You hate the media, we hate the media, but Alaska’s Joe Miller really hates the media

Alaska Republican Joe Miller has every right to hate the media. The state’s top TV station was stupid enough to leave a voicemail in which the news director and an unidentified reporter are clearly heard plotting to create last second smears against the Senate candidate.

Alaska Republican Joe Miller has every right to hate the media. The state’s top TV station was stupid enough to leave a voicemail in which the news director and an unidentified reporter are clearly heard plotting to create last second smears against the Senate candidate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftAylfUoogg

Here’s how BigGovernment.com tells the sordid tale:

The following voice mail message was inadvertently left on the cell phone of Joe Miller campaign spokesperson Randy DeSoto.

The voices are believed to be those of the news director for CBS Anchorage affiliate KTVA, along with assignment editor Nick McDermott, and other reporters, openly discussing creating, if not fabricating, two stories about Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, Joe Miller.

… It was later authenticated by McDermott, who sent a text to Randy DeSoto stating, “Damn iPhone… I left you a long message. I thought I hung up. Sorry.”

Clearly the reporters were conspiring to set up some type of smear of Joe Miller. With glee, they even cite a recent controversy over an incident involving the Rand Paul campaign, while discussing how they would spread the story via social media after whatever incident they had in mind came off.

The Miller campaign responded immediately:

Now the media has gone from trying to create stories to openly lying. The audio was pulled directly from the voicemail message. Nothing was altered. “Everything that was recorded on my phone is what we released without change,” said Randy Desoto.

Joe Miller hates the media. Welcome to the club, Joe.

Surprise: U.N. wants to outlaw weapons only the United States possesses

The United Nations wants to outlaw unmanned drones, weapons that only the United States possesses.

Based on the dictates of the United Nations, we may soon revert to jousting. Because apparently they consider hand-to-hand combat the only proper way to resolve a dispute.

drone predator
We always thought the concept of war was to kill as many of their guys as possible while losing as few of your guys as possible. Guess we were wrong.

Reuters has the somehow-not-too-surprising news:

A U.N. investigator called on the world body on Friday to set up a panel to study the ethics and legality of unmanned military weapons — an apparent reference to U.S. drones that strike suspected Islamist militants. In a report to the U.N. General Assembly human rights committee, Christof Heyns said such systems raised “serious concerns that have been almost entirely unexamined by human rights or humanitarian actors.”

“The international community urgently needs to address the legal, political, ethical and moral implications of the development of lethal robotic technologies,” said Heyns, U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions.

It was the second time this year U.N. experts tackled the issue. In June, Heyns’ predecessor, Philip Alston, called for a halt to CIA-directed drone strikes on al Qaeda and Taliban suspects in Afghanistan and Pakistan, saying killings ordered far from the battlefield could lead to a “Playstation” mentality.

A couple thoughts:

First, “a Playstation mentality?” Cool. How about if we call the game “Kill the Friggin’ Muslim Terrorists.” It would sell millions. Use the profits to build more drones.

Second, we didn’t know what the hell a “rapporteur” was, so we looked it up. According to Princeton.edu, a rapporteur is “a recorder appointed by a committee to prepare reports of the meetings.” In other words, a secretary. Nothing against secretaries, but go sit on your boss’s lap and shut the hell up, secretary boy.

Who wants to tell Heath Shuler the problem with his brilliant plan to become Speaker of the House?

Democrat Congressman and former NFL quarterback Heath Shuler says that he may run against Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House.

Uhhh, Heath, pal, we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but that won’t be an issue unless you switch to the Republican party very soon.

heath-shuler
Yeah, Heath, those nasty whacks to the head can come back to haunt you years later

TheHill.com has Shuler’s oddly-timed announcement:

Conservative Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler (N.C.) said Wednesday he might run for Speaker if a “viable alternative” to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) does not emerge.

“If there is no viable alternative [to Pelosi], I will be running for Speaker of the House,” Shuler said during a debate with his Republican foe Jeff Miller on WWNC Radio, the Ashville Citizen-Times reported.

The statement from the second-term congressman, a former college football star who played as a pro with the NFL’s Washington Redskins, is another sign of Pelosi’s unpopularity among centrist and conservative Democrats, many of whom are facing tough reelection contests…

Throughout the campaign, Miller has attempted to tie Shuler to Pelosi, saying he votes with her a vast majority of the time.

Shuler’s comment sparked a testy exchange between the candidates.

