That’s all, folks: MSNBC, CNN beaten by Cartoon Network in ratings

The Cartoon Network was ranked #13, above MSNBC and CNN, despite the fact that MSNBC and CNN’s programming is much funnier.

This report from MediaBistro.com may explain why Keith Olbermann seems to be doing a Yosemite Sam impression every night.

“In total Viewers, Fox News was the #2 ranked cable network last week in primetime, averaging 233,000 viewers behind USA. MSNBC was #26, CNN was #32, and HLN was #37.”

The Cartoon Network was #13, despite the fact that MSNBC and CNN’s programming is much funnier.

Looks like the end of the line for the rivals of Fox News. Play Taps. Say sayonara. Kiss ’em goodbye. Or in the immortal words of Porky Pig, “Th-th-th–th-th-that’s all, folks.”

CNN airs anti-Semitic twitter tweets

It’s bad enough that CNN begs viewers to send in videos, in effect, asking them to do the job that used to be called reporting. But now they’re airing apparently unedited viewer tweets with what should have been predictably bad results.

It’s bad enough that CNN begs viewers to send in videos, in effect, asking them to do the job that used to be called reporting. But now they’re airing apparently unedited viewer tweets with what should have been predictably bad results.

Politico reports:

CNN’s practice of running viewers’ Twitter feeds at the bottom of its screen put some jarringly raw anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiment on cable during an interview with Wolf Blitzer, a reader pointed out to me today, and the segment above illustrates.

As Wolf Blitzer and Rick Sanchez talked about the crisis in U.S. Israel relations, captions included, “Israel is greedy,” and “Jewish lobby runs America.”

The items are authentic replies to Sanchez’s Twitter feed and come with attributions to their Twitter authors, but the source isn’t immediately obvious to a viewer unfamiliar with the social network, and it’s hard to imagine CNN intends to air conspiracy theories about the “Jewish lobby” (not even the “Israel lobby”!).

Can you imagine, can you just imagine the howls of liberals indignation is this had happened on Fox News?

President of CNN fears Facebook more than Fox News

This may just explain all of CNN’s problems. Jon Klein, president of the ratings-challenged cable news network, says social networking sites like Facebook scare him more than Fox News does.

Be afraid, CNN, be very afraid.

This may just explain all of CNN’s problems. Jon Klein, president of the ratings-challenged cable news network, says social networking sites like Facebook scare him more than Fox News does.

From MediaBistro.com:

Highlighting the fact that Facebook draws many more users than Fox does viewers, Klein also pointed out the unique information-based relationships that social media users develop with one another. “The people you’re friends with on Facebook or the people you follow on Twitter are trusted sources of information,” he said. The popularity of these platforms reflects a high demand for new information, he said. “People bemoan the state of journalism today, but … the audience wants in. They don’t want to turn their backs on information.”

At the same time, all the new conduits for news make the world more confusing and complex, meaning that organizations that can synthesize the information will provide a highly valuable service to their audiences. In this arena, Klein said, CNN has an advantage over its more openly partisan rivals.

The last time Klein commented (on) Fox, a Fox News Channel spokesperson said: “We don’t respond to presidents of fifth-place news networks. The last time we looked, Jon was losing to the Weather Channel, so call us back when he and CNN regain relevancy.”

Well played, Fox spokesperson, well played.

Is anyone out there? CNN’s primetime ratings hit all-time lows.

CNN can’t figure out what it’s doing wrong. All they know is that viewers are abandoning them like they’re the Titanic and Fox News is the iceburg.

Would CNN's last viewer kindly turn out the lights?

CNN can’t figure out what it’s doing wrong. All they know is that viewers are abandoning them like they’re the Titanic and Fox News is the iceburg.

MediaBistro.com reports the chilling details:

CNN’s saw its worst primetime averages in a year as its primetime programs hit ratings lows.

… In February’s total day and primetime demo, CNN finished in fifth place for the first time ever, behind FNC, MSNBC, HLN, and CNBC. (Note: Includes Olympic coverage.)

“Campbell Brown” and “AC360” saw their lowest total viewers since their launch, and “Larry King Live” saw its lowest in at least 13 years. In the demo, it was Cooper’s lowest rated month ever and it was the second lowest rated months for King and Brown. CNN’s primetime was down -54% in total viewers (-57% demo) from last year. The biggest decrease of any network.

