Obama dodges tough questions at Seoul press conference, press laughs at his feeble excuse

The Teleprompter was out of commission, so the President was forced to ad lib a reason for ending the press conference early. And as you know, whenever you see the words “Obama” and “ad lib” in the same sentence, you’re in for some fun.

The scene: a press conference with the President of the United States in Seoul, South Korea. The foreign press is peppering the President with questions about his abysmal personal performance on his 10-day foreign trip.

obama-press-conference
Can...not...answer...Teleprompter...is...broken

The President begins to get a little peeved. After all, in his own mind, he is still The One and these foreign reporters are not as subservient as the American press. He sneaks a look at his watch. As the questions get tougher, small beads of sweat begin breaking out on his Presidential forehead. He really wants to get away from these pesky reporters.

The Teleprompter was out of commission, so the President was forced to ad lib a reason for ending the press conference early. And as you know, whenever you see the words “Obama” and “ad lib” in the same sentence, you’re in for some fun.

Let’s turn it over to India’s NDTV for the ensuing hilarity:

By the time 45 minutes had passed, Mr. Obama seemed eager to end the news conference and get on to his next stop: Yokohama, Japan, where he is to attend yet another conference, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. As a president with his own plane, Air Force One, Mr. Obama controls his own schedule. But he cut short his final questioner.

“I’m late for my flight,” the president explained.

“I’m late for my flight.” That’s the best he could come up with? The most powerful man in the world, the man who has the world’s most famous airplane at his beck and call, is afraid he’ll be late for his flight?

We think that NDTV is being too harsh. The President knew that with all these new airline security regulations he would have to stand in line to get his junk checked. And with Bill Clinton in line in front of him, you know how long that could take.

New York cigarette tax leads to reduced consumption which leads to tax shortfall which leads to dumbfounded officials

The economic geniuses in New York raised cigarette taxes by 58%, which increased the price of pack of smokes in New York city to a remarkable $11.60. As you might expect, cigarette sales plunged by 27%.

When will they learn? The economic geniuses in New York raised cigarette taxes by 58%, which increased the price of pack of smokes in New York city to a remarkable $11.60.

There's only one solution, New York: Lower the legal smoking age

As you might expect, cigarette sales plunged by 27%. As you also might expect, cigarette sales are up by more than 40% in neighboring states and Indian reservations.

The NY Post reports the “duh” details:

Sales of taxed cigarettes have plummeted a staggering 27 percent statewide since the highest cigarette tax in the nation took hold in July, a Post analysis has found…

“That’s what we warned would happen, and obviously it has come to fruition,” said James Calvin, of the New York Association of Convenience Stores.

“Every tax increase drives more smokers to that dark, shadowy, unregulated, unlicensed, untaxed side of the street. The whole policy is self-defeating.”

If the trend continues, the state could fall far short of the $260 million windfall Paterson expected from the 58 percent tax hike.

How do you solve the shortfall? Liberals would tell you the only solution is to raise taxes.

Ballet buff Michael Moore tells Obama to “Take off the pink tutu”

Michael Moore on Barack Obama: “Please take off the pink tutu, because it’s time to put on the boxing gloves and go fighting for the people.”

Michael Moore had a very productive session on Bill Maher’s Friday night HBO show. He more than filled his quota of absurd statements.

This one, for example, directed at President Obama:

“Please take off the pink tutu, because it’s time to put on the boxing gloves and go fighting for the people.”

Michael, Michael, Michael. You, as the master of irony that you are, should recognize the B. Hussein Obama story as a mere retelling of the tale of the scorpion and the fox.

You knew what he was when you elected him.

That tutu is part are parcel of who the man is and always will be. Vladimir Putin knows it. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad knows it. Hugo Chavez knows it. Kim Jong-Il knows it. Felipe Calderón knows it.

We say keep the tutu on. No one really wants to see what’s under it.

Healthcare hypocrisy: “111 company waivers from the health care bill … means that Obamacare is an abject failure.”

Michele Bachmann, Minnesota’s fiery Republican, went after the Obama administration’s healthcare hypocrisy on Monday, pointing out the abject failure of a policy that has already granted 111 waivers.

Michele Bachmann, Minnesota’s fiery Republican, went after the Obama administration’s healthcare hypocrisy on Monday, pointing out the abject failure of a policy that has already granted 111 waivers (list here):

Bachmann: What an abject failure is this government takeover of health care that fully 111 waivers have been issued? What does this mean? This is an admission of failure by the White House. They may not be admitting it, but their actions are admitting it. Why? Because we see universities and unions and favored companies are getting waivers. What’s a waiver? It’s an exemption. Why do they they need an exemption? Obamacare is a cost driving hiker. It’s a failure.

