Morning Joe replaces Red Eye as the funniest program on television

Don’t miss the comedy stylings of Mika Mxyzptlk, co-host of the Morning Joe show

Mika Mxyzptlk, co-host of the Morning Joe show on MSNBC is one seriously funny chick. As a result of her hilarious ad libs, Morning Joe is giving Red Eye some serious competition in the comedy department.

NewsBusters reports the hilarity:

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Monday’s Morning Joe on MSNBC, noting that it was President’s Day, host Joe Scarborough asked the day’s panel members who was their favorite President. After the first two guests named Abraham Lincoln, to which co-host Mika Brzezinski agreed, she then announced her admiration for Jimmy Carter’s post-presidential activities calling him her “favorite former President.” She went on to call him the “best former President we’ve ever had,” prompting Scarborough to quip, “You should be paid.”

After Willie Geist poked fun at Brzezinski by declaring that Jimmy Carter was the best President because of “his bravery against that killer rabbit in Plains, Georgia,” Brzezinski sulked: “Stop mocking him.”

C’mon, man, praise for Jimmy Carter is gut-busting funny. She’s funnier than Chris Rock and Robin Williams put together. Of course, Chris Rock and Robin Williams haven’t been funny in years, so that comparison is really unfair to MSNBC’s new queen of comedy.

Say what? Obama calls on MSNBC to give his press conference “balance”

President Obama thought he could add some “balance” to his most recent press conference by calling on MSNBC.

According to a recent poll, FOX News is the most “trusted name in news,” no matter what CNN’s advertising department might say.

Yet somehow the President Obama thought he could add some “balance” to his most recent press conference by calling on MSNBC.

We’re just afraid that Obama’s version of balance means the previous question came from someone so liberal that MSNBC only seemed conservative by comparison.

They’ve done it again: Another week of record low ratings for Olbermann, Maddow and Schultz

To put it bluntly, the week of February 1 – 5 was an unmitigated disaster at MSNBC.

Sssssh! Don't wake up Keith Olbermann's last viewer.

Just when you start to think MSNBC can’t sink any lower in the ratings, those lunatic liberals surprise you by doing it again.

To put it bluntly, the week of February 1 – 5 was an unmitigated disaster at MSNBC.

Schultz’ total audience for the week was only 2,402,000 viewers. Maddow’s total viewers for a full week fell under 4,000,000 for the first time (3,922,000).

On top of that, Keith Olbermann’s audience, which once neared 1,500,000 viewers per night, fell under 1,000,000 viewers four of the five nights.

In an effort to demonstrate our commitment to a greener world, we hereby request that MSNBC’s last viewer turn out the lights on their way out the door.

NBC’s Chuck Todd says Fox News trying to undermine the credibility of mainstream media. What credibility?

Chuck Todd, NBC’s political director and chief White House correspondent really didn’t like it when Fox News Washington managing editor Bill Sammon appeared on Fox News Sunday and said, “…the mainstream media hates the tea party movement almost as much as it hates Sarah Palin.”

Chuck Todd, NBC’s political director and chief White House correspondent really didn’t like it when Fox News Washington managing editor Bill Sammon appeared on Fox News Sunday and said, “…the mainstream media hates the tea party movement almost as much as it hates Sarah Palin.”

Now any rational person would say that statement is inarguable. Nevertheless, Todd chose to argue the inarguable on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Todd: We all know there are a lot of different ways people get news. And then you have straight journalists, you have activist journalists, you have opinion folks. And we know that they’re all out there. I think we believe here at NBC that people are smart enough to figure it out. And that’s why when a news executive goes out there and states a crazy accusation like that, that it ends up, it only ends up probably hurting what they’re trying to do, but it creates, it only denigrates all of us.

. . .

And I’m sorry, there is certain news organizations out here whose agenda is to undermine the 90% of journalists who are just simply trying to cover stories out there. And that’s what really frustrates me about what’s happened in the media landscape. It is a business for some media organizations to undermine the quote-unquote the mainstream media because it’s good for their business. And this is not just on the right, it’s happening on the left as well.

Pardon us while we laugh.

MSNBC is surely the wrong place to make this argument, Chuck. The ratings-challenged network is doing an admirable job undermining itself with absolutely no assistance from Fox.

America sick of Olbermann schtick: His ratings are down 44% since last year

Remember a year or so ago when Keith Olbermann bragged about his ratings on the air? Don’t expect to see a replay of that show anytime soon.

Keith Olbermann's audience is abandoning him like he's a baby girl in China

Remember a year or so ago when Keith Olbermann bragged about his ratings on the air? Don’t expect to see a replay of that show anytime soon.

