecutors church officials were unaware of his offenses.
This sicko used the disturbing email address “[email protected] when he distributed child pornography to undercover agents over a period of months in 2007 and 2008.
No funny closing here. Have a lovely time in prison, Steve. Hope you make some nice friends.

The NBA just tagged Cuban with a $25,000 fine for criticizing the refs after Denver’s controversial 103-101 win over Dallas. But the interesting thing is that this time he didn’t spout off to a TV station, he didn’t complain to a radio station, he didn’t bitch to a newspaper. Nope, this time Cuban used high technology to earn his fine – he Twittered his complaint.
What was the notoriously hot-headed Cuban’s bitch? He thought a Denver player should have been called for coming off the bench to taunt one of his Dallas players. In an earlier game between the two teams, Cuban was fined another $25,000 for complaining about the officiating.
The good news is that Cuban has so much money that he can laugh about these $25,000 fines. As he said in another Twitter post, “can’t say no one makes money from twitter now. the nba does.”
We think the NBA should reconsider. Cuban also owns the HDTV network, which makes him Dan Rather’s boss. Isn’t that punishment enough?