“You’re saying you would not vote for Nancy Pelosi for speaker?” Miller said.

“If that’s the alternative, I will be voting for myself,” Shuler replied.

Opponents used to say that Gerald Ford had played too much football without a helmet. It would seem like a fair comment for Miller to make, too.

Relax. It was all done with clever editing and special effects.

But as much as this guy likes to be on TV and considering the rumor that he may actually speak fluent Arabic, they could have saved themselves a lot of time, trouble and money by simply asking Obama to do the commercials.

Democrat leads Pledge in House, omits “under God,” claims she just paused and “took a breath”

Opponents dug up a video clip of the Minnesota Congresswoman leading the Pledge of Allegiance in the House of Representatives. They say she omitted the words “under God.” She says she “took a breath.”

Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCallum is not very happy. She’s also not very honest.

Opponents dug up a video clip of the Minnesota Congresswoman leading the Pledge of Allegiance in the House of Representatives. They say she omitted the words “under God.” She says she “took a breath.”

Here’s a press release posted on McCollum’s on Tuesday:

Congresswoman condemns radical right-wing agenda of hate, intolerance and racism

St. Paul, MN — Congresswoman Betty McCollum honors and respects the Pledge of Allegiance and believes the United States is one Nation under God. She has led the Pledge of Allegiance on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives numerous times as can be seen in these video links.

Conservatives are using an eight year old video clip to incite hate, racism, and intolerance among Tea Party Republicans. This right-wing effort to call into question Congresswoman McCollum’s Christian faith, her belief in God, and her patriotism is blatantly anti-American and all too similar to the extremists who earlier this year mailed a soiled American flag to her Congressional office and threatened the Congresswoman with violence.

Congresswoman McCollum rejects this radical agenda and condemns the extremist tactics behind this poisonous political exploitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

There are three possibilities here:

(1) She took a breath. (2) She intentionally omitted the words “under God.” (3) She doesn’t know the words to the Pledge.

We think it’s probably number three, since she also incorrectly inserted the word “the” in front of “allegiance” at the beginning of Pledge.

And the third possibility is probably the worst of the three.

Gore lets car idle for one hour while he’s inside giving a speech

Intriguingly, the Master of World Climate himself arrived in a rental car (with or without driver is unclear), from the airport, and subsequently left the engine running for the entire lecture.

It’s been several weeks since Al Gore was in the news and he must have read about James Cameron’s global warming hypocrisy and felt jealous.

al gore hypocrisy
"I think I'm getting a canker sore," Gore said. "They're caused by global warming, you know."

ClimateDepot.com has the latest Gore hypocrisy update:

Recently, Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore toured again. Or maybe he does that all the time. This time, he turned up in Gothenburg (Sweden) for the usual alarmist talk. In advance, all distinguished guests were politely advised to – if possible – use any form of public transportation to go to the event, in order to minimize CO2 emissions.

Intriguingly, the Master of World Climate himself arrived in a rental car (with or without driver is unclear), from the airport, and subsequently left the engine running for the entire lecture. That is to say, about one hour. Incidentally, local legislation prohibits – for very good environmental reasons, i e pollution – any car engine running on empty for more than 60 seconds. Fines are severe. As far as I know, he was not fined.

Ahhhh, but if you thought Gore’s global warming hypocrisy was done for the day, you’d be wrong. He was just getting warmed up, so to speak.

After the ceremony in the Norwegian capital Oslo, it is customary that the laureate is invited to the Swedish capital Stockholm, for a cordial visit. The train ride, supposedly the environmental choice according to Mr. Gore, is approximately four hours. However, he opted for the cosier ride with one of the Swedish government aircrafts. As these can, according to the rules, only be used when a cabinet member is on board – and as the Swedish government after a short ceremonial visit – offered to fly him to Frankfurt (Germany) for his flight to the US, you can calculate both the manpower and the fuel used for this grand tour against man’s destruction of the planet.

Take that, James Cameron. Al Gore is still the king of global warming hypocrisy.

20 Questions: An interview with Teri Davis Newman, our favorite Congressional candidate

Teri Davis Newman is the Republican nominee for Congress in Illinois-12. She’s running against fat-and-happy, 12-term incumbent Democrat Jerry Costello, who hasn’t had a real challenge in god knows how long.

We love Teri Davis Newman. She’s been reading IHateTheMedia.com and leaving pithy comments since about day three.

