Hypocritical congressman’s Earth Day message: Trees make better drivers

In a pre-Earth Day speech before the Alliance for Community Trees on Wednesday, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said that more trees lining urban streets makes people better drivers.

We should have expected Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat, to make his presence known on Earth Day. Hell, any time ol’ Earl spots a chance to say something ludicrous about the environment, he jumps at it.

In a pre-Earth Day speech before the Alliance for Community Trees on Wednesday, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said that more trees lining urban streets makes people better drivers.

“Having an urban tree canopy actually retards speeding,” said Blumenauer.

“The evidence is powerful that people, when they are given a streetscape with street trees, that can–it has an effect,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s calming or it changes the visual impact on them, but it changes driving behavior and makes those communities safer.”

Please bear in mind that we have nothing against trees here at IHateTheMedia.com. In fact, IHTM is headquartered in one of the loveliest tree-lined towns in America.

But Blumenauer is the same Oregon Congressman who proposed a tax on toilet paper to save our precious resources and then jetted off with Nancy Pelosi to save the world at the Copenhagen global warming boondoggle.

So Blumenauer’s the kind of environmentalist who says save energy, then wastes it by jetting off to Copenhagen. The kind of guy who wants to tax toilet paper, but knows he’ll never have to use any because his butt is kept spotless by a non-stop parade of environmentalists who kiss it clean.

Somehow, we figure that if this guy is promoting the importance of trees one day, he’ll propose a tax on leaves the next day.

HLN shows why it’s the number four news network: Accidentally runs parody version of Lane Bryant ad

In an attempt to make Fox look bad, the ratings-challenged network did a report on the dust-up. But instead of running the actual commercial during that report, they unwittingly ran a parody.

Lane Bryant wanted to run a sexy commercial (the top video) during the family hour (8-9 pm), but ABC and Fox rejected the commercial.

Fox said the commercial could run as is after 9 p.m. or could run with some unspecified edits at the earlier hour. Lane Bryant did the good American thing to do and screamed that they were being discriminated against. The networks is guilty of sizism, they claimed.

Enter the geniuses at HLN.

In an attempt to make Fox look bad, the ratings-challenged network did a report on the dust-up. But instead of running the actual commercial during that report, they unwittingly ran a parody (the bottom video).

Watch closely. The only difference between the two versions are the messages on the actress’ phone.

But it’s that message that turns the parody into true sizism (we can’t believe we’re even using that stupid word. But it seems to work in this instance).

The bottom line? HLN, which tried to make it look like Fox was guilty of “sizism” for rejecting the original commercial, ends up looking guilty of “sizism” by running the parody.

It’s almost zen-like, isn’t it?

President Obama invited us to go to camp. Please try to control your jealousy

Although we were honored to be invited by the The Greatest President In History, we couldn’t work it into our busy schedules. No, we were far too busy cranking out extreme rightwing terrorist propaganda here at IHTM HQ.

Wall Street reform. Electing folks who will support the President and fight for change. Working for a clean-energy economy. Protecting the progress we’ve already made, while still fighting for more.

These are just some of the battles ahead.

Will you be there with us? As we continue fighting for the President’s agenda and gear up for the elections in the fall, we need to make sure we’re all ready to organize as effectively as possible.

So we’re holding Camp OFA training sessions across the country, to make sure that OFA supporters like you have the skills you’ll need to make it happen.

You’ll hear from local community organizers, volunteers, and staff on the best ways to organize local events and build neighborhood teams, how to make the case for the President’s agenda for change, and what OFA is planning to do in the months ahead.

There’s one near you in San Luis Obispo on Sunday, April 25th — can you RSVP to join us?

Here are the details:
What: Camp OFA 2010 Training

Where: IBEW Local Union 639
6363 Edna Rd
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

When: Sunday, April 25th
Start Time: 4:00 PM

If you can’t make it to that training, see if there are others in your area.

No prior experience with OFA is necessary, but you’ll leave fired up and ready to power legislative and electoral victories in the coming months.

We won a big victory on health insurance reform — and it was because of you. Now let’s keep it going, and win the fights ahead.

RSVP today to join us in San Luis Obispo on Sunday, April 25th:

Thanks,

Nicole

P.S. — Good news: Thanks in part to the tireless work of OFA volunteers like you in Florida, progressive champion Ted Deutch just won the first Congressional special election since health insurance reform passed.