Daily Finance reports the details:

Keith Olbermann was already a renowned sportscaster when he rose to prominence as a political commentator. This was during the Bush Administration, when the left was badly in need of a forceful voice to rally around. Such was his popularity that MSNBC reoriented its entire primetime lineup around it.

But now the Democrats control Congress and the White House, and there are creeping indications that the world may not have quite as much need of — or patience for — Olbermann and his shtick as it once did.

Ratings for Olbermann’s Countdown have been soft recently, and the 8 p.m. shows on CNN and HLN have narrowed the gap. In the important demographic of adults 25 to 54 — the group advertisers are looking to reach — Countdown was down 44% year-over-year in January. It averaged 268,000 viewers in that demo, only 3,000 more than Nancy Grace’s show on HLN, and 12,000 more than CNN’s Campbell Brown. Fox News’s O’Reilly Factor dominated the hour with 964,000 viewers age 25 to 54, and was the only cable news show in the time period to increase its audience, by 55%.

Olbermann can console himself with the fact that he still has highest ratings at MSNBC. Of course, that’s kind of like bragging that you’re the tallest Munchkin.

Delusional Keith Olbermann defends his rapidly eroding ratings

The delusional Keith Olbermann seems outraged – absolutely outraged – that several media outlets said his program is in danger of being cancelled due to low ratings.

The delusional Keith Olbermann seems outraged – absolutely outraged – that several media outlets said his program is in danger of being canceled due to low ratings.

He refuted the vile rumor that his ratings are spiraling downward at an ever-increasing rate.

“First the small picture on how conservatives come to believe the crazy, nonsensical, totally fact-free things they believe,” Olbermann said. “How they transform discernible, provable lies into their wishful thinking version of the truth.” He then insisted that stories of his plummeting ratings are a figment of conservatives’ imaginations and even bragged that the program’s audience has grown.

Just one problem. OIbermann is flat-out lying. His ratings are going down. Big time. For example, here’s a comparison of Thursday, February 5 of this year and Thursday, February 4 of last year.

Of course, we know critics will say, “Well, sure, but one night doesn’t prove anything.” To which we say, “Shut the hell up, morons. These numbers are pretty damn indicative of the overall trends.”

Network/Host                   2-5-2009         2-4-2010
Fox, O’Reilly                        3,839,000          4,176,000
CNN, Brown                         1,497,000            585,000
MSNBC, Olbermann              1,475,000            917,000
HLN, Grace                          1,285,000            967,000

Bottom line: Olbermann’s audience is rapidly dwindling away, no matter how he chooses to spin it otherwise.

As the chart shows, a year ago his total audience often approached 1,500,000 viewers (on Thursday, February 5, 2009 it was 1,475,000). This year it usually comes in under 1,000,000 total viewers (on Thursday, February 4, 2010 it was a mere 917,000).

Obviously, the same math used by the President to explain how ObamaCare won’t grow the deficit is being used by Olbermann to explain how his ratings are growing instead of shrinking. And we suspect the same math is also being used to explain the number of jobs created or saved and maybe even how the world is heating instead of cooling.

Aha! It’s Lib Math. It all makes sense now.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews has recovered from his election night depression and is now attacking anyone who continues to be as blind as he once was.

That includes delusional Congressman Alan Grayson (D-NeverNeverLand), who says Democrats can still pass ObamaCare via the reconciliation maneuver.
“You know you can’t do it,” Matthews responds. “You’re pandering to the netroots right now. I know what you’re doing.”

Matthews is hilarious. He’s like a jilted lover who now hates everything about the woman he used to worship.

Chris Matthews says he forgot Obama is black, doesn’t mention if he forgot Obama is red

We’re not sure what Matthews thought Obama may have become, since he’s constantly reminded us for the last year that Obama is America’s first black president and that’s the only reason conservatives don’t like him. But that’s what the MSNBC host said.

BBC to show movie made by chimpanzees. Can MSNBC be far behind?

The once much-revered British Broadcasting Corporation has not only gone to the dogs, it’s now gone ape.

The once much-revered British Broadcasting Corporation has not only gone to the dogs, it’s now gone ape.

The world’s first film shot entirely by chimpanzees is to be broadcast by the BBC as part of a natural history documentary.

The apes created the movie using a specially designed chimp-proof camera given to them by primatologists.

The film-making exercise is part of a scientific study into how chimpanzees perceive the world and each other.

It will be screened within the Natural World programme “Chimpcam” shown on BBC Two at 2000GMT on Wednesday 27 January.

Making the movie was the brainchild of primatologist Ms Betsy Herrelko, who is studying for a PhD in primate behaviour at the University of Stirling, UK.

