Robert Byrd now favors passing ObamaCare via reconciliation, but he opposed it back when the Clintons suggested it. Here’s what he said on the floor of the Senate back on April 5, 2001.
We’re a little shaky on the history on this one. How many centuries has Robert Byrd actually been in the Senate? How did he get along with Abraham Lincoln?
Byrd now favors passing ObamaCare via reconciliation, but he opposed it back when the Clintons suggested it. Here’s what he said on the floor of the Senate back on April 5, 2001:
The Democratic leadership pleaded with me at length to support the idea that the Clinton healthcare bill should be included in that year’s reconciliation package. They came to my office on the floor below. President Clinton got on the phone and called me also and pressed me to allow his massive health care bill to be insulated by reconciliation’s protection. He called me on the telephone.
I felt that changes as dramatic as the Clinton healthcare package, which would affect every man, woman and child in the United States, should be subject to scrutiny. I said, ‘Mr. President, I cannot in good conscience, turn my face the other way. That’s why we have a Senate, is to amend and to debate freely. And that health bill, important as it is, is so complex, so far reaching, that the people of this country need to know what’s in it. And moreover, Mr. President, we senators need to know what’s in it before we go there.
He accepted that, thanked me and we said goodbye. I could not, I would not, and I did not allow that package to be handled in such a cavalier manner. It was the threat of the use of the Byrd rule.
Reconciliation was never, never, never intended to be a shield, to be used as a shield for controversial legislation.
Maybe he’s changed his mind. Maybe he’s lost his mind. Maybe he’s just a confused old man. Take your choice.
Chris Matthews tries to compare former Vice President Dick Cheney to Jor-El, Superman’s father on the planet Krypton.
We are concerned about the health of MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. Very concerned. The MSNBC host has apparently suffered an unannounced stroke that has left him unable to put together a coherent question. Take this clip, for example, where he tries to compare former Vice President Dick Cheney to Jor-El, Superman’s father on the planet Krypton.
Matthews: One of the new ideas that Dick Cheney’s trying to sell right now is his daughter, Steve. He reminds me of that Marlon Brando character in…in Superman up on Krypton. The island is about to…the planet is about to blow up. So he puts his little kid, in this case Superman, into a little capsule and sends him to Earth. It’s like Cheney knows his whole world is blowing up, so he’s put his little daughter in this capsule and is sending her to us. It just seems like he’s spending all his time, it’s kind of like a booster rocket, building one for his offspring. What’s going on with this family?
We were tempted to close this out this story with a Bizarro reference, but it would have been just be too damn easy.

In Barack Obama’s world of leftist lunacy, it’s wrong to make an honest observation about the patently absurd. In this case, a State Department official has been forced to apologize to Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi.
The Associated Press has all the details:
Chief department spokesman P.J. Crowley said he regretted any offense caused by his response to a reporter’s question about Gadhafi’s recent call for a holy war against Switzerland. Libya said last week it might take action against American business interests there if a formal apology was not made. ”I understand that my personal comments were perceived as a personal attack,” Crowley told reporters. “The comments do not reflect U.S. policy and were not intended to offend. I apologize if they were taken that way. I regret that my comments have become an obstacle to further progress in our bilateral relationship.”
He made the remark in question on Feb. 26 when he was asked what the U.S. thought of Gadhafi’s appeal for “jihad” against Switzerland after the country banned construction of new mosque minarets. Crowley said he was reminded of Gadhafi’s lengthy speech at the United Nations last September in which the Libyan leader ripped pages from the U.N. Charter.
“I saw that report and it just brought me back to a day in September, one of the more memorable sessions of the U.N. General Assembly that I can recall: lots of words and lots of papers flying all over the place, not necessarily a lot of sense,” he said.
The joke wasn’t funny. That’s the only thing Crowley should apologize for.

The President’s socialist agenda isn’t the problem. His horrible appointments aren’t the problem. And his massive deficits aren’t the problem. No. The problem is that just too many people watch that damn Fox News.

The President’s socialist agenda isn’t the problem. His horrible appointments aren’t the problem. And his massive deficits aren’t the problem. No. The problem is that just too many people watch that damn Fox News.
The Telegraph UK reports the denial on the Potomac:
“Obama’s big problem,” a senior Democrat told me, “is that four times as many people watch Fox News as watch CNN.” The Fox network is a remarkable cultural phenomenon which almost shocks those of us from a country where a technical rule of impartiality is applied in the broadcast media. With little rest, it pours out rage 24 hours a day: its message is of the construction of the socialist state, the hijacking of America by “progressives” who now dominate institutions, the indoctrination of children, the undermining of religion and the expropriation of public money for these nefarious projects. The public loves it, and it is manifestly stirring up political activism against Mr Obama, and also against those in the Republican Party who are not deemed conservatives. However, it is arguable whether the now-reorganising Right is half as effective in its assault on the President as some of Mr Obama’s own party are.
Got that? Fox pours out rage 24 hours a day. Because rage is really appealing and people are really drawn to watch it 24 hours a day.
Morons. That’s it. No other comment necessary.

