Perfect: Charlie Rangel pays his ethics trial attorneys with money he obtained unethically

Rangel tapped his National Leadership PAC for $293,000 to pay his main legal-defense team this year. He took another $100,000 from the PAC in 2009 to pay lawyer Lanny Davis.

You cannot make this stuff up. Oh, you can try, but you cannot make it up.

charlie-rangel
After careful consideration of all the evidence and a quick glance at the guilty look on Rangel's face, we know how we would vote

The New York Post reported:

Congressman Charles Rangel, whose ethics trial starts tomorrow, appears to have improperly used political-action committee money to pay for his defense.

Rangel tapped his National Leadership PAC for $293,000 to pay his main legal-defense team this year. He took another $100,000 from the PAC in 2009 to pay lawyer Lanny Davis.

Two legal experts told The Post such spending is against House rules.
“It’s a breach of congressional ethics,” one campaign-finance lawyer said.
Washington, DC, political lawyer Cleta Mitchell said there is “no authority for a member to use leadership PAC funds as a slush fund to pay for personal or official expenses.”

Leadership PACs are typically used by politicians to donate money to other candidates.

But Rangel seems to have run afoul of House ethics rules. Lawmakers are generally allowed to use campaign cash to pay their lawyers, but this is limited to money in their personal campaign committee and they must ask permission first, the campaign-finance lawyer said.

Far be it from us to rush to judgment in this case, but there’s one piece of evidence screaming that Rangel is guilty:

His attorney is Lanny Davis.

Of course, the trial circus will be held during the lame duck session of Congress while Democrats still hold the majority. You don’t think that will influence the vote, do you?

Nahhhhhh.

Feel good story of the day: “Flag boy” gets an escort on his ride to school

The “flag boy” story continued Monday morning when young Cody Alicea rode his bike to school with an escort — hundreds of patriotic bikers, many of them veterans.

Remember last week’s story about the California boy who was told by his school principal that he could no longer fly the American flag on his bicycle?

The school eventually backed down in the face of public outrage.

But the story continued Monday morning when young Cody Alicea rode his bike to school with an escort – hundreds of patriotic bikers, many of them veterans.

Immigration, terrorists, naked breasts. Ahhh, we knew that would get your attention.

A Danish politician has come up with a novel idea: Show all incoming immigrants images of naked breasts.

In a move designed to (a) reduce the number of Islamic terrorists entering the country, (b) increase the number of other tourists entering the country, or (c) both, a Danish politician has come up with a novel idea:

naked-breasts
Leave it to the Danes to develop the world's most sophisticated terrorist detection system

Show all incoming immigrants images of naked breasts.

Al-Arabiya has the naked truth:

Want to immigrate to Denmark? Then you need to be able to handle to look at a pair of naked women’s breasts, at least if Peter Skaarup, foreign policy spokesman of the far-right Danish People’s party has his way.

According to Skaarup, a documentary film about Denmark that will be shown as part of an upcoming immigration test for foreigners needs to have a pair of breasts in it, to intimidate any extremists from attempting to enter the tiny Scandinavian country.

Because a topless woman on a beach would be a good example of the Danish open-mindedness, Skaarup points out.

This, he said, is mainly relevant for immigrants coming from fundamentalist societies where women are oppressed and are not allowed to display their sexuality or even their hair. On the other hand Danish women are allowed to wear –-or not wear— what they please, underlining that he is not trying to provoke anyone with his statements.

… Integration spokesman for the Conservative Party, one of two government parties, Naser Khader says “a pair of naked breasts is no protection against extremism.”

“It’s quite the opposite, fundamentalists are so obsessed with sex that they will be pouring in over the borders. Maybe we should try with naked pigs,” Khader writes on his page on social networking site Facebook.

He’s kidding. At least we think he’s kidding. But we also think that’s not the worst idea we’ve ever heard.

If either concept is instituted, it will no longer be the terrorists’ dynamite vests that explode, it’ll be their heads. And that’s a much better outcome.

We don't wish to be the bearers of bad news, Rep. Clyburn, but you just got screwed

For some unknown reason, James Clyburn, the top ranking black Democrat in the House, seems to be taking the fall for the party’s failure in the midterm elections. How else can you explain his “promotion” from the number two position to the number three position?