We were told we had to pass Obamacare. We couldn’t wait. We couldn’t even read the bill. We couldn’t take the time to even debate it. Because why? President Obama promised us, he promised that it would drive down the cost of health care. He promised. He promised.

As Joe Biden might say, this can all be explained in one simple three letter word: Liar.

UPDATE: Charlie may not be corrupt, but he’s guilty as sin according to CNN.com. It just reported, “A House ethics subcommittee found Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-New York, guilty Monday on multiple violations of House rules.”

A slap on the wrist to follow.

It took about ten minutes to figure out why the Democrats are suddenly ramrodding Charlie Rangel’s ethics through the House during the lame duck session while they still have a majority. The whole thing is going to be one big ol’ white wash.

(Oh, we beg your pardon. We used the word white. We apologize for the blatant display of racism.)

Politico.com has the sordid, but not unexpected details:

“I see no evidence of corruption,” said Blake Chisam, the top ethics committee lawyer, about Rangel. Chisam’s statement was in response to questioning by Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.). Butterfield is serving on the eight-member panel hearing the Rangel case.

“It’s hard to answer the question of personal financial benefit,” Chisam added. ” I think the short answer is probably no. Do I believe that based on the record that Congressman Rangel took steps to benefit himself based on his position in Congress? No. I believe that the congressman, quite frankly, was overzealous in many of the things he did. And sloppy in his personal finances.”

The most serious allegations against Rangel surround his fundraising on behalf of the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Policy at City College in New York. Rangel sought as much as $30 million in public and private funds for the center, and he was charged for setting dozens of letters on official letterhead to official donors.

Chisam said that Rangel could have avoided any problems “if he had only followed the rules” laid out for such fundraising in the House ethics manual.

Charlie Manson wasn’t a cold-blooded mass murderer. He was just kind of sloppy.

Bernie Madoff wasn’t a swindler. He was just kind of sloppy.

And the Democrats aren’t hushing up this scandal. They’re just kind of sloppy.

Perfect: Charlie Rangel pays his ethics trial attorneys with money he obtained unethically

Rangel tapped his National Leadership PAC for $293,000 to pay his main legal-defense team this year. He took another $100,000 from the PAC in 2009 to pay lawyer Lanny Davis.

You cannot make this stuff up. Oh, you can try, but you cannot make it up.

charlie-rangel
After careful consideration of all the evidence and a quick glance at the guilty look on Rangel's face, we know how we would vote

The New York Post reported:

Congressman Charles Rangel, whose ethics trial starts tomorrow, appears to have improperly used political-action committee money to pay for his defense.

Rangel tapped his National Leadership PAC for $293,000 to pay his main legal-defense team this year. He took another $100,000 from the PAC in 2009 to pay lawyer Lanny Davis.

Two legal experts told The Post such spending is against House rules.
“It’s a breach of congressional ethics,” one campaign-finance lawyer said.
Washington, DC, political lawyer Cleta Mitchell said there is “no authority for a member to use leadership PAC funds as a slush fund to pay for personal or official expenses.”

Leadership PACs are typically used by politicians to donate money to other candidates.

But Rangel seems to have run afoul of House ethics rules. Lawmakers are generally allowed to use campaign cash to pay their lawyers, but this is limited to money in their personal campaign committee and they must ask permission first, the campaign-finance lawyer said.

Far be it from us to rush to judgment in this case, but there’s one piece of evidence screaming that Rangel is guilty:

His attorney is Lanny Davis.

Of course, the trial circus will be held during the lame duck session of Congress while Democrats still hold the majority. You don’t think that will influence the vote, do you?

Nahhhhhh.

Feel good story of the day: “Flag boy” gets an escort on his ride to school

The “flag boy” story continued Monday morning when young Cody Alicea rode his bike to school with an escort — hundreds of patriotic bikers, many of them veterans.

Remember last week’s story about the California boy who was told by his school principal that he could no longer fly the American flag on his bicycle?

The school eventually backed down in the face of public outrage.

But the story continued Monday morning when young Cody Alicea rode his bike to school with an escort – hundreds of patriotic bikers, many of them veterans.

Immigration, terrorists, naked breasts. Ahhh, we knew that would get your attention.

A Danish politician has come up with a novel idea: Show all incoming immigrants images of naked breasts.

In a move designed to (a) reduce the number of Islamic terrorists entering the country, (b) increase the number of other tourists entering the country, or (c) both, a Danish politician has come up with a novel idea:

naked-breasts
Leave it to the Danes to develop the world's most sophisticated terrorist detection system

Show all incoming immigrants images of naked breasts.

