New York newspaper conducting smear campaign on completely innocent congressman

Democrat Charlie Rangel, the poster boy for corrupt politicians, blames slimy New York newspapers for the perception that he is somehow dishonest.

Here’s how the New York Post, apparently the slimy newspapers to which Rangel refers, reports the story:

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) was asked about his failure to disclose about $700,000 in assets this weekend in Harlem by my pal Azi Paybarah of PolitickerNY — and responded by saying he was a victim of a New York Post smear campaign.

The charming, churlish House Ways and Means chairman, who is the subject of several ethics committee probes, blasted away at the Murdoch-owner tab — even though the disclosure story was reported by POLITICO and other news outlets.

“I think it’s totally unfair for the New York Post to send investigative reporters to my family’s homes and to do that type of thing,” he said during a rally in Harlem over the weekend. “I guess it’s all selling papers.”

Charlie Rangel. Leader of the culture of corruption for the uncultured.

Bush-is-a-war-criminalThere’s a great website called RegretTheError.com that specializes in running corrections and retractions from newspapers around the world.

Some of them are unintentionally hilarious, like this obituary from the People’s Republic of Santa Cruz Sentinel:

The final sentence of an obituary about Bernie Feldman on Page B3 on Thursday should have read: If people would like to honor his memory, they can sign a petition to send George Bush and Dick Cheney to jail, his son said.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, “Bush lied and people died.”

Harry Reid craps out with his hometown newspaper

When was the last time you saw a state’s largest newspaper eviscerate a powerful, influential politician as thoroughly as the Las Vegas Review-Journal gutted Harry Reid on Sunday?

Their relationship has been rocky for years. But Harry made the mistake of telling the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce that he hopes the Review-Journal goes out of business. The paper responded with a scathing editorial:

We were there first: Newest idea in journalism is “the hate beat”

We’re embarrassed to admit that IHateTheMedia.com has been ripped off by Charles Davis, an Associate Professor at the Missouri School of Journalism. Davis thinks newspapers should create a “hate” beat to keep an eye on you angry Nazis who oppose ObamaCare.

Associate Professor Charles Davis will rue the day he screwed with IHateTheMedia.com
Associate Professor Charles Davis will rue the day he screwed with IHateTheMedia.com

We’re embarrassed to admit that IHateTheMedia.com has been ripped off by Charles Davis, an Associate Professor at the Missouri School of Journalism. We’d feel a lot better about it if we’d been ripped off by a full professor, but alas, that was not meant to be. We were ripped off by a mere Associate Professor.

Davis thinks newspapers should create a “hate” beat.

Of course, the “hate” he’s referring to is that displayed by you angry Nazis who oppose ObamaCare:

The shrill incivility framing what passes for discourse on health care reform seems to have long ago crossed over into territory unrecognized by most rational citizens of the republic.

In the age of instant cable punditry, e-mail Astroturf campaigns left and right and made-to-order outrage, it’s easy to sigh, close the old browser and get back to the business of preseason football, but scratch a bit harder at the random news offered as so many one-off stories about unhinged denizens from the “town hall” meetings (has ever an honored democratic practice been so tarnished?), and a clear trend emerges.

Hate, shuffled off stage in the post-racial haze of the election of the nation’s first black president, is back with a vengeance. Hate, if it ever truly threatened to leave the political stage, is most definitely back, larger and nastier than ever.

As a near-absolutist First Amendment advocate, my prescription for hate speech is always more speech: Give the bigot a microphone as big as the hatred, I say, and watch as the marketplace of ideas works its magic.

Perhaps that’s why I worry, as I watch an emboldened mob grow more irresponsible with each passing day, that the mainstream media fails to give hate the coverage it deserves today.

My proposition is simple: Major news organizations need to cover hate the way they once did — as a standalone beat.

We hate that idea. We hate Associate Professor Davis. We hate the fact that he’s tenured. We hate his tie. We hate his pants. We hate his university. We hate its football team. We hate its cheerleaders. We hate its fraternities. We hate its lousy weather.

Back off, Associate Professor Davis. Hate is our turf.

