Revenge for the Opium Wars: China treats the U.S. like a drug dealer teasing a pathetic junkie

Todd Stern, President Barack Obama’s special envoy on climate change, tried to sound optimistic when the US delegation ended its China visit but could hardly conceal that little had been achieved

Sad to say, that's us, squatting in some squalid alley getting our daily fix of Chinese money.
Sad to say, that's us, squatting in some squalid alley getting our daily fix of Chinese money.

The Obama administration just concluded climate negotiations with China. No breakthroughs were achieved, but at least both nations now understand their respective roles:

China is the drug dealer, America is the junkie. They have the really good stuff we want: money. Just like any good drug dealer, they got us hooked with cheap prices, but now that we’re addicted the price they demand is going up.

Here’s how the Financial Times reports the results of the Obama administration’s recent climate negotiations with China:

Todd Stern, President Barack Obama’s special envoy on climate change, tried to sound optimistic when the US delegation ended its China visit but could hardly conceal that little had been achieved…

Chinese officials maintained that the two countries should have a “common but differentiated approach” – code for Beijing’s reluctance to adopt a formal domestic mandate to reduce its carbon emissions. The US Congress is considering a bill that would reduce US emissions to 83 per cent of 2005 levels by 2020. China wants the US to cut its emissions to 40 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 – a different order of magnitude. It also wants the US to pledge up to 1 per cent of its gross domestic product to pay for clean technology in China and elsewhere.

Read that again. The Chinese want us to cripple American industry with carbon emission regulations from which they’ll be exempt. Then they want us to pay them 1% of our GDP to give the latest technology to their industries.

Sadly enough, we’ll probably do it because we’re addicted to their money. And like any good junkie, we’ll steal to feed our habit. Unfortunately, we’re stealing from our children and grandchildren.

Media goes hog wild over swine flu: Millions die

Do you know how many people have actually died of swine flu worldwide in the last two months (according to the World Health Organization)?

You cannot protect yourself from Media Flu simply by covering your mouth. You must also cover your eyes and ears.
You cannot protect yourself from Media Flu simply by covering your mouth. You must also cover your eyes and ears.

In the two months since the first case of swine flu popped up in Mexico on April 13, we’ve been inundated with media reports regarding our imminent demise.

They said we’re all going to get it. We’re all going to die. Borders were closed. People were quarantined. Trade was halted. We desperately need billions of dollars in research grants. We need a vaccine to keep us from going the way of the dinosaurs. It’s the greatest health disaster since 20,000,000 people died of the Spanish Flu of 1918. Oh, the humanity.

Let’s get back to reality now. Do you know how many people have actually died of swine flu worldwide in the last two months (according to the World Health Organization)?

A. 1,440,000
B. 144,000
C. 14,400
D. 1440
E. 144

ANSWER: If you chose E, you are correct. A grand total of just 144 people have died of Swine Flu worldwide. In contrast, WHO says the three main strains of flu cause somewhere between 250,000 to 500,000 deaths a year globally. That’s somewhere between 685 and 1370 per day.

Obviously, it’s much easier to fall victim to Media Flu than Swine Flu. But Swine Flu is easier to cure and much less deadly.

A tale of two presidents: Reagan inspired the people of Poland, Obama sells out the people of Iran

Ronald Reagan knew how to inspire the people of Poland in 1981, unlike Barack Obama, who is selling out the people of Iran in 2009.

Here’s what Ronald Reagan said in 1981 when the people of Poland revolted against their autocratic rulers:

Today they erect statues honoring Ronald Reagan in Poland.
Today they erect statues honoring Ronald Reagan in Poland.

The Polish nation, speaking through Solidarity, has provided one of the brightest, bravest moments of modern history. The people of Poland are giving us an imperishable example of courage and devotion to the values of freedom in the face of relentless opposition. Left to themselves, the Polish people would enjoy a new birth of freedom. But there are those who oppose the idea of freedom, who are intolerant of national independence, and hostile to the European values of democracy and the rule of law.

Two Decembers ago, freedom was lost in Afghanistan; this Christmas, it’s at stake in Poland. But the torch of liberty is hot. It warms those who hold it high. It burns those who try to extinguish it.

Here’s what Barack Obama said in 2009 when the people of Iran protested a fraudulent election:

“It’s not productive given the history of U.S.-Iranian relations to be seen as meddling.”

Way to go, Mr. President. You put the fear of God into the theocracy with that one.

Do as Barack Obama says, not as Barack Obama does

Obama tells you what not to smoke, what not to drink, and what not to eat, but is no role model. He smokes, drinks and eats the wrong things.