Ratings-challenged MSNBC is reportedly in negotiations to give the chimps their own nightly primetime show, although industry experts say the primates may be too intelligent to fit in with the rest of the network’s programming.

Here’s Ed Schultz pretending to be emotionally overwhelmed. Hilarious. Yet here he is on MSNBC with Alex Witt, revealing the fact that he’s been approached to run for Byron Dorgan’s senate seat.

Witt: We’re going back to Ed right now because you got a pretty important phone call, and what did they ask of you, the Democrat Party?
Schultz: Well, last night when Sen. Dorgan was talking to me, he asked me how old I was. And I went, “Uh-oh!”
Witt: This is not for a birthday card.
Schultz: Yeah, I did get a phone call this morning from Merle Boucher who is the House Democratic Leader and he asked me to consider to run for the United States Senate seat in the state of North Dakota. I asked him very point blank, “Is this an official ask?” He said, “Yes it is.”

Senator Edward (we assume he would begin going by the more formal name) Schultz. Funniest thing we ever heard. Except for when we heard that Al Franken was running for the senate. Anyone heard how that turned out?

By the way, has there ever been a senator with a stranger name than Byron Dorgan? It sounds like someone speaking nonsense Swedish.

OK, we’re done rambling now. We’ll stop.

Associated Press says MSNBC didn’t act like a news network during airline bombing incident. They’re just noticing?

Reality slapped the Associated Press up the side of the head this week. They finally noticed that MSNBC isn’t really much of a news network.

Next thing you know, the Associated Press will notice that Keith Olbermann isn't really a newsman.

Reality slapped the Associated Press up the side of the head this week. They finally noticed that MSNBC isn’t really much of a news network.

AP explains what lead them to this overdue conclusion:

MSNBC spent considerable time Monday reporting on the aftermath of an attempted Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound airliner, but its executives didn’t want to talk about why the story received little attention as it was breaking.

Competitors CNN and Fox News Channel gave much more extensive attention to the story on Christmas night as MSNBC stuck with taped programs on a murder mystery and environmental issues, along with an “undercover” report on the teenage sex trade.

MSNBC has been criticized in the past for failing to respond quickly to breaking news during off-hours, a choice that may complicate its efforts to be seen as a go-to news source. The network is revamping its daytime schedule to be more news-oriented than personality-driven, since the latter approach has proven to be a ratings failure.

On Christmas, an anchor did live cut-ins about once an hour to pass on news of the attempted terrorism, said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman.
Fox mixed live coverage of the story Friday night with a taped year-end retrospective show with Bill O’Reilly. CNN devoted virtually all of its prime-time hours to the incident, its coverage anchored by Ali Velshi.

Neither Gaines nor Phil Griffin, MSNBC’s top executive, would discuss the judgment call on Monday.

MSNBC’s choice was noted by Rachel Sklar, a blogger for the Mediaite Web site: “If you’re going to call yourself a news network, then cover the news,” she wrote.

As a result of this actual reporting, Keith Olbermann is expected to name Associated Press the World’s Worst Wire Service of the Day.

Both of MSNBC’s remaining viewers will think it’s the funniest damn thing they’ve ever seen.

Rachel Maddow’s death spiral, another week of record low ratings

Rachel Maddow can't quite put a finger on where her former viewers went
Rachel Maddow can't quite put a finger on where her former viewers went

Things are not going well for MSNBC. Not for the network in general nor for Rachel Maddow in particular.

While the poor dear used to routinely and handily top 1,000,000 total viewers per night, she’s reached that lofty level only once in the last five weeks.

We’re very sad to report that this is her third week of record low ratings within that same five week period (it probably would have been four out of five, but we won’t hold the disrupted Thanksgiving week against her).

And just to make things even worse, her total viewers for the most recent five night period has reached an all-time low, clinging precariously just above the 4,000,000 level. Here are the grim details:

Date Total Viewers
Mon, Dec 14 755,000
Tues, Dec 15 857,000
Wed, Dec 16 915,000
Thur, Dec 17 -806,000
Fri, Dec 18 745,000
Total 4,078,000

It will be interesting to see what Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA), MSNBC’s new owners, decide to do with the also-ran cable news network.

2009 sees record ratings at Fox News, record teeth gnashing at MSNBC

Fox News will finish 2009 as the number one cable news network thanks to the highest ratings in the network’s history.

glenn-beck That horrible gnashing of teeth you hear is Chris Matthews. The pathetic whimpering is Keith Olbermann. That plaintive wailing is Rachel Maddow. All because Fox News will finish 2009 as the number one cable news network thanks to the highest ratings in the network’s history.