Al-Arabiya has the naked truth:

Want to immigrate to Denmark? Then you need to be able to handle to look at a pair of naked women’s breasts, at least if Peter Skaarup, foreign policy spokesman of the far-right Danish People’s party has his way.

According to Skaarup, a documentary film about Denmark that will be shown as part of an upcoming immigration test for foreigners needs to have a pair of breasts in it, to intimidate any extremists from attempting to enter the tiny Scandinavian country.

Because a topless woman on a beach would be a good example of the Danish open-mindedness, Skaarup points out.

This, he said, is mainly relevant for immigrants coming from fundamentalist societies where women are oppressed and are not allowed to display their sexuality or even their hair. On the other hand Danish women are allowed to wear –-or not wear— what they please, underlining that he is not trying to provoke anyone with his statements.

… Integration spokesman for the Conservative Party, one of two government parties, Naser Khader says “a pair of naked breasts is no protection against extremism.”

“It’s quite the opposite, fundamentalists are so obsessed with sex that they will be pouring in over the borders. Maybe we should try with naked pigs,” Khader writes on his page on social networking site Facebook.

He’s kidding. At least we think he’s kidding. But we also think that’s not the worst idea we’ve ever heard.

If either concept is instituted, it will no longer be the terrorists’ dynamite vests that explode, it’ll be their heads. And that’s a much better outcome.

For some unknown reason, James Clyburn, the top ranking black Democrat in the House, seems to be taking the fall for the party’s failure in the midterm elections. How else can you explain his “promotion” from the number two position to the number three position?

Politico.com has the demotion details:

House Democrats have reached a deal to keep both Reps. Steny Hoyer and James Clyburn in the leadership, with Hoyer (D-Md.) serving as minority whip and Clyburn (D-S.C) taking a new, as-yet-still-undefined number three position.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calf.) who is seeking the minority leader’s job in the next Congress, reached an agreement with Clyburn on late Friday night, and Democratic leaders quickly announced the deal.

Clyburn’s title and responsibilities were not specified in the announcement from Pelosi’s office, and Democratic leadership aides scrambled to explain the deal to reporters.

No shit they announced it quickly. They had to do it while Clyburn was still basking in the warm glow of the party’s press release and before he figured out that he’d been screwed.

The best idea from President Obama’s debt commission: Turn U.N. spending into unspending

The United States gives more than $6.3 billion (with a "b") to the United Nations every year

CNSnews.com covers the best idea of the week:

Cutting “voluntary” funding from the United Nations would trim $300 million off the federal deficit by 2015, according to a draft report from the president’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

“According to the Office of Management and Budget, the United States provided over $6.3 billion in taxpayer funds to the United Nations in FY2009. Less than half ($2.7 billion) of that total went to ‘assessed’ dues — payments that the United States is charged for being a member and for its share of peacekeeping operations around the world,” the draft report says.

“The United States is by far the largest donor to the United Nations in terms of assessed dues,” the draft continued. “However, the United States gives the United Nations more than $3.5 billion in ‘voluntary’ funds each year. This option allows the United States to remain a member in good standing of the United Nations by contributing the full dues that will be assessed, but reduces voluntary payments by 10 percent, which will save $300 million per year.”

How about if we cut the “voluntary” payments completely and save the full $3.5 billion? According to our preliminary calculations, that idea is about ten times better than the Debt Commission’s recomendation.

Its readers are ignorant? This is truly a case of "Those who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones."

Forbes.com has the inside info on the ignorance:

The New York Times cultivates an image as the preferred read of the intellectual elite, but at least one of the paper’s higher-ups seems to think its customers aren’t all that bright.

During a panel discussion at the Digital Hollywood New York conference, Gerald Marzorati, the Times’s assistant managing editor for new media and strategic initiatives, explained why the paper’s print business is still robust. “We have north of 800,000 subscribers paying north of $700 a year for home delivery,” Marzorati said. “Of course, they don’t seem to know that.”

As evidence that Times subscribers don’t realize how much a subscription costs, he pointed to what happened when the paper raised its home-delivery price by 5 percent during the recession: Only 0.01 percent of subscribers canceled. “I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they’re literally not understanding what they’re paying,” he said. “That’s the beauty of the credit card.”

Far be it from us to cast aspersions, but considering the New York Times editorial board’s blind adherence to Obama’s economic program, it appears that those geniuses are no smarter with money than their readers are.

Piña coladas for everyone! When the rigorous round of public and private meetings are over, government investigators will discuss their findings poolside.