It turns out Obama’s most profuse apologies came before he was elected President. He apparently spent the bulk of his long, rich career in the United States Senate apologizing to other Senators, witnesses, aides, and anyone else who happened to be near the Capitol.
Barack Obama has aplogized to the Muslim world, the Special Olympics, descendents of slaves, and everyone else with pouts on their faces in his general vicinity.
But it turns out Obama’s most profuse apologies came before he was elected President. He apparently spent the bulk of his long, rich career in the United States Senate apologizing to other Senators, witnesses, aides, and anyone else who happened to be near the Capitol.
Of course, all these apologies give rise to the question “Where was Senator Obama and why was he always late for committee meetings?”

George Will took Berkeley professor Robert Reich to school on this week’s edition of ABC’s This Week, on healthcare and liberalism.
George Will took Berkeley professor Robert Reich to school on this week’s edition of ABC’s This Week.
You almost felt sorry for Reich. Almost, but not quite.
Reich: The health insurers are not, George, you said they’re popular and everybody likes their health insurer. They like their doctor. They hate their health insurer. And health insurance is going up in terms of rates 20, 30, 40, 50 percent in many states. In fact, Goldman Sachs just this past week has said to its many of its investors, “Invest in some insurance companies because they don’t have competition, and they have, are exhibiting huge profits.” That is money directly out of the pockets of Americans.
Will: A, you say they have huge profits. As you know, confiscate all the profits of all the health insurance companies, with those profits you could finance our healthcare for 48 hours. What you do for the next 363 days I don’t know. Second, you say there’s not enough competition? Fine, let them compete in a national market across state lines.
Reich: Yes, let them compete across state lines, fine. But not a race to the bottom. Set minimum federal standards because we’ve seen over and over again that the recipients of health insurance don’t know what they are buying very often. Until there are common standards, minimal standards, then people are going to be taken. And that is what’s happened over and over again.
Will: There you have the premise of this legislation and the core of today’s liberalism: the American people are such dopes they can’t be counted upon to buy their own insurance.
A few minutes later, Reich was undoubtedly in the producer’s office begging not to be booked on the same show as Will ever again.

After promising that jobs were job #1, then immediately returning to the health care debate, President Obama has seen his approval numbers slump to an all-time low.

After promising that jobs were job #1, then immediately returning to the health care debate, President Obama has seen his approval numbers slump to an all-time low.
Rasmussen reports the lastest numbers:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 22% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (43%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -21. That matches the lowest Approval Index rating yet recorded for this President…
Forty-two percent (42%) of Democrats Strongly Approve while 72% of Republicans Strongly Disapprove. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, 17% Strongly Approve and 45% Strongly Disapprove.
Fifty-seven percent (57%) believe that passage of the proposed health care legislation will hurt the economy. Just 25% believe it will help.
Prepare yourself to see this story repeated countless times in the months ahead. The only difference will be new lows.

If malpractice reform is so important to the Republicans, he wondered, then why didn’t they do something about it when they ran the show in Washington, DC.
Obama: Medical malpractice has been mentioned. Now, look, let me be honest. This is something, historically, that Democrats have been more resistant to than Republicans. I will note that, when we had a Republican president and Republicans controlled the House and Republicans controlled the Senate, somehow it didn’t happen. And I’m surprised.
(Unknown): We needed 60 votes in the Senate, too, Mr. President.
Obama: Well, the — see… (LAUGHTER) See there?
Greatest President In History. And smartest darn professor of Constitutional Law Ever, too.

Maybe not. The dictionary defines caricature as “a representation of a person that is exaggerated for comic effect.” So is it still a caricature if nothing really has to be exaggerated?

Massa: Rahm Emanuel is son of the devil’s spawn… He is an individual who would sell his mother to get a vote. He would strap his children to the front end of a steam locomotive…
I am showering, naked as a jaybird, and here comes Rahm Emanuel, not even with a towel wrapped around his tush, poking his finger in my chest, yelling at me.
It sounded l like the beginning of a beautiful relationship, but, sadly, it marked only the beginning of the end.

Rather: Part of the undertow in the coming election is going to be President Obama’s leadership. And the Republicans will make a case and a lot of independents will buy this argument. “Listen he just hasn’t been, look at the health care bill. It was his number one priority. It took him forever to get it through and he had to compromise it to death.” And a version of, “Listen he’s a nice person, he’s very articulate” this is what’s been used against him, “but he couldn’t sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.”
Now, then, had you asked Is Dan Rather stupid, well, that’s a whole different question.

Eric Massa explains how he “sexually harassed” one of his sub-ordinates

Eric Massa explains how he “sexually harassed” one of his subordinates:
“I said goodnight to the bridesmaid. I sat at down at the table where my whole staff was, all of them, by the way bachelors. One of them looked at me and — as they would do after, I don’t know, 15 gin and tonics and goodness only knows how many bottles of champagne — a staff member made an intonation to me that maybe I should be chasing after the bridesmaid. His points were clear and his words were far more colorful than that.
“And I grabbed the staff member sitting next to me and I said, ‘What I really ought to be doing is frakking you,’ and then tossled the guy’s hair and left, went to my room, because I knew the party was getting to a point where I shouldn’t be there.”
“Was that inappropriate of me? Absolutely.”
Inappropriate? Maybe. But we suspect the real problem here is that Massa wasn’t tousling Barney Frank’s hair when he suggested a little sport “frakking.”
Instead of being forced to resign, Massa would have been promoted to a leadership position.

