Fess Parker has gone to that big Alamo in the sky
Fess Parker, the lanky actor best known for playing Davy Crockett in the 1950s and Daniel Boone a decade later, died Thursday of natural causes. He was 85.
Breitbart.com said, “Family spokeswoman Sao Anash said Parker, who was also TV’s Daniel Boone and later a major California winemaker and developer, died at his Santa Ynez Valley home. His death comes on the 84th birthday of his wife of 50 years, Marcella.”
We pause now for a personal story from IHateTheMedia.com’s editor:
A few years ago we scheduled a weekend trip to California’s Napa Valley. Reservations were made at a lovely bed and breakfast that had been highly recommended.
About a week before our trip, we got a phone call from the manager of the B&B.
“You reserved our largest room,” she said, “which has an oversized bed. Would you be willing to switch rooms in order to accommodate a very tall guest who really needs the larger bed?” When we hesitated, she quickly told us that the guest was Fess Parker, who stood 6’ 6” tall even without his coonskin cap.
Fess Parker? Davy Crockett? My boyhood idol? Hell, yes. I agreed to switch rooms under one condition – that Fess sit next to me at breakfast the next morning.
It couldn’t have worked out better. Our room was perfect, Fess got a good night’s sleep in the larger bed, and then he entertained us with story after story the next morning at breakfast.
Rest in peace, Fess. May you have an oversized bed for eternity.
Chris Matthews is upset – very upset – that Bret Baier had the temerity to repeatedly interrupt the Greatest President In History during his Fox News interview.
Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. Funniest thing ever on MSNBC.
Chris Matthews is upset – very upset – that Bret Baier had the temerity to repeatedly interrupt the Greatest President In History during his Fox News interview.
At least Matthews is consistent. After all, this is a guy who never allows his guests to interrupt his questions with answers.
Yeah, that Chris Matthews.
But Matthews’ comments pale in comparison to the plums that come out of the mouths of guests Joan Walsh and Cynthia Tucker. Listen to the whole segment.
We never expect much from an government agency. In fact, when it comes to the Census Bureau, we’re just hoping it’s better at counting people than it is at counting money.
We're 3000% sure the Census Bureau is pissing away your tax dollars
We never expect much from an government agency. In fact, when it comes to the Census Bureau, we’re just hoping it’s better at counting people than it is at counting money.
Fox News tells the tale of incomparable counting incompetence:
The U.S. Census is well into conducting its constitutionally mandated 2010 count but the exercise is already running over budget.
Taxpayers are footing the bill of $14.7 billion for 10 years of Census counting. That price tag supports 500 local offices and a peak staff of 1.4 million workers.
But some cost overruns have already plagued this Census, like when tens of thousands of workers fanned out between March and July of last year to verify addresses — a process known as “address canvassing.” The Census Bureau, federal auditors later found, ran 25 percent over budget for a total cost of $444 million.
“When I arrived in July, the findings of that overrun were just emerging,” Census Director Robert Groves said. “There was an underestimation of just the workload — how many houses we had to go to.”
Auditors also found the Census Bureau provided training to some 15,000 workers who either worked not at all or less than a single day — at a total cost of $5.5 million.
It was either that or 5.5 million workers at a cost of $15,000. The Census Bureau isn’t sure which.
No one was harder on the Wall Street tycoons who took bonuses with their bailouts than the New York Times.
Why then would a foundering newspaper with plunging ad sales and subscriptions pay its lackluster Chief Executive Officer a multimillion-dollar bonus? Because bias and hypocrisy are what the New York Times stands for.

New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson was paid about $4.9 million in total compensation in 2009, that includes a bonus of about $2.3 million. Sweet.
Oh, and remember how the NYT used to bitch about stock options of all those corporate fat cats? Robinson’s stock options were worth around $1.6 million.
And in other news, while Robinson reaped the million-dollar riches for leading the shaky New York Times, the paper plans to cut over a hundred news room jobs.
Hey, they have to find money to pay Robinson somewhere and it might as well be in the news room. The Times doesn’t need to find news when they can make it up all by themselves.
We’ve been out of town for a couple days and apparently missed the story about that horrible Hawaiian earthquake.
President Obama told Fox News’ Bret Baier that he supports “The Louisiana Purchase” in Obamacare because it will cover natural disasters like the recent Hawaiian earthquake.