You might want to sign up at Organizing For America, too, so you can get invited to future Obama Re-education Camps.

What could you and Tiger Woods have in common?

By now, you’ve probably seen or heard about the controversial Nike commercial that ran during Tiger’s “comeback” at the Masters. A creepy back-from-the-dead subconscious confrontation by Tiger’s philandering father: “Did you learn anything, Tiger?”

That’s the question asked on this poster at a mall in Southern California yesterday. That’s right. Yesterday.

LoveHateAdvertising (a cool new site run by one of our buddies and an occasional IHTM contributor) has the details:

Whatever it is, let’s hope it’s not contagious.

The captions almost write themselves. This ad used to be so innocent. So pedestrian. (It’s in an outdoor mall!)

Now because of circumstances beyond the advertiser’s control (Tiger’s lack of zipper control), the ad has taken on an unwanted double meaning.
It must be an old ad. It was up during the Masters tournament. It’s still up. (I just checked.)

Regime is a bad, bad word. Unless President Obama uses it in reference to the Bush administration.

Now wait just a damn second, Mr. President. We believed Matthews and all those other outraged libs when they told us “regime” is a bad word that must never be used.

President Obama talks to CNBC’s John Harwood about financial reform, raising taxes, and how Americans should think about Wall Street.

Everything’s going along just fine and then POW. At the 5:30 mark, Obama channels Chris Matthews and refers to “the Bush regime.”

Gay softball team sued for rejecting switch hitters

Three bisexual men are suing a national gay-athletic organization, saying they were discriminated against during the Gay Softball World Series for being “not gay.”

gay world series baseball
Gay shortstop settles into his position

Do they award Pulitzer Prizes for “Headline of the Year”? If they do, we’d like to say, “Thank you. Thank you very much.”

But let’s get on with the story from the Seattle Times:

Three bisexual men are suing a national gay-athletic organization, saying they were discriminated against during the Gay Softball World Series held in the Seattle area two years ago.

The three Bay Area men say the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance in essence deemed them not gay enough to participate in the series.

Not gay enough? Please explain.

The three plaintiffs — Steven Apilado, LaRon Charles and Jon Russ — played on a team called D2 that qualified for the 2008 Gay Softball World Series, which is organized by the alliance.

The alliance’s rules say that each World Series team can have no more than two heterosexual players. According to the lawsuit, a competing team accused D2 of violating that rule.

Each of the three plaintiffs was called into a conference room in front of more than 25 people, and was asked “personal and intrusive questions” about his sexual attractions and desires, purportedly to determine if the player was heterosexual or gay, the lawsuit alleges. The alliance has no category or definition for bisexual or transgender people in its rules, the plaintiff’s attorney said.

At one point during the proceedings, the lawsuit alleges, one of the plaintiffs was told: “This is the Gay World Series, not the Bisexual World Series.”

The alliance ruled the three men were “nongay,” stripped D2 of its second-place finish and recommended that the three players be suspended from participating in the World Series for a year, according to the suit.

The men are asking for $75,000 each for emotional distress. They’re also seeking to invalidate the alliance’s findings on the men’s sexual orientations and to reinstate D2’s second-place World Series finish.

Can’t we all just get along? After all, this is the only softball league in the world where every player looks forward to getting a groin pull. Where the squeeze plays happen in the dugout. Where every player wants to take one for the team. Where every player hits to the opposite field. Where the third base coach has a special sign for poking one up the middle. And, finally, where the manager has trouble putting together a line-up because half the players want to pitch and the other half want to catch.

Did we leave anything out?

Tea Party crashers crash and burn in Irvine, California

This report just in from our Orange County, California correspondent:

A couple of infiltrators showed up towards the end of a Non-Partisan Tax Day Tea Party rally in Irvine, California. It was pretty obvious they were hoping to make the rest of the attendees look bad by displaying their lack of taste for media cameras (Associated Press, LA Times and CBS were in attendance).

The “bebe” girl had an innocuous Palin-esque “hopey changey” sign, but her preppily-dressed escort looked particularly out of place with his huge vulgarism mounted on a stick.

After the picture was snapped, the two were quickly confronted by some members of the audience, then called out from the stage by the speaker, who called them “party crashers” and said they represented the face of the “left”.

They then beat a hasty retreat, exiting stage left.