Is the President’s resume accurate when it comes to his career and qualifications? I can corroborate that Obama’s “teaching career” at Chicago was, to put it kindly, a sham.

In case you were having trouble telling the difference, here’s what separates IHateTheMedia.com from the New York Times:
We haven’t checked out the veracity of this story because we don’t have the resources. They haven’t checked out the veracity of this story because they don’t want to know the truth.
It’s just one of those stories that came floating in over the internet:
Is the President’s resume accurate when it comes to his career and qualifications? I can corroborate that Obama’s “teaching career” at Chicago was, to put it kindly, a sham.
I spent some time with the highest tenured faculty member at Chicago Law a few months back, and he did not have many nice things to say about “Barry.” Obama applied for a position as an adjunct and wasn’t even considered. A few weeks later the law school got a phone call from the Board of Trustees telling them to find him an office, put him on the payroll, and give him a class to teach. The Board told him he didn’t have to be a member of the faculty, but they needed to give him a temporary position. He was never a professor and was hardly an adjunct.
The other professors hated him because he was lazy, unqualified, never attended any of the faculty meetings, and it was clear that the position was nothing more than a political stepping stool. According to my professor friend, he had the lowest intellectual capacity in the building. He also doubted whether he was legitimately an editor on the Harvard Law Review, because if he was, he would be the first and only editor of an Ivy League law review to never be published while in school (publication is or was a requirement).
True? What do you think?

Another month of absolutely stellar ratings over at MSNBC. Hah! Just kidding. They sucked even more than they did in January.
MediaBistro.com reports the highlights lowlights:
“Countdown” and “Rachel Maddow” ended the month averaging the second-most viewers in their time slots, ahead of CNN and HLN, but behind Fox News. “Countdown” finished the month averaging 964,000 total viewers (350,000 demo) and “Rachel Maddow” finished with 819K total viewers (213K demo).
But both were down from February of 2009. Olbermann was down -29% in total viewers (-43% demo) and Maddow was down -44% in total viewers (-33% demo). “Morning Joe” remains in 4th among the morning shows, and MSNBC programs from 9am-5pm still trail CNN and HLN.

Don’t blame unemployment on the Obama administration. Blame it on global warming. That’s what White House economic advisor Larry Summers says.

Don’t blame unemployment on the Obama administration. Blame it on global warming. That’s what White House economic advisor Larry Summers says.
He actually said this winter’s blizzards would cause unemployment to spike, but other voices in the administration have already blamed the cold weather on global warming. So it stands to reason that the administration’s official position must be that global warming is causing unemployment.
Reuters reports the details:
“The blizzards that affected much of the country during the last month are likely to distort the statistics. So it’s going to be very important … to look past whatever the next figures are to gauge the underlying trends,” Summers said in an interview with CNBC, according to a transcript.
Construction activity was hit particularly hard by the storms, but many restaurants and stores also had to close, putting the brakes on hiring plans and temporarily throwing some employees out of work.
We are, of course, highly-trained economists here at IHateTheMedia.com and our theory is that unemployment won’t start to decrease until this crew in Washington joins the ranks of the unemployed.
The climate’s not looking very good for them at the moment. And it has nothing to do with global warming.

George Lopez, the well-known unfunny comedian who called Sarah Palin a bitch on his ratings-challenged late night TV show last week, looks like he may be like he may be the target of a little name calling.
The New York Post has the deadbeat details:
The highly paid host of TBS’s “Lopez Tonight” has allegedly been welshing for more than a year and a half on $21,000 he owes to Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation, which helps battered women and their kids.
Lopez, an avid golfer, participated in the charity outing at Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor in Westchester on July 15, 2008, along with Bill Clinton, Mayor Bloomberg, Yogi Berra, Billy Crystal, Bob Gibson, Ron Darling, Joe Girardi and Rudy Giuliani.
As the auction was ending after dinner in the clubhouse, Donald Trump spoke to the club’s executive vice president, Dan Scavino. “Donald said, ‘Let’s raise some more money for Joe’s cause. Why don’t you go up there and auction off a one-year honorary membership to the club?’ ” Scavino told us.
The club’s initiation fee is $300,000, and annual dues are $18,000. Scavino started the bidding at $5,000 and it rose to $20,000. “The guy in front of me was literally taking out his checkbook for the $20,000,” Scavino said. “I was about to say ‘Going once, going twice,’ when I get a bid from the back of the room. It was Lopez,” who upped the ante by $1,000.
While bidders for other prizes paid up immediately, Lopez didn’t, Scavino said. And when he was asked for payment later, he said, “I’ll send you a check.”
To nudge Lopez into paying, Scavino e-mailed him in December, offering to extend the membership through the 2009 season, but never received a reply.
“Several attempts by the foundation have been unsuccessful in getting the money,” a source said. “I think Lopez made that bid just to show off in front of the crowd and to impress Donald Trump.”