North Korea: Bill Clinton welcome, Al Gore not so welcome

The UK Daily Mail’s story of the “rescue” of the two American reporters was a terrific piece of reporting that swept away all the PR spin. It’s packed with fascinating little nuggets. For example:

For Bill Clinton, it was an easy mission. In a phone call to her husband a month ago, Laura (Ling) said that if Clinton turned up, she and Euna (Lee) would be granted amnesty.

The Clinton insider said: ‘Obama’s people suggested sending Al Gore, but Kim Jong Il only wanted Bill.

They didn’t want Al Gore. Proof that Americans and North Koreans, people from two very different cultures, have a lot in common.

Disgraced media star calls for Media Czar

Dan Rather is out to save the rapidly-depleting stock of journalists, reporters, editors and empty-headed news anchors by asking for a media czar.

"Hello? Mr. President. It's Czar Rather. I have a typo on page 3. Go to DefCon 4."
"Hello? Mr. President. It's Czar Rather. I have a typo on page 3. Go to DefCon 4."

The sky may be falling and the earth may be boiling polar bear cubs at a rapid rate, but Dan Rather, a leading, but by no means only reason journalism is no longer respected, is out to save the rapidly-depleting stock of journalists, reporters, editors and empty-headed news anchors.

Rather, who spoke at the Aspen Institute, called for the Obama administration to create a “commission on public media.” The commission would, among other things, try to find new business models to help save media outlets because, if it’s one thing that the hundreds of years of the free enterprise system has shown us, it’s that people are incapable of creating a business model without the interference from a government commission.

Remember the Commission On 144-Character Micro-Blogging Messages that brought us Twitter?

“A truly free and independent press is the red beating heart of democracy and freedom,” Rather said in an interview. (A free and independent press that is overseen by a government commission?)

The commission might also be able to help forge documents, too, like military letters about presidents whose politics you don’t necessarily agree with.

If the commission is created, we would need another Czar, a Czar of All Media.

Let’s see. Where could we find a liberal, out-of-work journalist who left his career in disgrace and may need another shot at proving his worth before he’s rolled up like newspapers used to be and tossed away in the dustbin of media history?

Hmmm. Who could that be?

Associated Press screws up story of British government ending “i” before “e” rule

The British government has issued new guidelines that put an end to the traditional “i” before “e” spelling rule. They say there are just too many exceptions.

No longer exceptional
No longer exceptional: beige, codeine, conscience, deify, deity, deign,
dreidel, eider, eight, either, feign, feint, feisty,
foreign, forfeit, freight, heifer, heigh-ho, height, heinous, heir, heist,
 neigh, neighbor, neither, peignoir, prescient,
rein, science, seine, seismic, seize, sheik,
society, sovereign, surfeit, veil, vein, weight,
 weir, weird

The British government has issued new guidelines that put an end to the traditional “i” before “e” spelling rule. They say there are just too many exceptions.

Here’s how the Associated Press reported the story (please take special note of the correction AP added at the end of the story):

The “Support For Spelling” document, which is being sent to thousands of primary schools, says the rule “is not worth teaching” because it doesn’t account for words like ‘sufficient,’ ‘veil’ and ‘their.’

Jack Bovill of the Spelling Society, which advocates simplified spelling, said Saturday he agreed with the decision.

But supporters say the ditty has value because it is one of the few language rules that most people remember.

(This version CORRECTS spelling of Bovill, sted Bovell, in graf 4.)

That’s right, the first version of the AP story spelled the spokesman’s name “Bovell,” but the corrected version spelled it “Bovill,” in effect validating the entire story by putting “e” before “i.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

New York Times announces that it no longer has any readers

The New York Times. Pushed on corners in some of the finest neighborhoods.
The New York Times. Pushed on corners in some of the finest neighborhoods.

Not a single reader. Not one. At least not online.

That’s what Derek Gottfrid announced at a conference sponsored by Advertising Age and Creativity. Gottfrid, the Times’ Senior Software Architect and Product Technologist (his business cards have to accordian out like a Playboy centerfold just to accommodate the length of his title), said the Times online has adopted the affectation of calling their online readers “users.”

“When we think traditionally about creation [at The New York Times] it was limited to people within the Times,” he said at the Creativity and Technology conference. “We created for readers … [for whom] it was a passive experience. But as we moved online, we wanted to move people from readers to users.”