Politico.com has the demotion details:

House Democrats have reached a deal to keep both Reps. Steny Hoyer and James Clyburn in the leadership, with Hoyer (D-Md.) serving as minority whip and Clyburn (D-S.C) taking a new, as-yet-still-undefined number three position.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calf.) who is seeking the minority leader’s job in the next Congress, reached an agreement with Clyburn on late Friday night, and Democratic leaders quickly announced the deal.

Clyburn’s title and responsibilities were not specified in the announcement from Pelosi’s office, and Democratic leadership aides scrambled to explain the deal to reporters.

No shit they announced it quickly. They had to do it while Clyburn was still basking in the warm glow of the party’s press release and before he figured out that he’d been screwed.

The best idea from President Obama’s debt commission: Turn U.N. spending into unspending

The United States gives more than $6.3 billion (with a "b") to the United Nations every year

CNSnews.com covers the best idea of the week:

Cutting “voluntary” funding from the United Nations would trim $300 million off the federal deficit by 2015, according to a draft report from the president’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

“According to the Office of Management and Budget, the United States provided over $6.3 billion in taxpayer funds to the United Nations in FY2009. Less than half ($2.7 billion) of that total went to ‘assessed’ dues — payments that the United States is charged for being a member and for its share of peacekeeping operations around the world,” the draft report says.

“The United States is by far the largest donor to the United Nations in terms of assessed dues,” the draft continued. “However, the United States gives the United Nations more than $3.5 billion in ‘voluntary’ funds each year. This option allows the United States to remain a member in good standing of the United Nations by contributing the full dues that will be assessed, but reduces voluntary payments by 10 percent, which will save $300 million per year.”

How about if we cut the “voluntary” payments completely and save the full $3.5 billion? According to our preliminary calculations, that idea is about ten times better than the Debt Commission’s recomendation.

Its readers are ignorant? This is truly a case of "Those who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones."

Forbes.com has the inside info on the ignorance:

The New York Times cultivates an image as the preferred read of the intellectual elite, but at least one of the paper’s higher-ups seems to think its customers aren’t all that bright.

During a panel discussion at the Digital Hollywood New York conference, Gerald Marzorati, the Times’s assistant managing editor for new media and strategic initiatives, explained why the paper’s print business is still robust. “We have north of 800,000 subscribers paying north of $700 a year for home delivery,” Marzorati said. “Of course, they don’t seem to know that.”

As evidence that Times subscribers don’t realize how much a subscription costs, he pointed to what happened when the paper raised its home-delivery price by 5 percent during the recession: Only 0.01 percent of subscribers canceled. “I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they’re literally not understanding what they’re paying,” he said. “That’s the beauty of the credit card.”

Far be it from us to cast aspersions, but considering the New York Times editorial board’s blind adherence to Obama’s economic program, it appears that those geniuses are no smarter with money than their readers are.

Piña coladas for everyone! When the rigorous round of public and private meetings are over, government investigators will discuss their findings poolside.

Members of a key panel created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus bill, have scheduled a meeting on November 22 to consider ways to prevent “fraud, waste, and abuse of Recovery Act funds.” The meeting will be held at the super-luxe Ritz Carlton Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

The group is the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel, a sub-committee of the larger Recovery Accountability and Transparency board (sometimes known as the RAT board). The stimulus bill set up the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel, or RIAP, to make recommendations to identify and prevent waste of the bill’s $814 billion in stimulus spending.

“The purpose of the November 22, 2010 meeting is to allow the RIAP to have an open dialogue, with input from the public, on issues relating to fraud, waste, and abuse of Recovery Act funds,” says a notice in the Federal Register. Specifically, participants in the meeting will discuss various techniques to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse, as well as larger issues of transparency and public awareness. Portions of the meeting will be open to the public, while other parts will be closed.

It doesn’t get much ritzier than the Ritz-Carlton. The Editor was once booted from the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California for attempting to wear jeans…gasp…at dinner.

Not to worry. If that were to happen in this case, we’re confident members of the stimulus waste panel would immediately rush out and purchase new pants on your dime.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton waves goodbye to 150,000,000 of your tax dollars

VOA News has the story:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced new funding to the Palestinian Authority and held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Wednesday, a day before her scheduled meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York.