President Obama told Fox News’ Bret Baier that he supports “The Louisiana Purchase” in Obamacare because it will cover natural disasters like the recent Hawaiian earthquake.
Obama: It also affects Hawaii, which went through an earthquake. So that’s not just a Louisiana provision. That is a provision that affects every state that is going through a natural catastrophe.
Of course, there’s been no devastating Hawaiian earthquake. Did he mean Haiti? Or Chile? Or has he given up cigarettes and returned to the wacky tabacky?
South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham thinks the Democrats are drunk. Or even worse. Here’s what the wobby Republican had to say about the Slaughter Strategy.
South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham thinks the Democrats are drunk. Or even worse. Here’s what the wobby Republican had to say about the Slaughter Strategy:
“They’re trying to use a process that is sleazy, it’s unfair, it’s a trick play. They’re trying to have a health care bill passed without voting on it. So my comments really reflect the fanaticism of the Democratic leadership, and I don’t know whether sake or moonshine, but no sober person would do this.”
The concept of drinking Democrats isn’t all that far-fetched as you can see here and here and here and here.
The Democrats obviously miss Teddy Kennedy’s unsteady hand. If they’re going to drink, he would have been their natural leader.
Joe Biden is the gift that keeps on giving. He’s a walking, talking (mostly talking) punch line.
During a White House celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, Vice President Joe Biden asked for God’s blessing for the late mother of Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen. That was very thoughtful of Biden except for one thing. The woman is still alive.

“Stand up, Chuck, let ‘em see you. Oh, what am I talking about?”
Make MSNBC’s Chris Matthews the latest liberal to jump on the Slaughter Strategy dog pile.
It’s not like Matthews thinks Deem and Pass is unethical or even unconstitutional. No, not at all. He’s merely worried that this convoluted Parliamentary procedure will cost the Democrats dearly in 2010 and 2012.

It was just announced that the President Obama’s trip has been canceled. Expect celebrations to break out in Jakarta.
Indonesians demonstrating their love for President Obama
UPDATE: It was just announced that the President’s trip has been canceled. Expect celebrations to break out in Jakarta.
To go or not to go, that is the question.
Should President Obama delay his Indonesian trip to satisfy House Democrats? Or should he cancel is completely to satisfy protesting Indonesians?
Politico reports on the House Democrats:
Last week, the president pushed back his planned Friday departure three days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats groused he was leaving at a critical time.
“For the first time in eight months, the president is finally getting his hands dirty, and now he’s going to hop on the plane? Please,” said a Democratic congressman, requesting anonymity.
“These deadlines are sort of silly,” the member added. “Remember the first one? March 18th? That was sort of like putting a calendar on [White House chief of staff] Rahm’s [Emanuel’s] back and inviting members to throw darts at him.”
Another Democrat told POLITICO bluntly, “This trip is really getting in the way of things.”
Ahhh, but if the Democrats think they’re pissed off about Obama’s Indonesian trip, they should talk to some Indonesians.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports the other end of the story:
Thousands of Indonesian Muslims have staged peaceful rallies in cities across the country to protest US President Barack Obama’s visit later this month.
Around 2,000 protesters from the hardline Muslim group Hizbut Tahrir, which aims to establish a Muslim caliphate, shouted “Islam united… will not be defeated. Reject Obama” and tore printouts of the American flag as they marched around the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar on Sunday.
In Central Java’s Solo city, another 500 of the group’s supporters carried posters saying “Expel Obama.. leader of coloniser” and “America.. The Real Terrorists”.
“There are two types of visitors, good and bad. Obama is bad. He might be of a different skin colour from George Bush, but he still oppressed the Muslims,” the group’s spokesman Nur Alam said, referring to former US president George W. Bush.
Hey, wait just a second. Didn’t Obama apologize to the Muslim world? We thought they love us now.
There’s only one way to solve this problem, President Obama. Go over there to Indonesia and give them another speech. Because that approach has worked sooooo well for you on ObamaCare.
Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Howard Stern feels the pulse of a segment of the American people. The raunchy radio star typically leans to the left, but Barack Obama has change all that.

