40 die in a Chinese hi-speed train wreck. Instead of sending doctors, government sends media instructions.

“Do not report the accident too frequently. Report moving stories about people donating blood or taxi drivers not taking fares from victims. Do not investigate the cause of the accident.”

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman is an unabashed fanboy of the Chinese government and their hi-speed trains. He writes column after column extolling the genius of the first and the efficiency of the latter.

Should the liberal lunatic stumble upon IHateTheMedia.com, we would suggest that he skip this story.

Anyone know the Mandarin word for "Oops"?

The Telegraph UK has the details:

Chinese officials have instructed the media not to sensationalise the accident, and fresh instructions sent to reporters yesterday said: “Do not report the accident too frequently. Report moving stories about people donating blood or taxi drivers not taking fares from victims. Do not investigate the cause of the accident.”

The instructions added: “The name of the Wenzhou accident will be ‘The 23 July Wenzhou Line Railway Accident’. From now on, use the headline: ‘Great Love in the Face of Great Tragedy’. On television, provide the relevant information, but be careful of the music used.”

Great idea. From now on we will not use the term “debt ceiling fiasco.” Instead we will call it “Great Love in the Face of Great Stupidity.”

Losing the future: Chinese “miracle” mostly smoke and mirrors

The Chinese government spends wildly, produces shoddy products while cronies and pols make out like the bandits they are. Not much different from our model after all.

US political-class types like Barack Obama and New York Times China apologist Tom Friedman think the Chinese model of crony capitalism and central planning is just dandy. They envy how the ex-commies can uproot millions and spend billions at the drop of a bayonet, certain that emulating the Chicom model can dig us out of Obama’s holes.

china-bullet-train-crash
Crash and burn: Are we talking about the bullet train or the Chinese economy?

Critics like Ying Ma think that’s a crock. As an example, she derails Casey Joe Biden’s high speed train fantasy:

Westerners have consistently pointed to the rapid construction of China’s high-speed rail system, now the most extensive in the world, as Exhibit A of China’s infrastructure prowess.

…going high-speed in China has highlighted endemic corruption and created unhappy customers. In February, Liu Zhijun, China’s minister of railways and architect of the country’s $300 billion high-speed rail network, was fired and arrested amid accusations of wheeling and dealing in bribes of $155 million — and keeping 18 mistresses.

…concerns about shoddy construction and safety have surfaced.

China’s state media once trumpeted the trains’ top speed of 210-236 mph as the fastest in the world, but the trains were never designed to run above 186 mph. … Caxin.com … reports that the “high-speed bubble” was all a “naked, systemic lie,” concocted and fanned by the Railways Ministry.

…most Chinese citizens cannot afford to ride the shiny new trains and have opted instead to pack into buses for their long-distance travel.

The Chinese government spends wildly, produces shoddy products while cronies and pols make out like the bandits they are. Not much different from our model after all.

Oops! Brand spankin’ new Chinese highway falls apart after two days. Thomas Friedman hardest hit.

One of the China’s newest “glory projects” turned into a “glory hole” two days after it was opened.

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman constantly praises all things Chinese – their economy, their political system, their remarkable achievements, everything.

Unfortunately, one of the nation’s newest “glory projects” turned into a “glory hole” two days after it was opened.

chinese-xinsan-motorway
When China's new Xinsan Motorway collapsed it took this Chinese pick-up truck along for the ride

The Telegraph UK tells the tale of the road to ruin:

A Chinese motorway has collapsed just two days after it opened, causing the deaths of two people, after builders were ordered to rush the project so it could be unveiled for the 90th birthday of the Communist party.

The 57-mile-long Xinsan motorway, through the mountains of Yunnan, was supposed to be a perfect example of how the Communist party has rolled out pristine infrastructure to even the most remote areas of China, creating economic prosperity.

Despite warnings from the construction team in charge of the project, it was included in the list of “glory projects” to be unveiled for the party’s 90th anniversary on July 1.

Huge banners were slung on the cliffs above the road, reminding its builders: “Work hard, work quickly, we have 60 days left”.

But how could this be? The problems with this highway are surely an anomaly, because we all know that the Chinese record of success is unmatched anywhere in the world today.

The motorway is only one of a number of major projects which were rushed through to meet the deadline.

The 820-mile Beijing-to-Shanghai high-speed railway, open to the public for only eleven days, yesterday (SUN) saw trains stalled for two hours after an electrical failure.

Back in the 1980s Hedrick Smith, Moscow Bureau Chief for the New York Times, who lived in the Soviet Union for many years, wrote a best-selling book called The Russians.