Obama 2008

In another blatant example of the Obama administration’s “Do as I say, not as I do” Policy, the President wants to give the government a central role in determining your diet. We call it butting in where the government doesn’t belong, but health experts call it a new era of activism.

According to the Politico:

obama_smoking

The president is filling top posts at Health and Human Services with officials who, in their previous jobs, outlawed trans fats, banned public smoking or required restaurants to provide a calorie count with that slice of banana cream pie.

Even Congress is getting into the act, giving serious consideration to taxing sugary drinks and alcohol to help pay for the overhaul.

To some, it smacks of a “nanny state on steroids” — but for others who fret that America is turning into one big Overeaters Anonymous meeting, Obama’s prescription is like a low-fat dream come true.

“He has expressed more interest in preventing diseases and promoting health than any previous president. It is not a breath of fresh air. It is a tornado,” said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “That contrast is breathtaking. This is really a rare opportunity to make progress on so many issues.”

obama_beerSo when they tell you what not to smoke, what not to drink, and what not to eat, keep these photos in mind.

Then smoke what you want, drink what you want, eat what you want. And in 2010, vote for what you want.

Good news for terrorists: No longer necessary to kill yourself to get to into paradise

Former Guantanamo detainees are now living it up in Bermuda and Palau. They’re sleeping late, dining out, and living in a lovely beachfront house. Undoubtedly on your dime.

Earlier this week we learned that 13 of the Chinese Uighur terrorists from Gitmo had been “resettled” on the tropical paradise of Palau. Now we learn that four more of them have been “resettled” in Bermuda. (“Resettled,” of course, is a travel industry term that means “treated like you’d like to be treated on the vacation you’ll never be able to afford”).

Yes, four former Guantanamo detainees (otherwise known as enemy combatants) are now living it up in Bermuda. They’re sleeping late, dining out, and living in a lovely beachfront house. Undoubtedly on your dime.

Next thing you know, some genius in the Obama administration will drop a load of terrorists in Bora Bora, thinking that it must be a lot like Tora Bora.

Al Gore to be sued for fraud by coalition of 30,000 scientists?

Al Gore says the science is settled. Now let’s see if the lawsuit is settled.

John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, has put together a coalition of more than 30,000 scientists who don’t buying Gore’s global warming baloney.

Gore won’t debate the issue because he says “the science is settled.” So Coleman thinks his courtroom ploy may give him a chance to expose Gore’s folly.

“We have tried and tried and tried to get a debate on global warming with…Al Gore and any of the scientists behind him over at the UN IPCC,” Coleman said. “We’d love to have a debate with them, but they go ‘Oh, no, the debate is over.’ Well, now there are 30,000 of us. We have 30,000 scientists – 9000 Phds – who have signed up to debunk global warming. And they still won’t listen to us…So we figure maybe a court of law.”

We say bring on the law suit and let Al Gore be judged by a jury of his peers.

The only problem will be finding 12 other pompous, bloated rip-off artists willing to serve on the jury.

Australian newspaper editor viciously attacks Sarah Palin’s commencement address

Sarah Palin commencement address

Tim Blair of the Sydney Daily Telegraph recently wrote this scathing attack on Sarah Palin. It needs to be read by every American voter. Please make sure you read all the way to the end to see the viscous, horrible thing Blair says about this speech.

THE world trembled last year as a terrible prospect loomed: the next vice-president of the United States might be a complete moron…intelligent people everywhere were relieved when Palin’s White House bid failed. But what if John McCain and his dimwitted running mate had been elected? Right now we’d be listening to some of the most spectacularly stupid speeches ever made.

Speeches such as a commencement address at North Carolina’s Wake Forest University earlier this month, for example. Let’s imagine how Palin might have handled it…

“Thank you very much. I say to all the faculty, this will be painless. They have felt like – I suspect they’ve heard a hundred – all the commencements since the beginning of the school.”

The “they” to whom Palin refers is unclear. Is she saying that the faculty feels like an abundance of speeches?

“I had planned on driving my ‘67 Corvette up the middle of this area here. But the Secret Service said they wouldn’t let me do it.”

Such callous disregard for the environment would be typical of an ignorant woman who shoots moose and wants to drill Alaska for oil.

“Well, I love today and one of the reasons I do is because of all of you. I believe so strongly, as you may recall when I was here in October, not in you particularly but your generation…”

She doesn’t believe in the students?

“I don’t have a single doubt in my mind we’re on the cusp not only of a new century but a new day for this country and the world.”

It’s 2009. We’re eight entire years past the cusp.

“You’re about to graduate into a point in history where everything is going to change no matter what you do, but you can affect the change.”