Clinton said that she and her Egyptian counterpart discussed several issues here in Washington, ranging from Israeli-Palestinian issues to the international tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

“It is important that we do everything we can at a particularly sensitive time in the region to try to redouble our efforts to achieve a two-state solution [to Israeli-Palestinian tensions], to help stabilize the situation in Sudan, and to work to ensure that the people of Lebanon can have accountability in the search for justice,” said Hillary Clinton.

Blah, blah, blah, Hillary. How, exactly, are we going solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? By giving the Palestinians money, of course.

Earlier, Clinton announced that the United States has transferred $150 million in new aid to the Palestinian Authority to help close its budget gap.

“This new funding will help the Palestinian Authority pay down its debt, continue to deliver services and security to its people, and keep the progress going,” she said. “It will support our work together to expand Palestinians’ access to schools, clinics and clean drinking water in both the West Bank and Gaza [Strip].”

The secretary of state said the funds bring U.S. direct budget assistance to the Palestinian Authority to $225 million this year. Overall support and investment to the Palestinians is nearly $600 million for the year.

Got that? It’s not just a cash bonanza for the terrorists, it’s an investment. That is, “the investing of money or capital in order to gain profitable returns.”

Note to the Obama administration: This investment’s going to turn out about as profitably as the one you made in General Motors. Except that General Motors doesn’t want to kill every single one of us.

Domestic terrorist Bill Ayers on his book dedication controversy: “Who are you gonna believe, me or your lyin’ eyes?”

William Ayers, 1960s radical and retired University of Illinois at Chicago professor, said Wednesday any suggestion he dedicated a book to the man who assassinated Robert Kennedy was fiction invented by right-wing bloggers.

Poor Bill Ayers. It’s hard being the nation’s most misunderstood domestic terrorist. When he’s not busy blowing up buildings, plotting the death of 25 million Americans or spending some “personal time” with a well-worn picture of Che, he’s sticking it to the man by whining about the blogosphere.

william ayers
William Ayers never dedicated a book to Sirhan Sirhan. And he never stepped on the flag, either

Here is what the Chicago Sun-Times had to say.

William Ayers, 1960s radical and retired University of Illinois at Chicago professor, said Wednesday any suggestion he dedicated a book to the man who assassinated Robert Kennedy was fiction invented by right-wing bloggers.

“There’s not a shred of truth in it,” he said.

Wait, there is more:

He said his situation was like being “caught in a Kafkaesque nightmare of trying to explain something that is insane” and that a reporter asking questions about the dedication of a book she has not read was part of the “Alice in Wonderland world we all live in.”

To be fair it has been a while since we’ve read The Trail, but we’re not quite sure that Ayer’s comparison is entirely accurate. There’s nothing very nightmarish about a rich guy spending his sunset years in luxury when he should be spending them in jail. Just as it is not the world that is absurd in a situation in which an avowed extremist expects you to believe his words over ironclad documentation to the contrary.

As far as the reference to Alice in Wonderland, we can’t account for that either. We went to go see that movie starring Stallone and Jet Li instead.

Liberals, especially those on MSNBC, constantly say conservatives are racists. Yet now we have another example of an MSNBC host who can’t tell one black man from another.

Last year, there was the incident where Contessa Brewer couldn’t tell Jesse Jackson from Al Shaprton. And now Chris Matthews has exhibited the same sort of racism (at least that’s what they’d call it if a conservative did it).

The Hardball host got a bit confused. While introducing Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), Matthews called him “Congressman Clyburn,” thinking he was James Clyburn (D-SC).

You know what? We’re going to cut Matthews some slack here and say this wasn’t racism. Instead of thinking all black people look alike, he may just think all Democrats look alike.

Spend, Michelle, spend. You still have checks in your checkbook.

The Times of India has the story of Michelle’s profligate New Delhi spending spree:

While her husband talked trade, Michelle Obama did what most women love to do — shop. The First Lady, who has quite a reputation as a fashionista and is known to send stock prices of clothing companies zooming when she slips into one of their dresses, ran up a bill of thousands on an assortment of Indian handicrafts and textiles.