The basic premise of the book was that the whole Soviet success was a sham and that despite outward appearances it was a nation destined to fail. Everything was shoddily manufactured and fell apart almost as soon as it rolled off the assembly line. He extended that line of thinking to the USSR’s military and space program and theorized that the West had very little reason to fear this corrupt communist cabal.

In other words, no matter what your read and no matter what you hear, nothing in Communist countries is as advertised by the Western media.

Perhaps Thomas Friedman should pick up a copy of The Russians.

Back to the Future Present: China bans time travel on television

This may be the oddest story of the day. China’s version of the FCC, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, has banned time travel.

This may be the oddest story of the day. China’s version of the FCC, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, has banned time travel. Mustn’t give anyone the idea that they can change the future, you know.

CNN.com reports:

New guidelines issued on March 31 discourage plot lines that contain elements of “fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots, absurd techniques, even propagating feudal superstitions, fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons, and a lack of positive thinking.”

“The government says … TV dramas shouldn’t have characters that travel back in time and rewrite history. They say this goes against Chinese heritage,” reports CNN’s Eunice Yoon. “They also say that myth, superstitions and reincarnation are all questionable.”

The Chinese censors seem to be especially sensitive these days. But for the television and film industry, such strictures would seem to eliminate any Chinese version of “Star Trek,” “The X-Files,” “Quantum Leap” or “Dr. Who.” And does that mean rebroadcast of huge Hollywood moneymakers like “Back to the Future” and the “Terminator” series are now forbidden?

The Obama administration isn’t worried about time travel. No, they’re looking at the polls and simply wishing they could rewrite the present.

If you could travel back in time, where and when would be your destination? And why?

Here are a few of The Donald’s subtle thoughts:

“He’s toying with Obama and he doesn’t respect him. I have many Chinese friends and they cannot believe what they’re getting away with. He’s just playing with Obama.”

“These are not our friends. They’re looking to destroy our country.”

“They’re having a big beautiful dinner right now in Washington. I don’t believe in holding dinners for the enemy. I don’t believe in holding dinners for people that take advantage of you and laugh at you and your stupidity behind your backs.

Frightening evidence of China’s looming economic bubble: The ghost mall

A couple weeks ago the internet was abuzz about photos of entirely empty Chinese cites the government had built just to prop up the appearance of a rapidly growing economy. Now here’s more evidence – the New South China Mall in Dongguan, which has been empty for six years.

Some experts say the economic bubble in China is going to make ours look like a mere hiccup.

A couple weeks ago the internet was abuzz about photos of entirely empty Chinese cites the government had built just to prop up the appearance of a rapidly growing economy. Now here’s more evidence – the New South China Mall in Dongguan, which has been empty for six years.

DailyReckoning.com has the depressing details:

Once heralded as “the largest mall in the world, bustling with customers,” the mall is now overwhelmingly desolate, just “floor upon floor of emptiness.” This is even on a Saturday, and even with a fully-operational theme park. The best way to boost foot traffic? Expand another 200,000 square meters, according to the mall’s owners. They plan for the development to ultimately reach over one million square meters of residential and retail space.

It’s already been about six years since the nearly-vacant mall opened … things are bound to turn around any day now.

Hedge-fund manager Jim Chanos, who foretold the collapse of Enron, says that China is on a “treadmill to hell” because it’s relied on real estate development to underpin its economic growth.

We read last week that China is bailing out the collapsed economies in Europe. So who bails out China when its economy collapses?

Anyone know how to say “never mind” in Korean?

UKPA has the hilarious details:

A 13-year-old American boy campaigning to turn the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea into a peace park was taken away by Chinese police after staging a brief protest near Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Jonathan Lee unfurled a sign saying “Peace treaty” and “Nuclear- free DMZ children’s peace forest” as he stood outside the Forbidden City.

A man believed to be a plain-clothes officer grabbed the teenager’s sign less than a minute later and waved away journalists who had been contacted by the boy’s family ahead of the event.

Jonathan and his mother, from Ridgeland, Mississippi, were then escorted away by police.

Jonathan made a rare visit to Pyongyang in August to propose his idea of a “children’s peace forest” in the demilitarised zone.

If these morons are lucky, the Chinese will put them in a re-education camp where they’ll be assigned the noble task of beating plowshares into intercontinental missiles.

The Telegraph UK has the scantily-clad details:

Organisers of the games in China have hired four cheerleader squads, each made up of eight girls, to entertain fans during breaks in the volleyball action, according to the Tianfu Morning News.

But Yemen beach volleyballer Adeeb Mahfoudh has now accused the squads of being distracting, and partly to blame for their defeat to Indonesia.

“They had an effect on how we played,” he said. “I think they had something to do with our losing the match.