Broadcasting & Cable reports the rosy details:

Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly provided Fox News' one-two punch in 2009
Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly provided Fox News' one-two punch in 2009

FNC topped the competition in all dayparts: morning (1 million Total Viewers, 340,000 viewers in news’ target demographic of 25-54-year-olds); total day (1.2 million viewers, 323,000 in the demo); primetime (2.2 million viewers, 551,000 in the demo). Those numbers mark year-to-year demo gains of 14% in the morning, 16% in total day and 10% in primetime (Mon-Sun), according to Nielsen.

FNC saw double-digit gains for all of its programs. Year-to-year, Glenn Beck is up 96% among total viewers (2.3 million) and 148% in the demo (612,000). Special Report with Bret Baier posted gains of 25% among total viewers (2 million) and 33% in the demo (454,000). The O’Reilly Factor is up 13% among total viewers (3.3 million) and 27% (801,000) in the demo, marking its tenth consecutive year as the No. 1 cable news program.

As Media Bistro points out, two Fox News success stories stand out:

Glenn Beck is up 96% in total viewers (averaging 2.3 million). He’s also up 148% in the A24-54 demo, averaging 612,000 viewers.

Bill O’Reilly, who now makes it 10 years as the top cable news program, was up 13% in Total Viewers with 3.3 million tuning in and 27% in the demo (801,000). In 2009, O’Reilly often outdrew programs on broadcast networks — just this week, “The Factor” had a larger audience than ABC’s “Better Off Ted” (“Ted” drew 3.183 million viewers, while O’Reilly drew 3.299 million at 8pmET.)

Amusingly, CNN and MSNBC are also touting their 2009 ratings. But that discussion is like the captain of the Titanic arguing with the captain of the Lusitania about which ship is sinking faster.

Rachel Maddow sets the wrong kind of ratings record

Oh, how our hearts go out to Rachel Maddow for her recent loss. Loss of audience, that is.

Would Rachel Maddow's last MSNBC viewer please turn the lights out?
Would Rachel Maddow's last MSNBC viewer please turn the lights out?

Oh, how our hearts go out to Rachel Maddow for her recent loss. Loss of audience, that is.

The premiere of her program was marked by grand hoopla, which was a bit of a mystery to us. We couldn’t figure out how a failed lesbian radio host (clarification: she is a failed radio host, but we have no reason to assume she is not a successful lesbian) could achieve success by teaming up with a failed cable TV network.

Despite our misgivings, it all seemed to work for a while. MSNBC rode the anti-Bush bandwagon and Maddow rode the pro-bush bandwagon to a modicum of success in 2008.

But those days are long gone. Maddow’s viewers have abandoned her like she’s a girl baby in China.

In the early days, her program regularly and handily topped one million total viewers per night. But recent ratings tell a much different story.

Take, for example, her ratings for the week of November 30-December 4. It happens to be Maddow’s lowest rated week ever:

Date Total Audience
Fri, Dec 4 643,000
Thur, Dec 3 789,000
Wed, Dec 2 952,000
Tue, Dec 1 924,000
Mon, Nov 30 816,000
Total Viewers 3,924,000

Five days under 1,000,000 total viewers. Three days under 900,000 viewers. Two days under 800,000 viewers. One day under 700,000 viewers.

And the total viewers for the week added up to just 3,924,000 which is Maddow’s fewest total weekly viewers since MSBNC premiered her nightly smarmfest.

Keep up the good work, Rachel. See you back on Air America with a live show real soon.

Fineman: Well, Chris, one of the things…
Matthews: Is that smart?
Fineman: I think it may turn out to be. I’ve been like you, all over cable TV saying, “How come he isn’t out there pounding away at this? He ought to do it like Ronald Reagan and have four points and pound!”
Matthews: Right, right.
Fineman: That’s not Barack Obama.
Matthews: I know.
Fineman: He is…one of his great qualities, whether you like him or not, is patience. And he’s playing a very patient game here.
Matthews: Howard, is he smarter? Howard, is he smarter than us?
Fineman: Of course, he is. Much smarter!

Yes, Chris Matthews undoubtedly has frequent fantasies of Barack Obama pounding. If you know what we mean.

Brown: Well, do you also think MSNBC is biased?

Jarrett: Well, you know what? This is…this is the thing. I don’t want to generalize and say Fox is biased or another station is biased. I think what we want to do is to look at it on a case-by-case basis. And when we see a pattern of distorition, were going to be honest about that pattern of distortion.

Brown: But you only see that at Fox News. That’s all that you’ve spoken out about.

Jarrett: That’s actually not true.