While visiting the 25 stalls at the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in Pragati Maidan, she even stopped to woefully exclaim, ”I wish I had brought more money!”

The purchases didn’t stop till the purse was empty. In the visit that lasted over two hours, she delighted craftsmen with loads of Christmas shopping.

No money? No problem? My name is Obama and I’m here to spend.

Everything we know about Democrats we learned on TV

Democrats might be expected to hate this test pattern because it shows an Indian - oh, we beg your pardon - a Native American.

Republicans are vile Neanderthals who live back in the dark ages (more commonly known as the 1950s). And Democrats are modern, enlightened beings who warmly embrace diversity as epitomized by today’s gay community.

At least that’s what Democrats would have you believe.

But this list of favorite TV shows as ranked by members of the two parties puts the lie to that theory.

We’re sorry for claiming Captain Kirk was in command of Captain Picard’s starship

Next thing you know, they'll confuse the Klingons and the Romulans

YESTERDAY, a news.com.au article incorrectly stated that the Star Trek starship USS Enterprise-E, otherwise known as model NNC-1701-E, was the successor to Captain Kirk’s original USS Enterprise. It has since been brought to our attention that the NNC-1701-E in fact came two models after Captain Kirk retired and was under the command of Captain Jean Luc Picard.

Read the original, poorly-researched article here

User “Your Mum’s Lunch” led the charge of those who correctly pointed out that after losing the original Enterprise to the Klingons, Captain Kirk was given the Excelsior Class Enterprise-B as a stop-gap measure until the refit of the Enterprise-A was completed.

Kirk’s last ship was the Ambassador Class Enterprise-C.

Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E were in fact, the first of the Galaxy Class models and were under the command of Captain Picard.

There were also some concerns about whether the incorrect use of the term “hyperspace” in describing warp drive technology may harm the original Star Trek concept, particularly the books.

News.com.au apologises unreservedly for the error.

There was no intention whatsoever to suggest Captain Kirk may have commanded the Galaxy Class Starships Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E.

Any damage to the Star Trek brand incurred by the use of the term “hyperspace” is regretful.

No malice was intended and a correction to the original article will be made.

We also agree that Patrick Stewart is a handsome man, a sentiment expressed by several readers.

Addendum – We’re also sorry for any errors in this apology.

Patrick Stewart handsome? Piffle. We’re pretty sure that alien women prefer Captain Kirk twenty-to-one.

Newsweek: TV show with black stars cancelled because America’s not ready for super-negros

Newsweek introduces the concept of “super-negros” to explain why a really horrible TV show was canceled. Imagine the uproar if Fox had said the same thing. Race mongering writer Allison Samuels explains it all in Newsweek.

Newsweek introduces the concept of “super-negros” to explain why a really horrible TV show was canceled. Imagine the uproar if Fox had said the same thing.

Race mongering writer Allison Samuels explains it all in Newsweek:

I think it’s possible that a slightly more obvious, disturbing reason could be behind Undercovers’ failure, and it’s pretty familiar: race. Prime-time audiences just weren’t ready for “super-negros” on the small screen. And that’s exactly what Undercovers was: a show about black people doing very “unblack” things. Before anyone gets upset, let me explain. “Super-negro” was a term my family often used while watching old Sidney Poitier movies back in the day. In Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (our favorite), Poitier portrays a black doctor in love with a white, wealthy young socialite during the ’60s. Pretty early in the film, you begin to realize that Poitier’s character is not just any black doctor (an accomplishment in itself for most people then, and now); he’s a black doctor with degrees from several Ivy League universities, an internationally known scholar behind cures of dozens of diseases in Africa and elsewhere. Overkill. But Poitier portraying a “regular negro” was simply not good enough during those times, so the “super-negro” was born. The same could be said of his character from In the Heat of the Night, a Philadelphia cop with highly decorated awards.

So if we understand Samuels’ logic, audiences 40 years ago accepted the super negro, but today’s audience won’t. Race relations, apparently, have gone backward in the last four decades.

According to HarperCollins.com, “Allison Samuels is an award-winning Newsweek correspondent who has covered sports and entertainment since 1996. Samuels is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Big Sisters of America, and the UCLA Black Studies Department board of directors. She lives in Los Angeles.”