Competitively, CNN topped MSNBC in total day and daytime hours, but CNN was also down in total day compared to last year (-35% in total viewers and -40% in the demo).

In its first full-month since launching, “Rick’s List” averaged 560k total viewers and 111k in the demo, which is down -43% and -52% respectively in the time slot from last year.

Say good night, Campbell. Say good night, Larry. Say good night, Rick. Say good night, Cooper.

On a day when the government report that another 36,000 Americans had joined the rolls of the unemployed, National Review caught CNN reporting the story like this:

State unemployment picture brightens

A total of 30 states and Washington, D.C., reported rising unemployment rates in January, down from the number in the previous month, according to a government report released Wednesday.

Jobless rates decreased in nine states, according to the Labor Department’s monthly report on state unemployment. Eleven states reported no change.

Got that?

36,000 people added to the unemployment rolls and 30 states report rising unemployment, yet CNN mysteriously reports that “State unemployment picture brightens.

Glenn Beck gets huge ratings with Massa interview, Larry King gets bupkis

Those poor devils at CNN must wonder why they’re frowned on by the gods of media.

We do not believe the rumor that Larry King is about to star as Bernie in a remake of "Weekend at Bernie's"

Those poor devils at CNN must wonder why they’re frowned on by the gods of media.

MediaBistro.com has the details of the original news network’s latest humiliation:

Glenn Beck may not have thought much of his interview with former Rep. Eric Massa yesterday — he apologized to his viewers saying, “I think this is the first time I have wasted an hour of your time.”
But the interview, which was Massa’s first national TV interview since his resignation from office Monday, was a ratings hit for Beck. The hour drew 3.41M Total Viewers at 5pmET, and 860,000 in the A25-54 demo. That’s just shy of network-leading Bill O’Reilly who pulled 3.5M at 8pmET (925K in the demo.)

But Massa did not have the same pull for CNN. His second interview, with Larry King at 9pmET, drew just 669K Total Viewers (169K in the demo) — fourth place for the hour among the cable news nets after Sean Hannity on FNC, Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, and Joy Behar on HLN.

Good lord. You interview the guy who is arguably the biggest headline maker of the day and you finish behind Rachel Maddow and Joy Behar? Depressing.

King’s response?

“Is it Tuesday yet? I like Tuesdays because that’s shuffleboard night here at the home.”

Saturday Night Live caricatures Wolf Blitzer and CNN. At least we think it was a caricature.

Maybe not. The dictionary defines caricature as “a representation of a person that is exaggerated for comic effect.” So is it still a caricature if nothing really has to be exaggerated?

Jack Cafferty looks into Obama’s future. It ain’t pretty.

Jack Cafferty has a couple major screws loose. But this is interesting because the CNN-er has turned increasingly hostile to President Obama in the last few months.

Don’t get us wrong. We think Jack Cafferty has a couple major screws loose. But this is interesting because the CNN-er has turned increasingly hostile to President Obama in the last few months.

NewsBusters.org reports Cafferty’s look into the crystal ball:

Cafferty: President Obama is taking a lot for granted. Politico is reporting that top White House advisers are quietly working on plans for the 2012 reelection campaign. For now, the planning is made up of private closed door meetings among aides at all levels.

I guess when you have the economy and health care reform and the deficits under control, then you can spend your time worrying about the next election — even if it’s almost three years away.

The article’s sources say the president has given every sign he plans to run again, wants the next campaign to look a lot like the last one.

Well, my guess is it won’t turn out quite the same way.

It’s believed the re-election campaign would be managed by the White House deputy chief of staff, Jim Messina, and possibly be run out of Chicago, which is a good way to remove it from beltway politics and locate it, instead, in that bastion of good government.

The planning still in its early stages, but some say it would likely launch in about a year. Nonetheless, there’s still a long way to go. President Obama’s approval rating hovering at around 50 percent. And a majority of Americans say he doesn’t deserve to be re- elected. The American people were promised change and a lot of them think this administration is just more of the same.

And if the jobs don’t start coming back soon, well, he may want to see if that community organizer job is still open.