Besides cheering, the girls also perform routines that include traditional Chinese elements including martial arts and fan dancing.

“These girls are very beautiful. With them here, more people will pay attention to beach volleyball,” Mr Mahfoudh added.

“If I can, I hope to watch them perform at the next match.”

This is a huge advance in international relations. As far as we can recall, it’s the first time any Arab loss wasn’t blamed on the Jews or George Bush.

One such thinker is David Murrin, CIO of Emergent Asset Management and author of Breaking the Code of History, who outlined the currently unfolding scenario to CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe. He contends that the course Obama has put America on with Obamacare reminds him of the dismantling of the British empire after World War II, when the nation created their National Health Service, which ensures universal health coverage in Britain. But the Obama Administration is not only setting us on this path with his social policy, he is also appeasing our enemies around the world.

Shocker: Authoritarian Chinese government complains that IPCC censors are too authoritarian

“Amid controversy surrounding the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on melting glaciers, Xie Zhenhua, Vice-Chairman of China’s National Development and Reform Commission, today urged the UN panel to make the fifth assessment report comprehensive by also citing contrarian views.”

Call this one another nail in the coffin of global warming. The Chinese government, never known for endorsing open communication, has called on the UN’s IPCC to show more tolerance for dissent.

Business Standard reports the duplicitious details:

Ahhh, the poetry of the Chinese language. Hell, here in America, we’d just say I hate the media. And here’s another reason why.

Newsweek, that venerable publication devoted to defending traditonal American ideals (In English, that’s what’s known as a joke. In Chinese, it’s 笑话)…anyway, Newsweek recently published an article entitled “Why China and the U.S. Will Only Get Closer.”

Please allow us to summarize the article: Blah, blah, blah, China’s cool now and the US isn’t blah, blah, blah.

The comrade journalist who wrote the article says, “Having grown accustomed to dominance, many Americans now find China’s boom unsettling. After all, two states like this are historically expected to clash.”

But the article says this need not necessarily be our fate. “China need not become an adversary.” How can we avoid it, Newsweek? How? Simple. “Americans must come to terms with the reality that their own vaunted democratic system has often failed them.”

The article ends by revealing the reason the United States and China must become closer. It’s climate change. Of course. We should have known that Newsweek would somehow pin the future of democracy to the global warming scam.

President Obama dispatched little Timmy Geithner to China to calm the frayed nerves of the Chinese government. It holds $8901.5 billion in U.S. Treasury debt, more than any other nation, and they’re worried that our skyrocketing deficit will trigger massive inflation and/or devastate the dollar. Either scenario is bad news for their investments.

“We sincerely hope the U.S. fiscal deficit will be reduced, year after year,” Assistant Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao said.

“The Chinese government is a responsible government and first and foremost our responsibility is the Chinese people,” he continued, “so of course we are concerned about the security of the Chinese assets.”

Geithner reassured them by saying, “Where can a guy find some good mu shu pork around here?”

The truth about Obama’s G8 global warming pact: It’s non-binding, India and China won’t sign it, Russia ignores it

President Obama’s G8 Global Warming Pact is non-binding. Got that? It’s non-binding. So non-binding, in fact, that Russia, which actually signed the treaty, has already said it has no intention of abiding by it.

Attendees at the recent G8 meetings in L'Aquila, Italy dined on polar bear tartare
Attendees at the recent G8 meetings in L'Aquila, Italy dined on polar bear tartare

This week, the global warming circus raised its tent at the G8 meetings in L’Aquila, Italy. According to the media, the world’s wisest leaders have saved the world by signing a new global warming pact.

Luckily, ABC News’ Jake Tapper cut through the crap and revealed a side of the story that’s absent from most reports and buried in others:

“The climate change provision sets a non-binding goal for a 50% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050, using 1990 levels or later years as a base, with a goal for developed countries of 80%. The document pledges cooperation to limit the rise in global temperatures to no more than 2 degrees Celsius or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit.”

“But achieving this is far more difficult than writing it on a piece of paper as a pledge, particularly with developing nations balking at the goal and complaining that the industrialized world hasn’t followed through with aid and technology to help them reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Got that? It’s non-binding. So non-binding, in fact, that Russia, which actually signed the treaty, has already said it has no intention of abiding by it.

Arkady Dvorkovich, the top economic advisor to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said, “For us the 80 per cent figure is unacceptable and likely unattainable. We won’t sacrifice economic growth for the sake of emission reduction.”

He might as well have been speaking for India and China who aren’t G8 members and who have already said, “Thanks, but no thanks. We’re with Russia on this one.”