Let’s just give you the highlights of Jack Cafferty’s attack on Nancy Pelosi and the whole damn reconciliation process
Let’s just give you the highlights of Jack Cafferty’s attack on Nancy Pelosi and the whole damn reconciliation process:
Just when you think you’ve seen it all in Washington, along comes something like this… Politically speaking, this is beyond sleazy… In Nancy Pelosi’s world, accountability is a dirty word… Republicans are jumping all over this, rightfully so. They’re painting it as a way for Democrats to avoid taking responsibility, which is exactly what it is… We’re learning a lot more about lack of political guts… This reeks!
Uh-oh. No matter whether the bill goes up or down, Obama and the Democrats are going down.

OK, so maybe we’re nitpicking. But if she’s going to continue lecturing us about childhood obesity and the evils of fast food, maybe she should remember that old saying about glass houses.

Cindy Sheehan is about to start another anti-war camp. This one will be in Washington, and it could conceivably last for months.
Famed war protester and fashion icon Cindy Sheehan
Poor Cindy Sheehan. She was the liberal media darling when she protested all of George Bush’s supposed misdeeds. But now that she’s protesting Barack Obama’s war machine, the daft old dear is finding reporters and news cameras in very short supply.
Cindy Sheehan is about to start another anti-war camp. This one will be in Washington, and it could conceivably last for months. The problem?
“I’m kind of over the whole camping thing,” she admits.
It’s a fair enough statement for Sheehan, who gained international attention in 2005 for “Camp Casey,” a five-week protest outside of then-President George W. Bush’s Crawford, Texas, ranch during which she demanded a meeting with the commander in chief to hear an explanation for her son Casey’s death in Iraq. She spent most of that time in a ditch on the side of a road leading to the president’s grounds.
Five years and a new president later, however, Sheehan will be sleeping under the stars again, and for the same cause. Her new coalition, Peace of the Action, is launching the Camp OUT NOW! tent city at the base of the Washington Monument next week in an effort to get President Barack Obama to pull troops out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan immediately. (Sheehan concedes that this time around, she will rent a bedroom in which to store her belongings, take showers and occasionally sleep.)
She’s protesting Barack Obama? We’ll watch for all those engrossing Cindy Sheehan updates that are sure to air on the nightly news.
In all the hullabaloo about Obama’s 3000% comment, everyone missed this little gem from the same speech: “And she upped her deductible last year to the minimum [sic], the highest possible deductible.”
ObamaCare will raise federal tax rates to 50-60%, says Jim Cramer. So what’s your point, Cramer? Isn’t that exactly what this whole exercise is all about?

WebEcoist.com reports the Southern Hemisphere’s hemoglobic happenings:
The waters beneath Taylor’s Glacier are a kind of ancient time capsule where a community of microorganisms was able to develop and evolve in an environment not found anywhere else on Earth. When the lake was trapped under the glacier some 1.5 – 2 million years ago, some simple life forms were trapped in it. The subglacial lake contains no oxygen, but is home to at least 17 different types of microorganisms. The water is hyper-salinated (very salty), and its unusual coloring is due to its high iron content, which instantly rusts upon being exposed to air outside of its closed-in origin, creating the blood red waterfall. The strange and inhospitable conditions in the subglacial lake had led researchers to wonder just how all of those microorganisms could have survived in the extremely cold, airless, completely dark environment for so long.
No, it’s not natural. It’s not. It’s caused by man, damn it. Man is making the planet bleed. And the only way to stop it is to raise taxes and make Al Gore even richer.

We’re not quite sure what to make of all this.

MediaBistro.com reports the chilling details:
CNN’s saw its worst primetime averages in a year as its primetime programs hit ratings lows.
… In February’s total day and primetime demo, CNN finished in fifth place for the first time ever, behind FNC, MSNBC, HLN, and CNBC. (Note: Includes Olympic coverage.)
“Campbell Brown” and “AC360” saw their lowest total viewers since their launch, and “Larry King Live” saw its lowest in at least 13 years. In the demo, it was Cooper’s lowest rated month ever and it was the second lowest rated months for King and Brown. CNN’s primetime was down -54% in total viewers (-57% demo) from last year. The biggest decrease of any network.
Competitively, CNN topped MSNBC in total day and daytime hours, but CNN was also down in total day compared to last year (-35% in total viewers and -40% in the demo).
In its first full-month since launching, “Rick’s List” averaged 560k total viewers and 111k in the demo, which is down -43% and -52% respectively in the time slot from last year.
Say good night, Campbell. Say good night, Larry. Say good night, Rick. Say good night, Cooper.