Science explains Michael Moore: Newly discovered gene makes people fat and stupid

A variant of an obesity gene carried by more than a third of the U.S. population also reduces brain volume, raising carriers’ risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Michael Moore explained! It's a miracle of modern medical science!

This may sound like a story from the Onion, but it’s not. It’s real. And it goes a long way toward explaining Michael Moore.

A variant of an obesity gene carried by more than a third of the U.S. population also reduces brain volume, raising carriers’ risk of Alzheimer’s disease, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

People with a specific variant of the fat mass and obesity gene, or FTO gene, have brain deficits that could make them more vulnerable to the mind-robbing disease.

“The basic result is that this very prevalent gene not only adds an inch to your waistline, but makes your brain look 16 years older,” said Paul Thompson, a professor of neurology at the University of California Los Angeles, who worked on the study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Bottom line: This discovery gives the term “fat head” a whole new meaning.

In this clip, Chavez is seen ranting about the evil United States. Nothing unusual about that. But please notice the channel indicator in the upper right hand corner. It shows that Chavez is on every channel. No matter what channel Venezuelans turn to, here’s Hugo.

Even Obama hasn’t managed to pull that one off. Yet.

Oh, he tried. Remember when he pressured all the networks to carry his primetime press conferences? But Fox finally said balked and aired its regular programming. And there was nothing Obama could do about it.

Our young President apparently has a lot to learn from his muy bueno amigo.

Another idiot damn near freezes to death trying to prove global warming in the Arctic

Oh, my. How long has it been since we had a global warming lunatic who discovered that that Arctic isn’t nearly as warm as the hype lead him to believe?

The Ski Channel reports the frigid facts:

Tim Smitheringale is perhaps both the bravest and dumbest man we’ve ever encountered. The Australian was on his way to the North Pole, alone, when he fell through an ice sheet. He was close to death when he was miraculously rescued by Canadian soldiers.

His goal? To become the first Australian to reach the North Pole unassisted. He was only 186 miles away when the accident happened. He wrote on his website: “Had a bad fall into the ice today and came very close to the grave.”

The Sydney Morning Herald tells more tingling details:

Last week he almost quit after excruciating frostbite in his fingers and thumbs forced him to call in an emergency rescue.

Is Obama a closet Republican?

You’d be forgiven for thinking so if you read a recent article on Politico.com that says, “President Barack Obama took a swipe Saturday at top Senate Republicans for opposing a financial regulatory reform bill, accusing them of taking their cues from Wall Street special interests.”

He must be an evil Republican - he's owned by those even more evil Wall Streeters

You’d be forgiven for thinking so if you read a recent article on Politico.com that says, “President Barack Obama took a swipe Saturday at top Senate Republicans for opposing a financial regulatory reform bill, accusing them of taking their cues from Wall Street special interests.”

Problem is, it would be extremely difficult – if not damned impossible – to find a politician in Washington more in debt to Wall Street special interests than Barack Obama. To be specific, by the end of June, Wall Street had already given Obama $9.5 million.

Even liberals blush crimson at the thought of Greatest President In History’s campaign coffers overflowing with Wall Street money. An article on the Huffington Post titled “Goldman Sachs, Obama, Money” says “Goldman Sachs employees gave just shy of a million dollars to the Obama campaign, ranking second in contributions. Citigroup and JPMorgan ranked sixth and seventh. Goldman Sachs gave Obama four times more than they gave McCain.”

This is one big fat ugly chicken that is coming home to roost.

New York Times columnist David Brooks is appalled. “Over the past few years,” he writes, “people from Goldman Sachs have assumed control over large parts of the federal government. Over the next few they might just take over the whole darn thing.”

Closet Republican? Probably not. In fact, if speaking out of both sides of your mouth is a trait of Democratic politicians, Obama is the biggest Democrat ever.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs met with a delegation from the White House press corps for 75 minutes on Thursday in an effort to improve frayed relations between the two sides.

Ed Chen, a White House correspondent for Bloomberg News who is president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, said he asked for the meeting “to clear the air because in my 10-plus years at the White House, rarely have I sensed such a level of anger, which is wide and deep, among members over White House practices and attitude toward the press.”

Chen said he feels “very good about the collegial give and take.”

“We had a very good exchange with Robert,” Chen said. “He stayed overtime, and thus was late for his next meeting.”

Gibbs said the meeting in his West Wing office was “comprehensive and productive.”