From ashes to ashes, from dust to dust, from community organizer to community organizer.

The circle of life. And death panels.

At one time, the cable news pioneer owned the world of cable news. Now its primetime line-up has fewer viewers than Fox News’ 3 a.m. Red Eye show.

National Review’s Media Blog reports the details guaranteed to depress the folks at CNN:

The ratings for Fox News’ ribald Red Eye, a nothing-else-quite-like-it mash-up of news, comedy, and pop-culture commentary, celebrated its third anniversary by beating CNN’s Campbell Brown and Larry King, and tying Anderson Cooper, in the prized 25-54 demographic.

Fox News beating CNN wouldn’t be news, except that Brown, King and Cooper comprise CNN’s primetime lineup, and Red Eye airs at 3:00 A.M. All the more remarkable considering that most conservatives have, you know, jobs.

Ouch.

CNN research shows independents hate mere mention of “hope” and “healthcare”

CNN focus group results show pretty conclusively that the mere mention of the word “hope” triggered an immediate negative response from Republicans and independents. And Obama’s discussion of “health care” caused independents to turn on the him like cornered wolverines.

Fascinating research from CNN that should scare the hell out of President Obama and his team.

The also-ran news network conducted a focus group during the State of the Union Address. They hooked participants up to devices that allowed them to register their reactions in real time to everything the President said.

The results show pretty conclusively that the mere mention of the word “hope” triggered an immediate negative response from Republicans and independents. And Obama’s discussion of “health care” caused independents to turn on the him like cornered wolverines.

New poll may force CNN to change its slogan: Fox now the most trusted name in news

Damn it. Now what’s CNN going to do with all that stationery that says “The Most Trusted Name In News”?

The chant goes up at CNN: "We're number two! We're number two! We're number two!"

Damn it. Now what’s CNN going to do with all that stationery that says “The Most Trusted Name In News”?

Politico reports a survey that’s nothing but bad news for the original cable news network:

A Public Policy Polling nationwide survey of 1,151 registered voters Jan. 18-19 found that 49 percent of Americans trusted Fox News, 10 percentage points more than any other network.

Thirty-seven percent said they didn’t trust Fox, also the lowest level of distrust that any of the networks recorded.

There was a strong partisan split among those who said they trusted Fox — with 74 percent of Republicans saying they trusted the network, while only 30 percent of Democrats said they did.

CNN was the second-most-trusted network, getting the trust of 39 percent of those polled. Forty-one percent said they didn’t trust CNN.

Each of the three major networks was trusted by less than 40 percent of those surveyed, with NBC ranking highest at 35 percent. Forty-four percent said they did not trust NBC, which was combined with its sister cable station MSNBC.

Thirty-two percent of respondents said they trusted CBS, while 31 percent trusted ABC. Both CBS and ABC were not trusted by 46 percent of those polled.

The White House is expected to dispute the validity of the survey because, of course, Fox is not a real news network and, therefore, couldn’t possibly be trusted by anyone.

First Obama lost Massachusetts, now he may lose France

Despite CNN’s non-stop coverage of the continued horror in Haiti, the left wing network found time to ask this burning question, “Has Obama lost France as an ally?”

Former BAFs (Best Amis Forever) in happier times

Despite CNN’s non-stop coverage of the continued horror in Haiti, the left wing network found time to ask this burning question, “Has Obama lost France as an ally?”

According to CNN, “President Nicolas Sarkozy called the new president ‘my buddy’ and tried urgently to be the first world leader to meet with him…” but “…after a year in office, France’s honeymoon with Obama seems clearly over.”

In case you’re wondering how anyone could dislike the Greatest President In History, especially since the left is constantly reminding us of how much the world loves us now that The One has come, the article gives at least three reasons:

1. “First there were published reports that Sarkozy didn’t think Obama knew his briefing books during the G-20 economic summit.”
2. “Then came widespread sniping along official corridors here that Obama was not measuring up when dealing with world leaders, like Russia’s Dimitri Medvedev.”
3. “And then members of Sarkozy’s government openly complained about how long it was taking Obama to make up his mind about Afghanistan.”