Here’s another concept, Allison, you race mongering moron: Undercovers sucked. Absolutely sucked. It would have sucked if it had starred white actors. It would have sucked if it had starred Martian actors.

Well, no, actually, now that we think about it, Martian actors would have been pretty cool. Undercovers may have lasted a few more weeks if it had starred Martians as long as they weren’t super Martians. The American people just aren’t ready to accept super Martians.

Gene Shalit Chris Matthews says the new Valerie Plame movie is this generation’s Casablanca

On Monday night the tremors and hallucinations returned and he told his audience that Fair Game, the new movie about the Valerie Plame scandal, stacks up favorably against Casablanca.

There was a brief moment last week when it appeared that Chris Matthews had regained a bit of his sanity. Never mind. The moment passed.

On Monday night the tremors and hallucinations returned and he told his audience that Fair Game, the new movie about the Valerie Plame scandal, stacks up favorably against Casablanca.

Matthews: Let me finish tonight with a stirring movie I saw last night. I had heard of the first-rate script, the masterful performances by the leads, Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. What I was not prepared for in Fair Game was the story itself, the wondrous dramatic courage of it all. This is one fine movie. While there will never be another Casablanca, Fair Game is perfect for our murky time.

On this review, we give Chris two thumbs down. And one finger up.

Expect an increase of PDS – Palin Derangement Syndrome – in the coming days. Until Sarah Palin announces that she will or will not run in the 2012 election the left will remain in attack mode with an increased effort to smear her. Tuesday night on CNN the host of 360 made his contribution to the cause.

Anderson Cooper was commenting on the sniping between Palin and the Wall Street Journal. It’s a bit convoluted so stick with us: Palin made a statement based on something she read in the Journal. A reporter for the Journal attacked her on her facts. Palin fired back, pointing out she got her info from his paper! The WSJ posted an editorial that defended Palin.

Cooper’s take on this?

Palin owes the guy an apology for attacking him and is becoming unhinged because she has been attacking the media a lot lately.

Yes, in the Bizzaro world of Liberals, the woman who has been under a steady barrage of attack from the media since before they even knew who she was (as we learned in the Journ-O-Listo scandal) is the one who is unhinged and should apologize!

Cooper spent five full minutes on his Palin bash before bringing on guests David Gergen and Dana Loesch to offer their opinions. Why aren’t the guest spots seen in the clip CNN posted at Cooper’s site? Because BOTH disagreed with him and pointed out that Palin was right. The network, in true CNN-hide-the-truth fashion, edited them out.

Our question for the Coop: Did you do a segment demanding an apology from PBS’s Gwen Ifill and the Daily Kos’ Marky Milquetoast for their farcical and incorrect attack on Palin for her statement to the Tea Party, “Let’s party like it’s 1773”?

Of course not.

Florida’s attorney general says 28 states may join lawsuit against ObamaCare

Florida Attorney General-elect Pam Bondi predicts that a majority of states will join the suit against Obamacare. She says as many as 28 states may join the suit.

Only 43 states elect attorneys general. Florida Attorney General-elect Pam Bondi predicts that a majority of them will join the suit against Obamacare. She says as many as 28 states may join the suit.

Even liberal California just elected a Republican attorney general, so it will be interesting to see if he goes against Governor Moonbeam and joins the suit.

By the way, when did they pass the law saying that all Republican women must be hot? We must have missed that in the excitement of last week’s elections. After Janet Reno the words “hot” and “attorney general” were never supposed to be used together in the same sentence. But Pam Bondi? Va-va-voom

Jesse Jackson says repealing Obamacare = creeping genocide

Not just regular old genocide, mind you, but the insidious creeping genre of genocide. You know, the kind of genocide the killed off Democrat incumbents last week.

Not just regular old genocide, mind you, but the insidious creeping genre of genocide.

You know, the kind of genocide the killed off Democrat incumbents last week. The kind that crept up on them in the middle of the night and killed off damn near every Blue Dogs who supported ObamaCare. The kind that killed off liberal hopes of extending this socialist state that has become Amerika.

You know, the really, really bad kind of genocide.