Members of a key panel created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus bill, have scheduled a meeting on November 22 to consider ways to prevent “fraud, waste, and abuse of Recovery Act funds.” The meeting will be held at the super-luxe Ritz Carlton Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

The group is the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel, a sub-committee of the larger Recovery Accountability and Transparency board (sometimes known as the RAT board). The stimulus bill set up the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel, or RIAP, to make recommendations to identify and prevent waste of the bill’s $814 billion in stimulus spending.

“The purpose of the November 22, 2010 meeting is to allow the RIAP to have an open dialogue, with input from the public, on issues relating to fraud, waste, and abuse of Recovery Act funds,” says a notice in the Federal Register. Specifically, participants in the meeting will discuss various techniques to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse, as well as larger issues of transparency and public awareness. Portions of the meeting will be open to the public, while other parts will be closed.

It doesn’t get much ritzier than the Ritz-Carlton. The Editor was once booted from the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California for attempting to wear jeans…gasp…at dinner.

Not to worry. If that were to happen in this case, we’re confident members of the stimulus waste panel would immediately rush out and purchase new pants on your dime.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton waves goodbye to 150,000,000 of your tax dollars

VOA News has the story:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced new funding to the Palestinian Authority and held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Wednesday, a day before her scheduled meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York.

Clinton said that she and her Egyptian counterpart discussed several issues here in Washington, ranging from Israeli-Palestinian issues to the international tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

“It is important that we do everything we can at a particularly sensitive time in the region to try to redouble our efforts to achieve a two-state solution [to Israeli-Palestinian tensions], to help stabilize the situation in Sudan, and to work to ensure that the people of Lebanon can have accountability in the search for justice,” said Hillary Clinton.

Blah, blah, blah, Hillary. How, exactly, are we going solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? By giving the Palestinians money, of course.

Earlier, Clinton announced that the United States has transferred $150 million in new aid to the Palestinian Authority to help close its budget gap.

“This new funding will help the Palestinian Authority pay down its debt, continue to deliver services and security to its people, and keep the progress going,” she said. “It will support our work together to expand Palestinians’ access to schools, clinics and clean drinking water in both the West Bank and Gaza [Strip].”

The secretary of state said the funds bring U.S. direct budget assistance to the Palestinian Authority to $225 million this year. Overall support and investment to the Palestinians is nearly $600 million for the year.

Got that? It’s not just a cash bonanza for the terrorists, it’s an investment. That is, “the investing of money or capital in order to gain profitable returns.”

Note to the Obama administration: This investment’s going to turn out about as profitably as the one you made in General Motors. Except that General Motors doesn’t want to kill every single one of us.

Domestic terrorist Bill Ayers on his book dedication controversy: “Who are you gonna believe, me or your lyin’ eyes?”

William Ayers, 1960s radical and retired University of Illinois at Chicago professor, said Wednesday any suggestion he dedicated a book to the man who assassinated Robert Kennedy was fiction invented by right-wing bloggers.

Poor Bill Ayers. It’s hard being the nation’s most misunderstood domestic terrorist. When he’s not busy blowing up buildings, plotting the death of 25 million Americans or spending some “personal time” with a well-worn picture of Che, he’s sticking it to the man by whining about the blogosphere.

William Ayers never dedicated a book to Sirhan Sirhan. And he never stepped on the flag, either

Here is what the Chicago Sun-Times had to say.

William Ayers, 1960s radical and retired University of Illinois at Chicago professor, said Wednesday any suggestion he dedicated a book to the man who assassinated Robert Kennedy was fiction invented by right-wing bloggers.

“There’s not a shred of truth in it,” he said.

Wait, there is more:

He said his situation was like being “caught in a Kafkaesque nightmare of trying to explain something that is insane” and that a reporter asking questions about the dedication of a book she has not read was part of the “Alice in Wonderland world we all live in.”

To be fair it has been a while since we’ve read The Trail, but we’re not quite sure that Ayer’s comparison is entirely accurate. There’s nothing very nightmarish about a rich guy spending his sunset years in luxury when he should be spending them in jail. Just as it is not the world that is absurd in a situation in which an avowed extremist expects you to believe his words over ironclad documentation to the contrary.

As far as the reference to Alice in Wonderland, we can’t account for that either. We went to go see that movie starring Stallone and Jet Li instead.

Liberals, especially those on MSNBC, constantly say conservatives are racists. Yet now we have another example of an MSNBC host who can’t tell one black man from another.

