Take the results of the latest CBS/New York Times poll, for example:

With the midterm elections less than a week away, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds that Republicans continue to hold an advantage over Democrats in the generic House ballot. Forty-six percent of likely voters say they plan to vote Republican, while 40 percent say they will vote Democrat.
Americans are divided in their views of the job President Obama is doing: 45% approve, while 47% disapprove.
If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the poll, however, you’ll find the following paragraph:
This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,173 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 22-26, 2010. An oversample of African Americans was interviewed, for a total of 273 interviews with African Americans.
What this means is that CBS and the New York Times have stacked the deck in this poll two different ways. And both of them lessen the impact of the aforementioned tidal wave.
First, they oversampled blacks, who are not just predominantly Democrat, but overwhelmingly Democrat. Blacks are approximately 13% of the population, yet in this poll they account for 23% of the respondents.
Obama’s not on the ballot and it is widely expected that black turn-out will decrease in this election, not increase. So what rationale could possibly justify oversampling by 77% (10/13) an ethnic group that voted 95% Democrat in the last election?
Based on this, we assume somewhere around 170% of blacks will vote Democrat in this election. Of course, this will necessarily require a major “get out the vote” effort in cemeteries across the country, but those are traditional Democrat strongholds.
Second, self-identified party breakdown (weighted) in this poll shows 28% Republicans, 38% Democrats and 45% Independents. Do CBS and the New York Times really think Democrats outnumber Republicans by 35% (10/28) in a year when Republicans are expected to dominate the balloting? For god’s sake, man, Obama only won by 7% in in 2008 in what was widely considered a runaway election.
To show just how distorted these figures are, on the same day this CBS/New York Times poll was released, Gallup released a poll on the composition of likely 2010 voters. It shows 55% Republican/Lean Republican, 40% Democrat/Lean Democrat and 4% Independent.
Of course, it’s always possible that Gallup oversampled racist, sexist, homophobic conservatives. But we doubt it.

The network newscast ratings for last week are in and “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric” tied its all-time low in total viewers with an average of 4.89 million tuning in during the five days.
The low was set last June, when ABC also hit its own low. (Ratings records date back to the 1991-’92 season.) Last week, NBC averaged 7.42 million total viewers and ABC averaged 6.51 million.
Erica Hill filled in on Tuesday and Harry Smith was in Wednesday. Couric anchored from New York Monday and from Afghanistan on Thursday and Friday.
Long gone are the days when news anchors went to war zones to improve their ratings. War zones are apparently safer than news rooms on the day the ratings come out.

At the beginning of his report, Fabian says, “J. T. Ready is the leader of tonight’s group. He is also a member of the National Socialist movement, a group that some experts call a neo-Nazi organization that believes in a white separatist state.”
Unfortunately, Fabian never identifies these “experts” nor the source of their information. He never quizzes Ready about his neo-Nazi beliefs. And he never disputes Ready’s assertion that his group is looking for drug smugglers and illegal aliens because the federal government won’t.
Ahhh, but Fabian does mention that this armed band of neo-Nazis actually found a few illegal aliens during their patrol and reports on the brutal treatment they suffered at the hands of the evil Aryans. They were “given water and turned over to authorities.” No beatings. No ovens. No nothin’.
Later, toward the end of the report, Fabian says, “Citizen patrols like this one, led by an alleged neo-Nazi organization, worry local law enforcement.”
Again, no evidence is presented to support the assertion that Ready is a neo-Nazi. He may well be. We don’t know. There are certainly thousands of online references that say he is. But wouldn’t that have been an interesting line of questioning for Fabian to follow?
But what do we know about such things. No one’s ever called us the Tiffany of blogs.

In numbers released today, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams lost -440,000 viewers (-140k in A25-54 demo) compared to Q2 2009. ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer lost -260,000 viewers (-80k demo) (Charlie Gibson was anchor in 2009). The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric lost the most, based on a percentage, losing -340,000 viewers (30k demo) compared to Q2 2009. ABC and CBS were also down when Q2 2008 is compared to Q2 2009.

There’s nothing funnier than actually looking at the “internals” of liberal polls. Because they often reveal truths the summaries gloss over.
For example, here’s what the summary of the latest CBS/New York Times says:

It continued:

Now here’s what the summary didn’t tell you. Look deeper into the poll at the demographic breakdown of who was actually questioned and you quickly see how skewed the results are. Who participated in the poll?

30% Independents
Say what? 69.6% more Democrats than Republicans? President Obama only got 53% of the vote. In the recent House election in upstate New York a Democrat only got 50% of the vote in a Democrat district.
So how about if you make this closing paragraph the new opening paragraph of the New York Times/CBS poll summary:
“The latest fraudulent CBS/New York Times poll kept questioning Democrats until we got the answers to line up with the story we had already written. Here are the results of that bogus poll.”
President Obama appeared on “60 Minutes” last night and giggled like an inebriated schoolgirl throughout a discussion of the perilous condition of the world’s economy.
It was so odd, so distracting, so bizarre, that Steve Kroft finally asked what may be the the most unusual question ever asked a sitting President.
“You’re sitting here,” Kroft said, “and you’re, you’re laughing. You’re laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money.’ How do you deal with — I mean, explain. Are you punch drunk?”
That’s what Kroft asked. But we suspect that what he really wondered was, “How many days were you in office before you realized you were way in over your head?”
Sarah Palin documentarian John Ziegler stopped by the Today Show last week just long enough to figuratively whack Matt Lauer up the side of the head.
In the mental equivalent of a wrestling “Death Match,” Ziegler pinned the host to the mat in record time. Lauer was forced to admit that the portrait the media had painted of the Alaska governor as an “idiot” was “a lie.”
“I don’t think that everybody in the media ran out saying, ‘Sarah Palin is an idiot,’” Lauer protested. ”Nevertheless, Ziegler eventually wheedled a confession out of Lauer and promote his new film ‘Media Malpractice.'”
“Wait a minute,” Ziegler answered, “I urge people and I urge you, Matt, because you’ve been up to Wasilla. You know Sarah Palin. You know that this is a lie that she’s some sort of an idiot or a moron.”
Lauer resisted, but eventually submitted and admitted that the portrait the media painted of Palin didn’t exactly match reality.
Now we want to see Ziegler take the same approach and grill Lauer about news nymphet and former Today Show host Katie Couric.
We suspect he would be much quicker to agree that she’s an idiot.
This morning he went on the CBS Early Show to hype Obama’s “stimulus” program and the new government website that lets us track how our money is being spent (or China’s money, as the case may be).
Unfortunately for poor ol’ Joe, he had to admit he didn’t know what the website is. In fact, he didn’t appear to know what the internet is.
“You know, I’m embarrassed,” a flustered Biden admitted. (Looking for help off camera) “Do you know the website number? I should have it in front of me and I don’t. I’m actually embarrassed. (after receiving the information from off camera) Excuse me. It’s recovery.gov. Recovery.gov.”
What’s the website number? We just called information. It’s 1-800-BONEHEAD.