That’s reassuring. The next generation are a bunch of change changers. Potentially, changed change means everything stays the same. Keep going, Mrs VP:

“Throughout the span of history though, only a handful of us have been alive at times when we can truly shape history. Without question, this is one of those times…”

And only a handful of people are alive. Just 6,800,000,000 or so – more than at any other time in history.

“We’re either going to revive and reverse climate change, or literally drown in our indifference.”

Why would anyone want to revive climate change? These are the words of a madwoman. Also, as for “literally drowning”, the campus at which we’re locating this speech is nearly 300m above sea level. Residents would be safe from drowning even if every bit of ice on earth was melted.

“Non-action is action, unlike most generations.”

How much ice is in that gin Palin’s drinking?

“There’s not a single issue on this President’s plate that will not yield a change – just merely by ignoring it, it will change.”

She’s really losing it. And remember, Palin is but a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

“Remember your physics class? You’re driving along in an automobile and you move the wheel slightly to the left or right, and you send the car careening in the direction that absent another change will end up a significant distance from where you were aimed.”

My car always goes exactly where I aim it. What kind of comedy opposite-steering clown cars do they drive in Alaska?

“When I graduated, all had not changed utterly yet. Today, it has. And in the last 12 to 15 years, a terrible beauty has been born. It’s a different world out there than it has been any time in the last millennia.”

Now she sounds like someone on an oxycontin bender. Some more details on this “terrible beauty” that was born in 1997 or 1994 would be helpful (Bruce Willis’s daughter Tallulah?), but crazy Sarah has already moved on.

“So embrace the moment. Don’t shy away from it. You know how I feel. I’m confident you must feel the same way.”

Hand over some of that oxycontin and you might be right.

“It is to not sustain – we know we cannot sustain the way we’re going now. So it’s time to steel our spines, and embrace the promise of change, even though we cannot guarantee exactly what that change will bring.”

More reassurance.

“In the past, it’s always been older generations, my generation speaking – standing up here at commencements telling the next generation the ways of the world … Well, graduate, I’ll have to admit, it’s a lot different today. You’ve flipped the script, as you might say. You’re, quite simply, teaching us.”

Someone has to. Did Dan Quayle ever deliver a speech that maintained this level of incoherence for so long?

“You are the possible. That is not hyperbole. You are the possible. We are the possible.”

It isn’t hyperbole. It also isn’t anything close to making sense. You’ve just been reading a speech delivered on May 18 by US vice President Joe Biden.

Damn, we love Tim Blair. You should read his blog every day like we do.

How to help the Iranian Revolution through Twitter

A guide to helping the Iranian protesters in Iran so you do not harm the Iranian protesters by doing things on Twitter that can give away locations of people tweeting and otherwise communicating to us from within Iran, or spread other information that could play into the hands of the Iranian government.

There are several tweets per second regarding Iran on Twitter right now. You can catch what going on at either:

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=iranelection

or

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=gr88

It’s inspiring, sad, angering and confusing. But it’s history unfolding in front of your very eyes. It very well could be the first revolution aided by social networks, in particular Twitter.

But make sure you do not harm the Iranian protesters by doing things on Twitter that can give away locations of people tweeting and otherwise communicating to us from within Iran, or spread other information that could play into the hands of the Iranian government.

Here are some rules of the road:

  1. Use only hashtags #iranelection and #gr88. These are the only ones most people are following.
  2. Change your Twitter setting to say your location is Tehran and you time zone is GMT +3:30 so there become way too many people for security forces to monitor.
  3. Do not tweet proxy IP addresses as government forces are monitoring tweets. Those that know how to send the proxies to them are doing so. If you are creating new proxies for our Iranian friends, DM them to @stopAhmadi or @iran09 for distribution. Otherwise they will be immediately blocked.
  4. Do not retweet the names/handles of sources from within Iran! Don’t name them anywhere, on a site, in an email, nowhere. You could cause their death.
  5. Don’t believe everything you read and automatically retweet, especially regrading locations, as government forces are now tweeting false information to hunt and trap people.

By the way, we just heard a report of a group of 500 security forces turning sides. We can only hope and pray this is true.

Note: If you have any other things we should cover, place a comment here and we’ll update the list with it.

Hilarious: Eco-wackos sobbing like little girls over trees

Video of Earth First environmental lunacy in its full glory as they cry over trees.

The folks at Earth First has always been lunatics. But here’s a video clip that demonstrates that environmental lunacy in its full glory.

“I want to mourn the loss of all the old growth trees I’m seeing and tell them that we love them and that we don’t want them to die and that there are people here who do care. So I want you to know that, trees, that we care.”

You’ll love the sniveling, the sobbing, the wailing and the weeping. And the primal scream is pretty funny, too.