But just to make sure that we know who is really to blame, CNN asks the penetrating question, “So one year on, has President Obama, like his predecessor George W. Bush, lost France as an ally?”

Damn that George Bush. He probably caused the loss in Massachusetts, too.

If CNN’s management wants to know why no one takes them seriously, these clips should explain it

Displaying an inexplicable lapse of judgment, CNN brought seriously unfunny comedian Kathy Griffin back to co-anchor its New Years Eve Times Square coverage with Anderson Cooper again this year.

We actually pitied Cooper as we watched. He obviously finds Griffin as unfunny as we do and did that odd forced laugh over and over and over until he became even more annoying than Griffin. Which is really saying something.

Yeah, everyone knows Falcon Heene, the infamous Balloon Boy, but no other broadcasters were juvenile enough and unfunny enough to turn his unusual name into an obscene joke. (And we use the word joke in its broadest definition).

It’s no secret that Anderson Cooper is gay. But we’re pretty sure that’s not reason enough for Griffin to begin referring to him getting a blowjob.

What kind of serious news network would put the awful Griffin on the air and team her up with one of their serious news anchors, even on something as fluffy as New Years Eve in Times Square.

Only CNN. What were they thinking?

2009 sees record ratings at Fox News, record teeth gnashing at MSNBC

Fox News will finish 2009 as the number one cable news network thanks to the highest ratings in the network’s history.

glenn-beck That horrible gnashing of teeth you hear is Chris Matthews. The pathetic whimpering is Keith Olbermann. That plaintive wailing is Rachel Maddow. All because Fox News will finish 2009 as the number one cable news network thanks to the highest ratings in the network’s history.

Broadcasting & Cable reports the rosy details:

Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly provided Fox News' one-two punch in 2009
Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly provided Fox News' one-two punch in 2009

FNC topped the competition in all dayparts: morning (1 million Total Viewers, 340,000 viewers in news’ target demographic of 25-54-year-olds); total day (1.2 million viewers, 323,000 in the demo); primetime (2.2 million viewers, 551,000 in the demo). Those numbers mark year-to-year demo gains of 14% in the morning, 16% in total day and 10% in primetime (Mon-Sun), according to Nielsen.

FNC saw double-digit gains for all of its programs. Year-to-year, Glenn Beck is up 96% among total viewers (2.3 million) and 148% in the demo (612,000). Special Report with Bret Baier posted gains of 25% among total viewers (2 million) and 33% in the demo (454,000). The O’Reilly Factor is up 13% among total viewers (3.3 million) and 27% (801,000) in the demo, marking its tenth consecutive year as the No. 1 cable news program.

As Media Bistro points out, two Fox News success stories stand out:

Glenn Beck is up 96% in total viewers (averaging 2.3 million). He’s also up 148% in the A24-54 demo, averaging 612,000 viewers.

Bill O’Reilly, who now makes it 10 years as the top cable news program, was up 13% in Total Viewers with 3.3 million tuning in and 27% in the demo (801,000). In 2009, O’Reilly often outdrew programs on broadcast networks — just this week, “The Factor” had a larger audience than ABC’s “Better Off Ted” (“Ted” drew 3.183 million viewers, while O’Reilly drew 3.299 million at 8pmET.)

Amusingly, CNN and MSNBC are also touting their 2009 ratings. But that discussion is like the captain of the Titanic arguing with the captain of the Lusitania about which ship is sinking faster.

Life isn’t the same for Anderson Cooper since Lou Dobbs left him

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has seen his numbers slip significantly through the past year. His 10 p.m. show, “Anderson Cooper 360,” has declined 62% in total viewers and 70% in adults 25-54 from November 2008, according to Nielsen figures.

A very pensive Anderson Cooper wonders where his viewers went
A very pensive Anderson Cooper wonders where his viewers went

Hey, get your mind out of the gutter, pal. We’re talking about the latest cable news ratings here.

Here’s how Business Insider tells the tale of Cooper’s precipitous decline:

The respected CNN anchor has seen his numbers slip significantly through the past year. His 10 p.m. show, “Anderson Cooper 360,” has declined 62% in total viewers and 70% in adults 25-54 from November 2008, according to Nielsen figures.