Teri Newman
That's the Honorable Congressperson Teri Davis Newman to you

She’s smart, spunky, and not afraid to say what needs to be said even if it’s not the “smart” thing to say. For some unknown reason, she agreed to do IHateTheMedia.com’s first congressional candidate interview.

As you might expect, her answers are better than our questions.

1. If you were a witch, would you be Glenda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz, Samantha from Bewitched or Nancy Pelosi?

Nancy Pelosi isn’t qualified to be a witch. The only magic she’s ever performed is convincing the people of California-8 that she’s not a psychotic Botox-addicted knuckle-dragging vodka-swilling spotted owl-loving liberal. The rest of the country knows better.

2. On gay marriage, would you vote as a typical conservative and be against it, or would you be in favor of it because as a wedding planner it could increase your income?

I’m not one to sell my integrity for money.

3. You can invite any three people – living or dead- to dinner. How do you split the bill and under whose name is the reservation made?

I’ll make the reservation and pay the bill. They’re dead so it’s a cheap date.

4. Beatles or Stones? PC or Mac? Ninja or pirate? Hayak or Keynes?

Stones, PC, Ninja, Hayek

5. Celebrated movie The Graduate is left famously unresolved. In your estimation what happened to characters Benjamin and Elaine after they departed from the bus?

They get married, have 2.3 children. Subsequently they divorce and Elaine takes half of the money he made in “plastic.” Sadly, Benjamin is killed in a prison riot where he was doing time for insider trading.

Proof that Republicans aren't afraid to go out in the rain

TheHill.com has the inclement information:

In more bad news for Democrats, rain is in the forecast for much of the country on Election Day.

Weather tracking websites, including weather.com and The Old Farmer’s Almanac, are calling for rain in the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast regions, with chances for precipitation in other parts of the country as well.

According to Laurel Harbridge, a Northwestern University political science professor, said GOP voters are not typically discouraged by rain. “Republicans are helped by bad weather…it does harm Democratic prospects.”

Wendy Schiller, a political science professor at Brown University, echoed Harbridge. “Bad weather almost always hurts Democrats,” she said. “The traditional Democratic base tends to include lower income people and the elderly. Both of those demographic groups have a hard time getting to the polls.”

Nonsense. Of course, Democrats are capable of voting in the rain. But sometimes, when it gets really wet, they only vote once.

Fox News reports:

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday granted the Obama administration’s request for a temporary freeze of a California-based federal judge’s order telling the military to stop enforcing the policy…

Government lawyers sought to suspend the ruling while appeals were pending, arguing that it would pose a major problem for the military. They said it could encourage service members to reveal their sexual orientation before the issue is fully decided.

Seriously. The photo makes this whole story worthwhile, doesn’t it.

Keep your fingers crossed. Maybe a recent caller to Al Sharpton’s radio show is a sign of things to come.

The Radio Equalizer has the audio:

Caller: Reverend Al, I’ve been following you since the eighties ever since Tawana Brawley. Brother, you’ve had a place in my heart that is special.

But I’m from Chicago and the Democrats here can’t stand on their record, Reverend Al. That’s why the people are not coming out to vote, because they’ve been abused and misused. And I would just like to end with this that the Democratic Party has controlled the state government for at least ten or fifteen years.

The Democratic Party has controlled Chicago for at least 50 years and the blacks in Chicago and the blacks in the State of Illinois are worse off here, Reverend Al. You should come to Chicago so that you can see how bad they treat the people and now you gonna ask the people that you’ve been beaten down smacked up for ten or fifteen years to vote for me?

I’m not that ignorant, Reverend Al. I’m not going to keep expecting different results doing the same thing. Love you, brother. Out of here.

We assume this audio was cut off just before Reverend Al said, “Ah, crap. Looks like my scam is starting to unravel.”

The latest phony CBS/New York Times poll shows Republicans favored by only 6%

Pity CBS and the New York Times. They can see the Republican tidal wave coming, but their liberal bias is so strong that they can’t bring themselves to admit the size of what they see.

Pity CBS and the New York Times. They can see the Republican tidal wave coming, but their liberal bias is so strong that they can’t bring themselves to admit the size of what they see.

Take the results of the latest CBS/New York Times poll, for example:

black-people
CBS and the New York Times love black people 77% more than the U.S. Census Bureau does

With the midterm elections less than a week away, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds that Republicans continue to hold an advantage over Democrats in the generic House ballot. Forty-six percent of likely voters say they plan to vote Republican, while 40 percent say they will vote Democrat.