Bill Maher rips The One a new one

What are we to think when unhinged leftist Bill Maher turns on President Obama?

What are we to think when unhinged leftist Bill Maher turns on President Obama?

From the first line of his Friday night rant (“President Obama should just join the cast of “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!” It’s not that farfetched; he’s been on everything else.”) to the last (“I’m glad that Obama is president, but the ‘Audacity of Hope’ part is over. Right now, I’m hoping for a little more audacity.”), Maher rips The One a new one.

Of course, Maher’s real complaint is that Obama hasn’t been socialist enough fast enough. But still, he manages to compare him unfavorably to both President Bush and Lindsay Lohan.

This may be the first and only time we ever recommend watching Maher. So enjoy it.

Remember when Presidents announced things like “National Mom and Apple Pie Month” and “National Flag Month”? Well, those days are gone.

President Obama has proudly, but oh-so-quietly declared June “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.”

“In a difficult-to-find declaration posted on the White House Web site on June 1,” the Christian Post notes, “Obama praised LGBT Americans for their continual ‘great and lasting contributions’ that ‘strengthen the fabric of American society.’”

“Obama follows in the footsteps of former President Bill Clinton,” the Post continues, “who also issued a similar proclamation in 1999 and 2000. But Clinton did not use the term transgender in his version. He did, however, reference bisexuals. President George W. Bush, in contrast, did not issue any LGBT proclamation during his eight years in office.”

What about black midgets elves? What about left-handed native Eskimo barbers? What about cross-eyed albino terrorists?

For god’s sake, President Obama, do the right thing and give these oppressed minorities the national months they so richly deserve.

World Health Organization suffers because too few people are dying of swine flu

It’s panic time at the World Health Organization. Avian flu flopped. And SARS generated more headlines than deaths. WHO wants a pandemic. It needs a pandemic. So it got a pandemic even if it’s a phony one.

But what’s a blood-sucking bureaucracy supposed to do when its funding depends on fear and their best and brightest hopes for human death sputter out?

Michael Fumento explains:

In 2005 (WHO) rewrote the definition of “influenza pandemic,” which formerly required “enormous numbers of deaths and illness.” Under its new definition, a handful of cases and zero deaths can nonetheless constitute a “pandemic.” And that’s pretty much what we’ve seen. The term “influenza pandemic” has simply lost any truly useful meaning.

Thanks, WHO, for putting politics and self-interest above the interests of public health.

“WHO lied. No one died.”

More bumper sticker material from the day’s real news.

New Chrysler car designed to pound your tax dollars down a rat hole

This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004. The 21% calling themselves liberal is in line with findings throughout this decade, but is up from the 1990s.”

News Update: Jimmy Carter is still an idiot

The former President had this to say about Mahmoud Achmadinejad and the “election” in Iran: “I think this election has bought out a lot of opposition to his policies in Iran, and I’m sure he’ll listen to those opinions and hopefully moderate his position.”

If you’re going to fly around the world observing elections, shouldn’t you be a little more observant? Here’s a video that shows you exactly how Mahmoud is listening to his people – with nightsticks.

Can someone explain the Chastity Bono situation to us?

Chastity Bono is a lesbian. Her girlfriend is another lesbian. But now Chastity’s having a sex change surgery. Seriously, if the girlfriend stays with the new Chastity-man (as she’s already announced she will), doesn’t that mean she’s now straight?

We readily admit that we’re just not smart enough to figure this out.

The Situation: Chastity Bono is a lesbian. Her girlfriend is another lesbian. But now Chastity’s having a sex change surgery.

The Question: After Chastity becomes a man, will her lesbian lover still be a lesbian?

Seriously, if the girlfriend stays with the new Chastity-man (as she’s already announced she will), doesn’t that mean she’s now straight? Haven’t we been told that a person can’t change their sexual orientation? Doesn’t that fly directly in the fact of that assertion?

Figure this one out and you probably qualify for a Nobel Prize of some sort.

We’re just not sure what category.

GM invested $25 million in the 33,000-square-foot Global Battery Systems Lab to develop and test the drivetrains underpinning the Chevrolet Volt and other hybrid, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The automaker believes the facility, at its sprawling Warren Technical Center campus outside Detroit, Michigan, will help make it a market leader in battery and EV technology.

So far, so good. But here’s where it gets a little iffy:

The lab also features a thermal shaker table for testing the structural integrity of each pack and a battery tear-down workshop for failure analysis and reverse-engineering competitors’ batteries.

Please allow us to translate: We gave GM billions of dollars so they could rip off good ideas from the entrepreneurs and companies who helped contributed to their bail out.

Perfect. Just friggin’ perfect.