Last year, there was the incident where Contessa Brewer couldn’t tell Jesse Jackson from Al Shaprton. And now Chris Matthews has exhibited the same sort of racism (at least that’s what they’d call it if a conservative did it).

The Hardball host got a bit confused. While introducing Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), Matthews called him “Congressman Clyburn,” thinking he was James Clyburn (D-SC).

You know what? We’re going to cut Matthews some slack here and say this wasn’t racism. Instead of thinking all black people look alike, he may just think all Democrats look alike.

While her husband talked trade, Michelle Obama did what most women love to do — shop. The First Lady, who has quite a reputation as a fashionista and is known to send stock prices of clothing companies zooming when she slips into one of their dresses, ran up a bill of thousands on an assortment of Indian handicrafts and textiles.

While visiting the 25 stalls at the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in Pragati Maidan, she even stopped to woefully exclaim, ”I wish I had brought more money!”

The purchases didn’t stop till the purse was empty. In the visit that lasted over two hours, she delighted craftsmen with loads of Christmas shopping.

Everything we know about Democrats we learned on TV

Democrats might be expected to hate this test pattern because it shows an Indian - oh, we beg your pardon - a Native American.

Republicans are vile Neanderthals who live back in the dark ages (more commonly known as the 1950s). And Democrats are modern, enlightened beings who warmly embrace diversity as epitomized by today’s gay community.

At least that’s what Democrats would have you believe.

But this list of favorite TV shows as ranked by members of the two parties puts the lie to that theory.

Accompanying their election coverage on their website, CBS published this photoshopped picture of a half black/half white President Obama with Republicans and Democrats on either side of him as if to say he is split between the two.

Let’s file this under “Tasteless PhotoShop.” Either that or “Holy freakin’ moly, what if Fox News had done it.”

Needless to say Obama’s white side is on the side of the GOP’s John Boehner and Eric Cantor. His black half is on the side of Harry Reid and Charles Schumer. Are they saying that Obama will have to act white with Republicans?

How could anyone think that changing the President’s skin tone like this would be a good idea? This has got to be either one of the most racially insensitive and just plain ol’ stupid photoshops a major news organization has done since Time Magazine blackened OJ Simpson’s face. The idiocy of this is only heightened by the fact that Obama’s heritage is mixed.

Ebony and Ivory sucked when Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder did it as a duet. It’s even worse when Barack Obama does it solo.

Somebody get the smelling salts: MSNBC just admitted Obama is incompetent

Joe Scarborough speaks the unspeakable on MSNBC and admits that senior Democrat senators, committee chairmen even, have personally told him that they think Obama is incompetent.

This one has us a little weak kneed. A little dizzy. A little overwhelmed. We do believe we have the vapors.

Mika, of course, is horrified by this revelation and attempts to shift the subject to a completely unrelated subject.

Joe will have none of it.

The best newspaper correction ever (Hey, wait a second. Are they making fun of us Trekkies?)

Do we detect the slightest little hint of sarcasm in this Australian newspaper’s correction? We hope not, because as everyone knows, the original Star Trek was the greatest program in the history of television.

We’re sorry for claiming Captain Kirk was in command of Captain Picard’s starship

Next thing you know, they'll confuse the Klingons and the Romulans

YESTERDAY, a news.com.au article incorrectly stated that the Star Trek starship USS Enterprise-E, otherwise known as model NNC-1701-E, was the successor to Captain Kirk’s original USS Enterprise. It has since been brought to our attention that the NNC-1701-E in fact came two models after Captain Kirk retired and was under the command of Captain Jean Luc Picard.

Read the original, poorly-researched article here

User “Your Mum’s Lunch” led the charge of those who correctly pointed out that after losing the original Enterprise to the Klingons, Captain Kirk was given the Excelsior Class Enterprise-B as a stop-gap measure until the refit of the Enterprise-A was completed.

Kirk’s last ship was the Ambassador Class Enterprise-C.

Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E were in fact, the first of the Galaxy Class models and were under the command of Captain Picard.

There were also some concerns about whether the incorrect use of the term “hyperspace” in describing warp drive technology may harm the original Star Trek concept, particularly the books.

News.com.au apologises unreservedly for the error.

There was no intention whatsoever to suggest Captain Kirk may have commanded the Galaxy Class Starships Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E.

Any damage to the Star Trek brand incurred by the use of the term “hyperspace” is regretful.

No malice was intended and a correction to the original article will be made.

We also agree that Patrick Stewart is a handsome man, a sentiment expressed by several readers.

Addendum – We’re also sorry for any errors in this apology.

Patrick Stewart handsome? Piffle. We’re pretty sure that alien women prefer Captain Kirk twenty-to-one.