So on one hand, the solution to global warming was all smoke and mirrors. On the other hand, the leaders of the G8 did manage to have some very nice dinners and treated their bloated staffs to very nice Italian vacations.

Revenge for the Opium Wars: China treats the U.S. like a drug dealer teasing a pathetic junkie

Todd Stern, President Barack Obama’s special envoy on climate change, tried to sound optimistic when the US delegation ended its China visit but could hardly conceal that little had been achieved

Sad to say, that's us, squatting in some squalid alley getting our daily fix of Chinese money.
Sad to say, that's us, squatting in some squalid alley getting our daily fix of Chinese money.

The Obama administration just concluded climate negotiations with China. No breakthroughs were achieved, but at least both nations now understand their respective roles:

China is the drug dealer, America is the junkie. They have the really good stuff we want: money. Just like any good drug dealer, they got us hooked with cheap prices, but now that we’re addicted the price they demand is going up.

Here’s how the Financial Times reports the results of the Obama administration’s recent climate negotiations with China:

Todd Stern, President Barack Obama’s special envoy on climate change, tried to sound optimistic when the US delegation ended its China visit but could hardly conceal that little had been achieved…

Chinese officials maintained that the two countries should have a “common but differentiated approach” – code for Beijing’s reluctance to adopt a formal domestic mandate to reduce its carbon emissions. The US Congress is considering a bill that would reduce US emissions to 83 per cent of 2005 levels by 2020. China wants the US to cut its emissions to 40 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 – a different order of magnitude. It also wants the US to pledge up to 1 per cent of its gross domestic product to pay for clean technology in China and elsewhere.

Read that again. The Chinese want us to cripple American industry with carbon emission regulations from which they’ll be exempt. Then they want us to pay them 1% of our GDP to give the latest technology to their industries.

Sadly enough, we’ll probably do it because we’re addicted to their money. And like any good junkie, we’ll steal to feed our habit. Unfortunately, we’re stealing from our children and grandchildren.

“I do see this opportunity for climate change to be … a game-changer,” she declared. “It’s a place where human rights — looking out for the needs of the poor in terms of climate change and healthy environment — are a human right.”

Bad news for American workers and taxpayers. That auto bailout isn’t quite working the way they hoped it would.

According to a leaked document, GM plans to sell Chinese-manufactured cars to American consumers as soon as 2011.

Here’s how Fox News reports it:

General Motors is currently the best-selling foreign automaker in China, and Buick is number one brand overall, part of the reason that the nameplate was saved during a recent round of cuts that included the elimination of Pontiac. As an example of the growing influence of that marketplace on the company, the interior of the upcoming replacement for the Buick LaCrosse sedan was designed at a GM studio in Shanghai.

According to the report, GM plans to sell nearly 18,000 Chinese-made vehicles in the US in 2011, with that number rising to over 50,000 by 2014.

The chart above shows exactly what a circle jerk this is.

China buys US government debt. The US government uses that money to bailout General Motors. General Motors manufactures cars in China which it then sells in the United States. Americans buy those cars which gives GM the money to pay back the government which then pays back China.

The end result: The Chinese get the jobs. The Chinese get the money. And the only thing Americans get is the shaft.

This is one of those stories that’s so friggin’ unbelievable that our initial inclination was to think it was a joke.

Unfortunately, the joke’s on us.

Here’s how CNSNews.com reports it:

“The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health, will pay $2.6 million in U.S. tax dollars to train Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly on the job. ‘The purpose of the project is to try and develop an intervention program targeting HIV risk and alcohol use,’ Dr. Xiaoming Li, the researcher conducting the program, told CNSNews.com. The grant, made last November, is one of several ‘international initiatives’ sponsored by NIH.”

If cigarettes are as bad as the government says, if they cause so much disease, so many deaths, so much pain, why doesn’t the government just outlaw them?

We all know the answer to that, don’t we? State and federal governments are addicted to the sales taxes that cigarettes generate. Without those tobacco taxes, they couldn’t keep building their house of cards.

At least the Chinese government is honest about it. Here’s how the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports it:

Officials in a county in central China have been told to smoke nearly a quarter of a million packs of locally made cigarettes annually or risk being fined, state media reports…

Departments that fail to meet their targets will be fined, the report said.

Ted Turner still an idiot, thinks forced abortions are a good idea

We would have said forced abortions fall into the “draconian” category, but it looks like we were wrong.

Turner quickly admitted that he didn’t know what he was talking about, which is something we’ve been waiting to hear for nearly 30 years.

Talk about wanting to be a fly on the wall. Wouldn’t you have loved to listen in on the dinner conversations Turner had with Jane Fonda when they were married?