It’s interesting to note that drug dealers also refer to their customers as users. And much like the New York Times, the dealers’ products also cloud their customers minds, impair their judgment, and cause irrational behavior.

In other words, good choice of names, New York Times.

“HUNG FU.” Is this the worst headline ever? The best headline ever? Or both?

hung_fu

In a rapidly changing world, there’s always one thing you can count on: Remarkably graphic, if not always tasteful, headlines from the New York Post.

For example, they announced the possibly accidental, possible suicide, possible homicide death of actor David Carridine with the headline “Hung Fu.”

On one hand, we can say it’s incredibly tasteless.

On the other hand, the odds of a guy accidentally hanging himself while performing auto-erotic asphyxiation in a town called Bangkok while making a movie called “Stretch” would be unbelievable if someone made it up.

It’s the tragic-comic trifecta.

And the score at the end of three innings: British Press 2, Robert Gibbs 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLeVuDn4feU

Smarmy, condescending Obama Press Secretary Robert Gibbs may want to reconsider his recent attacks on the British Press. Because these guys kick butt and take names. Especially if the name is Gibbs.

Just take a look at this scathing column by James Delinpole of the Telegraph UK:

Memo to Obama attack dog Robert Gibbs: stop pooping on our lawn

Memo to US Press secetary Robert Gibbs

1. Congratulations. Your presidential regime has managed to secure the most supine, slobbering, spineless, unquestioning media coverage since Enver Hoxha’s Albania. A report last month by the Center for Media and Public Affairs said Obama has received more coverage than his two predecessors combined. On ABC, CBS and NBC news the majority of evaluations – 58 per cent – have been favourable. (Compare GW Bush – 33 per cent; Bill Clinton 44 per cent – in first 50 days of office). More importantly, you have Pravda. Yes, no less than 73 per cent of all evaluative comments in your chief propaganda organ – aka The New York Times – have been favourable to Obama.

2. Sure your congenitally libtard Mainstream Media were probably biased that way anyway, but you have played your part. Your combative style – which led you to dismiss the entire British print media just now in one glib, sneering phrase – has earned you the nickname “The Enforcer.” You have a reputation for coming down hard on any media outlet which doesn’t follow your approved version of reality. “I work the referee a little bit,” as you once put it. (A reference, perhaps, to when you played goalkeeper for your college football team).

3. If you are going to make clever-sounding football references displaying your rich understanding of the British press, try to get your terminology right. We call it the “Champions League.” Not the “Champions League cup.”

4. That’s only the beginning of your problems, matey. Your treatment not just of the British media but of Britain generally smacks of a risible ineptitude. First, you let President Obama send back the Winston Churchill bust. Then, you insult our visiting prime minister with a dismally low-key reception (worthy of a minor African head of state, not your closest and most loyal ally) and shoddy gifts (those DVDs). Then you compound the insult by having one of your monkeys declare, Chicago-politics-style, “”There’s nothing special about Britain. You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.” OK so we know Obama’s not much interested in foreign affairs and has a special loathing for Britain because it roughed up his Kenyan granddad during the Mau Mau insurrection. But don’t you realise, that one of your jobs as his press secretary is to make out like he loves us so much even his underpants have a union flag on them?

5. Insulting the British print media. Big mistake. We know we’re not angels. We know we can go over the top sometimes. But unfortunately that’s a much bigger problem for you than it is for us. You see, while a lot of your mainstream media will hold fire on stories which they think may reflect poorly on your wondrous Obamamessiah – what his half-brother has been up to, say – we have fewer qualms about telling it like it is. So far, you’ve had a pretty easy ride. The Obama Kool Aid has proved almost as popular beverage in Britain as it is in the US. But just you wait till we start showing our teeth.

6. A lot of Americans know this. They appreciate our irreverence. They enjoy our frank criticisms of all the myriad areas where Obama is getting it so badly wrong – everything from his disastrous cap and trade measures, to his brutal treatment of Chrysler dealerships which didn’t support him, to his pork barrelling, to his failure to do anything that looks remotely like rescuing the US economy. That’s why they come to read us online: because they can and there’s nothing you can do to stop them.