Americans are divided in their views of the job President Obama is doing: 45% approve, while 47% disapprove.

If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the poll, however, you’ll find the following paragraph:

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,173 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 22-26, 2010. An oversample of African Americans was interviewed, for a total of 273 interviews with African Americans.

What this means is that CBS and the New York Times have stacked the deck in this poll two different ways. And both of them lessen the impact of the aforementioned tidal wave.

First, they oversampled blacks, who are not just predominantly Democrat, but overwhelmingly Democrat. Blacks are approximately 13% of the population, yet in this poll they account for 23% of the respondents.

Obama’s not on the ballot and it is widely expected that black turn-out will decrease in this election, not increase. So what rationale could possibly justify oversampling by 77% (10/13) an ethnic group that voted 95% Democrat in the last election?

Based on this, we assume somewhere around 170% of blacks will vote Democrat in this election. Of course, this will necessarily require a major “get out the vote” effort in cemeteries across the country, but those are traditional Democrat strongholds.

Second, self-identified party breakdown (weighted) in this poll shows 28% Republicans, 38% Democrats and 45% Independents. Do CBS and the New York Times really think Democrats outnumber Republicans by 35% (10/28) in a year when Republicans are expected to dominate the balloting? For god’s sake, man, Obama only won by 7% in in 2008 in what was widely considered a runaway election.

To show just how distorted these figures are, on the same day this CBS/New York Times poll was released, Gallup released a poll on the composition of likely 2010 voters. It shows 55% Republican/Lean Republican, 40% Democrat/Lean Democrat and 4% Independent.

Of course, it’s always possible that Gallup oversampled racist, sexist, homophobic conservatives. But we doubt it.

Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, Va., was arrested today by the FBI and charged with providing material support to terrorists and collecting information for a terrorist attack. “It’s chilling that a man from Ashburn is accused of casing rail stations with the goal of killing as many Metro riders as possible through simultaneous bomb attacks,” said Neil MacBride, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “Today’s arrest highlights … our ability to find those seeking to harm U.S. citizens and neutralize them before they can act.”

Joe “Don’t Know Much About History” Biden credits the government for all things good

Joe Biden: “Every single great idea that has marked the 21st century, the 20th century and the 19th century has required government vision and government incentive.”

Speaking at fundraiser for in Manhattan on Tuesday, Joe Biden played a little fast and loose with history. But knowing Biden, he was just making crap up as he went along.

golden-spike
The two railroads met at Promontory Point, Utah. Joe Biden was unable to attend.

The New York Daily News has the details:

“Every single great idea that has marked the 21st century, the 20th century and the 19th century has required government vision and government incentive,” he said. “In the middle of the Civil War you had a guy named Lincoln paying people $16,000 for every 40 miles of track they laid across the continental United States. … No private enterprise would have done that for another 35 years.”

The fact that every word Biden said is either oversimplified, misleading or incorrect tends to weaken his argument about the importance of government intervention. But this is, after all, Joe Biden, so let’s not let the truth interfere with a good story.

Fact is, the transcontinental railroad wasn’t built because of government vision. The term “government vision” is an oxymoron. The concept of a transcontinental railroad had been proposed and pushed by private citizens and private companies for decades. It’s a little known fact of history that Abraham Lincoln represented several major railroads and those with interests in the railroads long before he ever ran for office. It’s been suggested that he was owned – lock, stock and barrel – by he railroads. He continued to represent their interests as long as he was in office.

Enthusiasm runs high for Democrats this year

WLS-AM has the yawn-inducing details:

Former President Bill Clinton’s ‘get out the vote’ rally for Democrats at a downtown Chicago hotel was the most unenthusiastic WLS veteran political reporter Bill Cameron has ever witnessed.

Clinton was an hour late for the Tuesday afternoon rally at the Palmer House and droned on for another hour, sending dozens of the few hundred Democrats in attendance for the exits.

“Well, all we’re really asking for is two more years, that’s a total of four, to get us out of the hole and get us into the future. That’s half as much time as you gave them to dig the hole. Seems fair to us,” Clinton said.

The state’s most popular Democrat Lisa Madigan was conspicuously absent as were state party chairman Mike Madigan and Mayor Richard Daley.

Madigan and Daley were just the beginning. By the end of the speech most of the audience was also conspicuously absent.