Last month, in Cooper’s time slot, Fox News’ “On the Record” attracted an average viewership of 1.9 million while “360” averaged 672,000; repeats of MSNBC’s “Countdown” and HLN’s Nancy Grace show averaged 655,000 and 458,000, respectively.

What’s the cause of Cooper’s decline? The Business Insider speculates:

So what happened? Let’s see: There’s no presidential election to ramp up ratings; there’s heavy competition from centrist CNN’s noisier rivals (see: Fox News, the No. 1 cable news channel); there’s people catching up on DVR-ed TV shows in the late evening; then there’s the loss of Lou Dobbs in the 7 p.m. anchor chair, among other possible factors.

Oddly enough, the Business Insider concludes with a decidedly unbusinesslike recommendation:

Work those blue eyes, Coop!

Our recommendation would be slightly different:

Wear a short skirt, Coop. It seems to work over at Fox.

Now that Lou Dobbs is leaving CNN, the network's direction is clear

CNN proudly claims its brand was built on impartial reporting. But the compositon of its audience says otherwise. Fact is, its audience tilts to the left even more than Fox News audience tilts to the right.

Breitbart.com did a very interesting analysis of CNN’s audience:

Statistically, CNN’s audience is far from nonpartisan.

Of people who say their main source of news is CNN, 46 percent identify themselves as Democrats and 13 percent as Republicans, according to a July survey by the Pew Research Center (the rest say they’re independent or don’t identify themselves politically). The same study found that Fox’s main source audience was 38 percent Republican and 18 percent Democratic.

To a certain degree, it stands to reason: If so many Republicans find Fox a comfortable home, there are fewer remaining for CNN, particularly in a country where Democrats have an enrollment edge.

One-third of news viewers questioned by Pew this fall said they didn’t perceive CNN as advancing an ideology, more than Fox (24 percent) or MSNBC (27 percent). Still, 37 percent of those questioned view CNN as liberal, and 11 percent as conservative.

We don’t want to say CNN’s audience is shrinking, but if it loses any more viewers, future pollsters won’t be able to put together a valid, representative sample.

The former number one cable news network – the people who invented the business – dropped out of the top 30 prime time cable networks during the last week of October.

As Mediaite explains it:

For the first time in more than two years, CNN fell out of the top 30 cable channels last week in prime time (total viewers). Fox News ranked 3rd, behind USA and ESPN, while MSNBC was 26th. It was the 43rd consecutive week Fox News finished in the top 5 cable channels in prime time.

To rub a little salt in the wound, CNN finished fourth among cable news networks on election night.

Anne Davies is the Washington correspondent for Rupert Murdoch’s Australian newspapers, so one might assume she has her biases under control.
But, alas, it was not to be.

Here, in one remarkable paragraph, Davies clearly demonstrates that liberal media bias is a worldwide phenomenon:

Fox dominated the news channel ratings. Its top host, Bill O’Reilly, who offers right-wing ideology and belittles liberals, attracted an average 881,000 viewers, while CNN’s award-winning Anderson Cooper, who bills himself as a serious journalist who actually goes to war zones, rated only 211,000 viewers.

Well, that about sums it up. Thanks for putting it all in perspective for us, Anne.

Jarrett: Well, you know what? This is…this is the thing. I don’t want to generalize and say Fox is biased or another station is biased. White House retreats in war on Fox News when other networks revolt

hen the White House attempted to bar Fox from interviewing the Pay Czar, ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN said they would also decline to interview him if Fox was barred.

The Huffington Post is outraged – positively outraged – that the rest of the news media has risen up in support of Fox News.

Fox News Channel is twisting American politics in an unprecedented way, and too many members of the press still aren’t getting it.

The White House has exposed Fox News for what it is: not a news organization, but a partisan political entity that is waging a war aimed at destroying the Obama administration and its progressive agenda.

That certainly does appear to be the case, because five other networks stood as one behind Fox News yesterday. When the White House attempted to bar Fox from interviewing the Pay Czar, ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN said they would also decline to interview him if Fox was barred.

We’ve criticized President Obama for taking so long to develop a strategy for the war in Afghanistan. But if the war on Fox is any indication of what happens when a strategy is rushed, take all the time you want on the Afghanistan thing, President Obama. All the time you want.