7. We had a guy just like you over here once. Guy named Alastair Campbell. Did for our now heavily discredited prime minister Tony Blair what you do for Obama: a little light press bullying; professional turd polishing; that kind of thing. We hated Alastair Campbell, really loathed him. But he got away with bullying us because in those days we didn’t know any better. We were still going through this sort of dumb-cattle phase where we still had some vestigial respect for politicians and trust that they knew what they were doing.

8. But we don’t respect politicians any more. Not our politicians, and not yours either. Imagine how this new strain of irreverence bordering on utter contempt is going to affect our reporting of political affairs. Actually, you’ve no need to imagine. Just read some of our Telegraph blogs.

Our congratulations to Robert Gibbs, the first press secretary capable of pissing off the press of our closest ally.

Jake Tapper is about this far from losing his seat
on Air Force One

Yeah, but it might have been nice if someone talked about this stuff before the election.
Yeah, but it might have been nice if someone talked about this stuff before the election.

ABC News’ Jake Tapper actually confronted the unconfrontable truth of Barack Obama’s Muslim roots Tueday on his ABC blog.

His willingness to deviate from the media’s blind allegiance to Barack Obama is truly startling. If Tapper keeps this up he’s likely to become ABC’s new Siberian correspondent.

The Emergence of President Obama’s Muslim roots

The other day we heard a comment from a White House aide that never would have been uttered during the primaries or gen4ral election campaign.

During a conference call in preparation for President Obama’s trip to Cairo, Egypt, where he will address the Muslim world, deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Denis McDonough said “the President himself experienced Islam on three continents before he was able to – or before he’s been able to visit, really, the heart of the Islamic world – you know, growing up in Indonesia, having a Muslim father – obviously Muslim Americans (are) a key part of Illinois and Chicago.”

Tapper concluded:

In his April 6 address to the Turkish Parliament, President Obama reference how many “Americans have Muslims in their families or have lived in a Muslim majority country. I know, because I am one of them.”

Well, that clears it all up. He’s one of them. Because he certainly hasn’t acted like he’s one of us.

Pardon us while we laugh: Air America tries to reinvent itself. Again.

Former Air America host Rachel Maddow. Or current Air America host Ron Reagan, Jr. We're not sure which.
Former Air America host Rachel Maddow. Or current Air America host Ron Regan, Jr. We're not sure which.

Air America breathlessly announced yet another corporate restructuring this week.

It’s starting its own network sales division, which will pitch all the company’s radio, video and online content directly to ad agencies instead of depending on third party rep Westwood One for ad sales.

“Agencies are sophisticated in their planning and their creative approach in making strategies for their clients, which will hopefully become our clients,” said Air America Media CEO Bennett Zier. “Because Air America is a particular type of company, and a left of center company, there are certain companies that want to advertise with us, and we want to be able to facilitate that and work with them more directly.”

“Air America is turning into a multimedia company,” Zier said. “And we are looking to attract listeners, viewers and readers with the radio and airamerica.com.”

The good news is that Air America’s management has finally discovered capitalism. The bad news is that it probably won’t trickle down to the air talent.

And we use the term “talent” very loosely.

Is Brooke Shields really John Edwards’ love child?

Teri Shields has not yet denied that John Edwards is her baby daddy.
Teri Shields has not yet denied that John Edwards is her baby daddy.

According to actress Brooke Shields, the National Enquirer kidnapped her demented mother from a retirement home in New Jersey.

As keen observers of the National Enquirer, we think it’s pretty obvious that they were simply trying to determine if Brooke Shields is another John Edwards love child.

The irate Shields told People Magazine that her mother was checked out of the home by a Natonal Enquirer reporter in pursuit a “tabloid story.”

“My mother Teri Shields has been diagnosed with dementia. For her safety, she has temporarily been in a senior living facility, a very difficult decision for me,” she says. “Late Thursday afternoon, I was alerted by Old Tappan Police that my mother had been signed out of the facility by two reporters of the National Enquirer…who falsely claimed they were friends of hers.”

According to police, Teri Shields, 75, was found talking to the freelance reporter several hours later at a restaurant next door to her assisted living center.

“I intend to take every lawful action against all who were involved or who authorized this despicable act,” Brooke Shields said in her statement to People.

Yes, we know it sounds highly unlikely that John Edwards could be Brooke Shields’ father, because he was only 12 years old when she was born. But would you put anything past the guy at this point?
